Yoichi Wada, the current president of Square-Enix, made what many fans would consider an exciting announcement yesterday at Japan's Nintendo DS Conference: Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VI are now in the process of being re-released on the Game Boy Advance. Much like Final Fantasy IV Advance, the games will receive extra content unfamiliar to both their Super Nintendo and PlayStation versions. Both titles are scheduled to be released sometime next year.

On an interesting note, Wada added that the Final Fantasy III remake for Nintendo DS is indeed well into development. The reason for the slower than anticipated progress? The graphics, specifically those of the characters and fields, are now being made up with polygons, giving the game an authentic 3D look.

I'm actually pretty excited about this. More 'n' likely, it'll encourage me to use my GBA somewhere other than long boat and car journeys, having these games, especially FF5, so close to hand. And extra content! I'm sort of hoping for a Soul of Rebirth sort of thing, if I've got my facts straight and that was the FF2 content that added backstory to many of the characters. Unless they mess it up royally, which, given FF1 & 2, I'm thinking will be quite hard to do, this oughta be great.

Yes, because emulating games instead of buying them provides excellent incentive for companies to rerelease old favourites.

I can't imagine content that would make me want to buy these. I don't like FFV, and I already have FF6. The price of a new game doesn't justified improved load times, and I can't think of what content they could add that would make it worthwhile. I guess it is a good sign that more old games are coming out, though. Gives me more hope for SD2 and Earthbound.

Good point there but I also wondered, and you couldn't play them on a snes emulator?

That makes me very happy.

My hearing that Final Fantasy III is actually being worked on, and most likely this time being worked well on (as opposed to butchering the quality inherent in the older versions) and (hopefully) significantly improved and updated but in keeping with its original spirit (again, hopefully) makes me very happy.

Now that I've had the chance to really think about it, there's one very crucial thing I'm counting on Square-Enix to do here - that is, I hope against all hopes they leave FFV's music intact this time 'round, unlike the rotting cesspool that was its soundtrack in FF Anthology. If they can pull that off, everything'll be peachy keen as far as I'm concerned.

By the way, the following are two low-quality, blurry image samples of the FFIII remake as it was seen presented on a large screen at the Nintendo DS Conference (you can find 'em by following the link in the original post, but ya have to scroll down through the comments quite a ways):

Appears to be the inside of a cave, possibly near the beginning.

Most likely in-battle shots showing off the 3D visuals.

And lastly, Akihiko Yoshia - the notable character designer for several RPG's including Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII - has apparently replaced Yoshitaka Amano as the image illustrator for FFIII. The characters will look excellent, I'm sure, even if my unwavering bias in favor of Amano causes me to be just a li'l disappointed. smile.gif

Awww... I loved Amano's stuff! Having Nomura for the newer games wasn't that big of a deal, but if you're REMAKING a game, you should keep the same character designer. Oh well.

Yup I'm excited, although I'll have to wait and see what the "extra features" are before I actually buy IV, V, or VI. But III is a must.

If the gods answered our prayer's for FFIV GBA, then the god's of the god's answered our prayers for FFV and FFVI. Keep posting new on this PLEASE.

I'm happy. I'd love to see the extra features. Let's all guess. I think the Bestairy of DoS may make an apperance.

Edit
True I'm only going to emulate them if I don't get a DS in time, but still

You mean like the Bestiary in the FF Anthology system file?

But seriously, I'm very curious as to what kind of special features they could include. Probably one or two optional hidden dungeons, almost certainly new weapons, possibly but doubtfully new Espers or playable characters, the list goes on.

Maybe since FF DoS did secret bosses from 6, 6 will do secret bosses from 1.
OK, maybe not, but it would be cool to see Kraken, Lich, Kary and Chaos on FF6.
I hope that they don't make it too easy like the FF1 version.

Hmmm, $130 for a DS (give or take), let's say $30 per game plus another say $40 for a 3D III...

Cost of the complete Final Fantasy series on Nintendo: ~$300.
Value of an orgy of Final Fantasy on a portable system, playable anywhere: Priceless.

There are some things money can't buy. For everything else, there's my MoogleCard

As true as that is, buying merely a GBA will not allow one to play ALL of the FF games. The Nintendo DS is capable of playing GBA games as well as DS games. As such, for people that have neither form of portable playing as of yet (like me), buying a DS is the way to go.

As for extra content, I'll be happy if they just have ONE little boss... I'm sure some of you know what I'm about to say...

CZAR-FRICKIN'-DRAGON! Seriously, that'd be awesome. It'd also be awesome if they stuck Sephiroth in there, except that he's really easy. pwned. Ooh, what if there was a sidequest where you follow a black-caped guy, and when Sephiroth is about to summon meteor, the CzarDragon EATS him? I'd buy the game for that reason alone.

I love Sephiroth as much as the next rabid fanboy, but just...no. I'd much rather pluck my eyes out with a can opener. CzarDragon is fine and all, I'd much rather see that than freakin' Tiamat, Chaos and the crew yet again. What would really make me smile? A bonus dungeon including Ozzie, Slash and Flea. Or maybe a dungeon that lets you bludgeon Squall and Selphie to death with ironing boards and shovels, lord, the fun to be had!

FFVI is flawless as it is, by my standards. It's the game that I compare every other video game to, of the RPG ilk, at least. I'm actually worried about the idea of new additions. Adding new characters would make me very unhappy simply because it means they'd have to be fit into the story somewhere, meaning the story gets a revamp, and I'll be damned if they ruin something so great.

I guess I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed that whatever they do is in good taste towards the game and that they don't "dumb it down" and make it all super childish, ala FF Tactics Advance. "OMGZ KEFKA STOLE MY TEDDY, DOWN WITH THE EMPIRE!"

If they're going to do some kind of massive overhaul, I vote they remove Locke from the game entirely. Just pretend he never happened, yeah. Replace him with a character with actual new traits or at least a character mold that hasn't been done to death. Say amnesia one more time and I'll kill you.

Either way, playing FFVI on the bus ride to work/school/band practice is going to be suh-weet.

I highly doubt there'll be any extra characters added or even changes done to the plot of either game. If there's any chance at all that we'll get to control other characters or fight new secret bosses, it'll probably be within separate modes of sorts.

Some of the big changes we're likely looking at during the story portions of the games are recolored sprites (assuming they introduce more palettes, thus they could do things like give Faris, Butz, Terra, Locke and Gau the correct hair colors in their field sprites, for example), altered speech boxes, maybe some new equipment, upgraded character portraits and in FFVI's case, a tweaking of the translation, at least to fix some of the incorrectly named enemies and items. Just my boring guesses. wink.gif

The best indication as to what'll be added in these ports is FFIV Advance's extras. Whatever its new features are will probably carry over in some form to FFV and VI.

I'd have to agree with Spiffyness on one thing, CzarDragon would be cool. But to pop him in they have to change the game somehow. The Dragon exists, he just has no place to be. I think it'd be cool if they added a new World of Ruin area or dungeon, optional of course, and popped him in. New characters period, not something i'm looking forward to. Because doing so would mean either A: Tampering with the story, or B: Another essentially backstoryless character like Gogo and Umaro. Either way, not so good. We've all seen what Gogo not having a story, or even dialogue does to people. Conspiracy theories ahoy.

I'm looking forward to the enchanced graphics though, immensely. And of note, i'd be pretty psyched up if FFV got some improvements. Whereas I thought FFIV and FFVI were nearly flawless, FFV managed to be flawed, in numerous ways. Something about the quality of the sprites looked blander, rather than an improvement on the graphics of IV. I don't expect much change in either, because it'd affect gameplay i'm certain. I'm just saying, it'd be nice if they had more personality.

Yay ;o

I can't wait to play them, but I haven't beat FFIII yet ;( (I'm stuck x-x)

I've finally completed FFIV and FFVI, so I'm really looking forward to playing the remakes on GBA.

But IMO DoS wasn't all that good, I hope these three aren't as bad.

Obviously you haven't seen this.
However, in all seriousness, i think the new ones are gonna rock. I hope they stick another job in FFV, but that's just me.

I concur with the new job in FFV remark. That would be awesome, and I always felt a little limited in picking the jobs. I think one more would add the necessary diversity, along with maybe a bigger equipment list.

i just hope the changes arent too radical...(besides ff3 being in polygons...although i did wonder why they were going to put it on ds...) i think they couldve put it on gba and it wouldve been just fine...oh well..

i really wish they wont change too much, or water it down like DoS , but i shouldnt get my hopes up. ill probably think the rom of 3 is better...oh well...

yet, i will start saving up money now so i can but all this...300 $ by x-mas? hmm...

(and i am a binourmous fan of ff4, so this is very good news!)

so...bottom line: i just dont want them to water it down. these games are classics in their own rights, and itd be a shame to ruin them.(polygons for ff3 already spoils it for me, but...)

thats my opinion on it anyway...

I'm definitely looking into the GBA remakes, as I already own a GBA. It'll be nice to have another couple of portable FF's besides DoS. As for the FFIII remake, I would've been just fine if it had graphics similar to DoS, rather than taking longer just to make it have 3D graphics. If I ever get a DS, I'll probably get this game if it's available.

It would be nice if they added bosses and other stuff to the remakes, like Czar Dragon, as long as they don't change the game very much.
