A friend of mine who plays Runescape wanted to try another RPG game, but one that isn't for the internet. He asked me and I told him "why not Final Fantasy?" and then he told me "what's Final Fantasy about?" and i was thinking for a while what it really is about..
Isn't Final Fantasy originally about protecting/saving crystals from being broken/possessed? Or about fighting some stupid wars because a power-hungry villain wants to rule the world? Yeah, everyone who played FFVI and later on knows that they didn't have crystals anymore (except FFIX, but I can't spoil it). I think that they should've kept crystals in. Because to me, FFVI, FFVII, FFVIII, FFX, FFX-2, etc. doesn't seem like the "real" Final Fantasy anymore. They've gone too modern and they concentrate mostly on just fighting wars and that stupidity. Even though crystals are cliched, I agree.. But that doesn't mean it should be taken away from the later Final Fantasies like that. Because Final Fantasy got used to the four crystals, and now their plot is degraded. I mean, look at Breath of Fire, they still have Dragons and Ryu and Nina in.. Why shouldn't Final Fantasy continue on with their four elemental crystals tradition too? |

I don't care if the crystals are there, but as always, the plot better not suck.

As long as the plot doesn't pull an FFV, it doesn't matter to me whether there are crystals or not. FFVI did just fine without them, though.

i kinda like the discontinuation (i think thats how u spell???idk). its less repetative (although it became SAVE THE WORLD PLEASE!!!! from then on) of course at first when i saw 'the crystals return on FF IX i had no clue what it was talking about because the first one i played was FF VIII....which i think is then best one yet......so in conlusion....as long as the plot doesnt suck....like FF X and X-2's

But isn't that exactly what it means? If something is considered cliched, it's because it's tired and overused, and that's a sign that, perhaps, change is in order. However, I can't really speak from experience as FFVI was the first FF game I played. All I know is that FFVI was the most successful FF at the time. It's also the first FF to not feature the crystal theme. Coincidence ![]() -------------------- |

Edit wait...thats not true, (of course i havent beaten this one yet....currently im playing V) but FF II (the one with Firion) doesnt have crystals does it? This post has been edited by dont chocobos rule? on 31st October 2005 03:27 -------------------- Aujourdhui a commence avec toi. |

I think it was a good idea to step away from the crystal-centered story.
I mean look what they came up with. |

Change is good. And later plots didn't suck. I think this is an excuse to vent a personal opinion merely disguised as a poll.
EDIT: Quote (Galsic) All I know is that FFVI was the most successful FF at the time. It's also the first FF to not feature the crystal theme. Coincidence ![]() FFVI has The Prelude. As does FFVII, FFIX, FFX, FFT, etc. EDIT II: THE EDIT STRIKES BACK Quote Or about fighting some stupid wars because a power-hungry villain wants to rule the world? You mean like Chaos from FF1? Or maybe the Emperor from FF2. What about Exdeath, come to think of it? This post has been edited by L. Keep the crystals? Not necessary. I-V (and arguably IX and Tactics) save II used the classic theme pretty solidly and managed to create some great plots around it, but I don't think that a return to the classic plots of "find each of the four crystals and prevent disaster from occuring again" would necessarily be an improvement.
What Final Fantasy thrives on nowadays isn't plots, but their classic conventions (ie airships and black and white magic), character designs, and underdogs-taking-on-the-man themes. I thought that each of the post-FF VI numbered FFs (with possible exceptions of VIII and IX; I'm not counting XI because it's an mmorpg) had a rather excellent plot in their own right, and I'm rather interested to see how FF XII's turns out. Just because it seems like Star Wars at first glance doesn't mean it's a bad thing. -------------------- |

If it works, use it. FFVI must have been a fresh twist for FF veterans of old, but a new crystal based thing might be nice. But if it sucks, crystal or not, then I wouldn't bother

I don't remember FF2 (PS1) having any crystals either. Am I wrong? Haven't gotten far in 2nd play through and it's been a while. So it's half and half really. Until 12 comes out then the non-crystals win.
