Let's compare the two:
Shadow: 1. He slit his mama's throat for money! 2. He constatly runs away during most of the time when he is in your party (except in the WoR). 3. He gives up his life at Kefka Tower to avenge a friend (how sweet?) 4. He doesn't talk unless nessessary. 5. Shows no emotion, so you don't know what kind of mood he is in or anything that is going on with him. 6. Saves Terra, Locke, Relm, Strago, and party from a firey house in Thamasa. 7. He risked his life on the Floating Continent for the world (what a hero)! 8. You learn that his friend, Baram, was killed because Shadow wouldn't help him (by killing him) Magus: 1. You are confused because he's your enemy the first half of the game, and then your ally the other half. 2. He never shows emotion in the game. 3. He sometimes talks when he doesn't need to say anything, but then doesn't talk when he really should. 4. He fights his mother, and kills her with party (I know she was going to destroy the world, but it's your mom for crying out loud.) 5. It seemed like he was behind summoning Lavos (evil), but was actually summoning Lavos to stay asleep, to keep him from destroying the world (for good or for his own benifit?). 6. He acts like he doesn't care for anyone, but maybe he does (remeber and read over #2 again). 7. Disguises himself as a prophet, I believe, to protect his sister (the only one he cared about because she was always there for him), and himself from being killed. This Poll is not to show how good or evil they are, so don't post about that. It's a matter of who doesn't show more of themselves (very secretive) and who does more to help the team, but doesn't always let everyone know he did it. Feel free to let your imagination go wild. Thank you for your participation! Oh, and you can't choose both, just one or none! -------------------- Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Chrsit for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost Acts 4:12 Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost |

Shadow is easily more mysterious than Magus. I personally didn't find Magus that mysterious, given that most of his backstory is given to you throughout the game. Shadow still remains an enigma unless you go through a series of actions that you wouldn't even know to do if you played through the game normally, and even then he keeps his mysterious persona.

I'd say Magus. Even though he has no secrets (or so we know) Well that first bit explains everything.......his only secret it
Possible spoilers: highlight to view that he is Janus. Or whatever the kid is called. Technically, wouldn't Crono be a silent protagonist? It always drove me nuts that he never talked.
Anyways, given the two choices, Magus for the win. At least the mighty sorcerer always had a benevolent goal in mind, and though the path was cloaked in darkness, he never strayed. -------------------- Visions of Peace - Four Generals, One Empire, and the Returners caught in the middle. |

Quote How are Shadow and Magus silent protagonists? I just meant they don't talk very much. Like if it's a sentimental moment, most likely they'll both be like ".......". I totally didn't mean they don't talk. As stated in my first post, I said that Magus Quote sometimes talks when he doesn't need to say anything, but then doesn't talk when he really should. and I imply that for Shadow, but not as much as Magus. Anyway, I'll cast my vote later, and tell ya'll later because I don't have the time right now.

You do know that Magus can also NOT be your ally in the game, I chose him not to be because I found out that throughout that part of the game, he was pretty useless only having about 4 techs, and he can only gain about 10. So I went and killed him... And I really don't think he was a silent protaganist just because he usually talked, but didn't really have much emotion to show at the end step of the game...

I'd say neither is silent, although Shadow is more reticent than Magus, definitely. Magus has a slight flair for drama which Shadow definitely lacks.
And I'd say Shadow is much more mysterious. His past is merely implied to varying degrees of vagueness in his little cutscenes (ahem), but you find out about Magus's pretty easily. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. I voted Shadow, it was only on one of my recent plays through the game that i found out about him and his little friend (that's not his dog).
Also if i hadn't thrown the Atma Weapon at Kefka i would have lost miserably. |

Best silent protagonist: either Crono or the Hero from Dragon Quest V or VIII; Ness gets fourth.
Best mysterious "secret keeper": Either Magus or Auron; Citan from Xenogears gets third. People can't seem to decide what a secret keeper or silent protagonist is, so I made a distinction between the two. Edit Wow, I suck at grammar. Time to go read The Elements of Style again. Well, it's close, but I think that Shadow is more mysterious than Magus.

Which is the better secret keeper or who is the most mysterious?
I would trust Shadow in a life threatening situation or something; Magus can be too shady. Now..maybe Janus I would trust. Simply because he wasn't so bad back then. Actually now that I think about it, he is only being bad for the sake of good when you get down to it...so I guess I don't know? Maybe Shadow...because he has a dog. -------------------- " Video Games are bad for you? That's what they said about Rock 'N' Roll. " -- Shigeru Miyamoto |

Meh, out of those two I'd say Shadow... but Gogo is clearly waaaay more secretive than both of them combined.
I'd rather get to vote for Suikoden's Jeane. xD Five main games and several spin-offs later and we've still seen more of her body than her story! This post has been edited by Mu the Squirrel on 25th October 2006 08:45 -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

I voted Magus, since held secrets from literally everybody through all the various eras you meet him.
Possible spoilers: highlight to view In the middle ages he stands as one of the mystics, convincing them, that he's summonning Lavos to rule the World. In the Future he poses as a prophet, to protect his younger self and his sister. Plus, he had that one good moment when Possible spoilers: highlight to view he told the party how to revive Crono Also, I think his past is revealed more directly than Shaodw's due to him being closer to the core of the plot. -------------------- "I fell off the mountain of words at around the 10,000ft mark. Shadow is the darkest because he never revealed anything to the characters and you can only see a few hints of his past by "Going to an Inn and SLEEPING SO YOU COULD SEE FLASHBACK".

Well, now that you all mention it, there are quite a few people more mysterious and secretive than Shadow and Magus. My reference was only to these two, not anyone else. My vote would go to Shadow, since you actually have to do something
Possible spoilers: highlight to view sleep at an inn on purpose to see his flashbacks to reveal things about him. Magus just seems to spill the beans about himself so easily, and never had to really do nothing extra at all. Please Note: On the 1st of December, if no one post after me, I will be closeing this topic due to unattraction of anymore posters. Magus' character was definitely more interesting to me, but that's only because Shadow was a mostly optional character with a bit of a vague backstory. An enjoyable one, for sure, but not a lot of attention is placed on Shadow in the normal game. He's more mysterious, but I find Magus to be the more interesting character.
