I've been meaning to get around to attempting the CES challenge, as I've always been curious as to how each of the character scenarios play themselves out in the ending sequence. Other challenges I've succeeded with aren't really challenges per se, but rather battles where I don't take the easy way out. No using a Phoenix Down against the Phantom Train, no caving in and using the Vanish/X-Zone combo on Wrexsoul, stuff like that.

I know someone though who was really close to defeating MagiMaster without Berserking him, a laudible goal to say the least. She just kept wailing away on him with one spell after the next until he took damage, very slowly whittling him down. Unfortunately, she didn't think to cast Life 3 on anyone until after the Master slammed her with Ultima.

And that, my friends, is a sad day for any gamer.

This is kinda off topic, but I've applied this same challenge to FFVII.  Get off Midgar in one sitting, without getting up period.  No bathroom, no snacks in the next room, nothing.  (note: obviously do this only when you haves lots of time on your hands)

I did an FF VII marathon once. Four PS1s in one room, everyone starts a new game at the same time, if you get a Game Over you lose, first person to see the ending credits wins. This was different than what you're talking about, because we were allowed to pause the game and leave the room or have a snack whenever we wanted to, but of course that put you at a disadvantage. The point is, just Midgar with that "challenge" isn't really much at all.

Oh, and for the record, I got second. Two of the guys underleveled and died on disc 1, and was preparing for a Northern Crater trip in Disc III when David Omnislashed the man.

That sounds really fun... Maybe when I'm living with Karl we could invite Sam over and do a weekend of a FF6 marathon, the furthest on at the end of the weeend wins

Eh, let's see...

First I beat was the No Exp challenge (technically a LLG, too.)

I did a few SCCs (Locke, Terra, Celes, Sabin, Gogo, and Strago - only the last one was any interesting. Didn't bother to do the others.)

Initial equipment and natural magic only (easy as heck; most characters' naturally-obtained abilities end up being the most useful anyhow.)

No equipment (stick everyone in the back row and rely on spells and items - not too hard...)

I'm planning on a No Exp Initial Equip Natural Magic game. Doesn't seem too hard since a No Exp game has you dying every turn anyhow, so you need a huge supply of Phoenix Downs. I can only see this being hard near the end. Might be fun, FF6 is pretty easy all things considered. tongue.gif

I've never done one of the challenges, but after playing through a few hours of i90east's expert version, I've found that it itself is a pretty good challenge.
