Have to love the bit about avoiding the sleaze of the sex industry. If they are making money off sexual images and/or sex aren't they part of the sex industry?

London to Get Sexual 'Theme Park'

LONDON - Move over, Eros. Developers announced plans Friday to open a multimillion dollar sexual "theme park" near London's Piccadilly Circus, home to the much-photographed statue of the Greek god of love.

Backers say the London Academy of Sex and Relationships, due to open next spring, will not be a sleazy sex museum, but an educational multimedia attraction that will teach visitors to become better lovers and provide valuable information about disease and sexual problems.

Located within the Trocadero entertainment center — just around the corner from Soho, London's red-light district — the $8.3 million project will feature unspecified "high tech and interactive exhibits."

Alex Rayner, a spokesman for the project, said it was "committed to avoiding the sleazy image that the sex industry usually conjures."

"Titillation is not the goal," he said. "It's meant to be educational. It's meant to be informative."

The privately funded project has support from sexual health organizations including the Sexual Dysfunction Association and
AIDS charity The Terrence Higgins Trust.

"It is long overdue that the U.K. faces up to its responsibilities in the sexual arena — we cannot simply avoid mankind's leading preoccupation and the issues that go with it," said the academy's director of exhibits, Dr. Sarah Brewer. "The academy is the perfect vehicle by which to address these important matters in an exciting, amusing and yet educational way."

Several cities around the world — including New York, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Paris — are home to erotic museums. Typically, they exhibit everything from pornography to high-minded paintings exploring local sexual attitudes and culture.

Concisely put, I don't think I want to know.

I think it sounds interesting, personally.

Also, sex and nudity does not automatically equal sleeze. This is what the article is trying to say. They're not going to be about 4-person orgies with dirty talking and S&M. They're going to be about education, about how our bodies and the reproduction system works.

People need to lighten up about nudity and sex, in my opinion. smile.gif

Sounds a lot like the Museum of Sex in NYC, which I have not yet personally been to. There is a place for this sort of thing, IMO, and places like these are a way to try to legitimatize and destigmatize sex and the history of sexual thought in societies that do tend to be a little buttoned-down about the topic. If there are problems with society's handling of these types of places, they won't be because of the subject matter itself but instead with the immaturity of the populace in handling the subject matter - whether it be people who yell "obscenity" or the people who think it's a place to get off.

I thought 5 or more might be too much for some of the young minds on this board. :-P Heck, I was wondering if what I posted was too far. Good to see that it's not.

People need to open themselves back up to sexuality. I find it disturbing that people were less prude in Roman times than they are now. Look how far we've come, yes?

I'm so there! That's outrageous!

Seriously, like Elena said, a 'museum' that reinforces sexual education, responsibility and safety is in no way part of the sex industry; companies who distribute and make money off pornography, sex toys, etcetera purely for entertainment are a better example of that. It's a similar mindset that condemns such places, but they should be treated and visited for what they really are.

I think this could be a good thing. The world needs more sexual 'theme parks' - if the existing ones serve their purpose, that is.

I'm all for a place that promotes sexual education. Generally being more educated about it helps people from seeing sex as obscene or bad.

Perhaps the use of the word 'Theme Park' gives people the wrong idea, though. Usually people think of a theme park as a place that you "have fun". *wink* *wink*.

What I find sad is that this place will most likely be off limits for some of the people who needs it the most, i.e teenagers. That's something that won't likely change for a while though.

I'm all in favour of it, although I doubt that a Museum can teach me anything. If it were a french one, perhaps... Either way, you got to wonder though, how would a visit with your loved one would turn out.

"Look honey, here's that thing I was talking to you about, and you didin't understood what it was...well, now that you know, are you willing to go for it?"

"Oh no, this one looks dull. Why not try this sort of thing instead?"

"But honey, there are five men in this scene, and only one woman... Oh..."

I went to the Sex Museum in NYC! I loved it.

This sounds like great fun. I approve.

Actually, that may be why I find this idea somewhat disturbing. Museum might actually be a better term. "Academy" (what they call themselves, apparently) seems more scholarly and thus more respectable.

I believe 'Theme Park' is just typical alarmist journalism. If it were a theme park I could think of a couple "rides" I would like to go on. *wink *wink *nudge *nudge

Anyway, I'm sure it's like the sex museum in NYC. And if you've been there you know it's far too educational to be something that you'd come home turned on from.

Or maybe you would...hey it's your prerogative and there really isn't anything wrong w/ it either way.
