Is the lifestream/gaia subject touched at all in FFVI (and in earlier FF-games), or did it appear first in FFVII?

Probably 'cause the Lifestream, as such, was only in FFVII...unless you're counting the regurgitated version of it in IX.
The way in which magic holds the planet together in VI (and in turn should destroy it once it disappears - that is if Square cared at all about continuity within that plot point) is kinda like a physical 'life force' in a few ways. Course, everyones' souls end up on the Phantom Train upon death, so it doesn't involve any of that nifty afterlife junk. So if you're talking specifically 'bout the whole 'cycle of souls' concept, then no.
