While I didn't agree with all the opinions that Rehnquist expressed, nor am I too familiar with him, but I just thought that it would be appropriate that I now express my disappointment to see him go. He was, even as he approached his passing away, as he battled thyroid cancer and a fever, very dedicated to his job as Supreme Court Chief Justice, and as Chief Justice, he acted with the intention of doing the right thing for our country. What that right thing may be continues to be a subject of debate, but his presence and work on the Court will continue to be remembered and revered as an integral part of United States history.
Typical honorary words aside, I do have to say, while I don't always agree with what the Supreme Court does, I have a long-held reverence for the Court. The sheer ability for these Justices to command reason and logic even makes opinions most distant from mine marginally persuasive. I have to say that I repsect them for their minds, for their intelligence and wisdom. Rehnquist was no exception to this; his opinions--whether they be majority, concurring, or dissenting, were powerful, respectable writings, backed up by logic and reason. I will also take this opportunity to advise the Senate and the President to choose Justices very carefully and wisely, because the presence of the wrong person on the Court could seriously hurt the prestige and respect it has accumulated and earned over its history. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. I'd like to say one thing about Rehnquist if I could. (Which undoubtably I can
![]() For a judge that people considered rather conservative, he really went middle of the road on most of his decisions. After Reagan nomintaed him he did, unfortunately, do a bit of damage to such decisions as Roe VS Wade, and the Violence against Women act. However all things aside, it bothers me that our current president should get to pick the next justices given that I don't believe he's anywhere near as smart and tactful as Reagan, and will most likely just attempt to put some ultra conservative in who's gonna attack rights of citizens like a bull in rut. -------------------- If you've been mod-o-fied, It's an illusion, and you're in-between. I can't say that I'm politically savvy, but it seems to me that, while the US Constitution was very relevant to the time in which it was produced, the times are a-changin' and the Constitution is struggling to keep up. Up until now, Rehnquist, along with the Justices, did well to make interpretations of the Constitution relevant to our times.

Isn't it Congress's job, in theory at least, to attempt a stop to such a senseless choice from taking place? That's what I'm thinking, buuut as I said before, I'm not politically savvy... -------------------- |

The only judge with a sense of humor in this country.
Sad, really. ![]() -------------------- "There is not a liberal America and a conservative America - there is the United States of America. There is not a black America and a white America and latino America and asian America - there's the United States of America." ~Barack Obama |

I had a Commander Coo-Coo Bananas lunch box growing up. Man, I loved that crazy monkey! I was even a member of the Coo-Coo Club and had a decoder ring that I got out of the Commander Coo-Coo Bananas breakfast cereal. Ah, the good old days, they never last. Moderator Edit I'd be more leniant if that were even funny. ![]() This post has been edited by Rangers51 on 8th September 2005 13:22 -------------------- "That Light has bestowed upon me the greatest black magic!" |

I know I'm not a mod, but please refrain from making this into a political debate thread. I set this up intending to honor a great person, and that should be the point.
The reason I'm saying this is because I'd really hate to see this topic get closed, especially since I think it's quite an important current event in US history and culture, as well as politics. But politics shouldn't be the main point of it. I've already said, for that matter, that whlie I disagree with a number of Rehnquist's opinions, I still respect him.
