I've only played 'round thirty minutes or so with that patch, but the world map was just fine. The patch itself shouldn't cause any problems, I wouldn't think. Perhaps you downloaded a buggy Japanese ROM? You may wanna try downloading one from a different site...

This is actually a ZSNES issue.

ZSNES can't emulate the FF6 map properly in any version, so there's a hack to fix it in the code. However, the hack is triggered by the ROM's internal name, and it doesn't recognise the name used by the RPGOne translation.

Couple of things you can do:
  • Use Snes9x instead
  • Use an IPS tool to hard-apply the patch to a copy of the Japanese ROM (if you haven't already), then use a general SNES ROM editor to change the internal name back to either the FF3US name or the FF6j name (which if memory serves would be FINAL FANTASY 3 and FINAL FANTASY 6 respectively). ZSNES shows you the internal name briefly at the bottom of the screen when you load a game.

I'm pretty sure this is a SNES9x issue. It's never emulated completely correctly in any version, though the latest ones at least have the world map done well while walking (the airship always makes me fear a crash, though). ZSNES, however, has never had such a problem that I didn't trigger on purpose or by accident, and I have done hacks where I put in a new internal name. I just played RPGOne's translation and sure enough, I'm not getting any errors in the WOR.

So I'd say switch to ZSNES first, then redownload if anymore problems occur (this time, get a pure FF6 ROM, and apply the translation patch to it).

I use an older version (by about two or three years) of SNES9x, and every game I've ever played on it, including FFVI, has ran perfectly. Of course, I use Mac OS, so if it can be swayed by an operating system (and I dunno what else it could be, not knowing the technical specifics of emulators), would that prevent it from glitching up on me? I do know some Windows PCs have trouble running SNES9x, which is why ZSNES tends to be the SNES emulator of choice for many PC users.

It is an issue with ZSNES.

There was previously a hack which, I believe, didn't discriminate on ROM name. As I remember it, it was removed in a WIP build, which broke all versions of FF6. It was then readded only working on specific ROM names.

I definitely remember playing the totally broken WIP build and having this exact issue with the translation on ZSNES. It may now be fixed in the latest builds though.

Good thing I stuck to the old official versions of ZSNES. No need for updates when it already works perfectly. Carry on then, my mistake. I don't use WIP versions, so it didn't occur to me. :\

This occurred between 1.39 and 1.40, so I would revise my suggestion as follows:
  • If you're using ZSNES 1.39 CVS or 1.40, upgrade to 1.41 and see if it's fixed.
  • If you're using ZSNES 1.41, upgrade to the latest WIP from http://zsnes.ipherswipsite.com/ and see if it's fixed.
  • If it's still not fixed, try what I suggested in my previous post.
If it's Snes9x, maybe just try the latest version. Snes9x compatibility has improved greatly over the last couple of years - last I checked, it was the only emulator not to go to pieces when Edgar and Locke are "swooning" in the desert.
