This Nintendo Power stuff were Cecil looks like He-Man, Kain looks like a figure from an Egyptian bass-relief, and Edward anacronistically looks like a refugee from Baten Kaitos... Does anyone know who drew these?

Yeah, I remember these. They actually have a pretty decent one of Cecil on the airship. Pretty obviously an artist's interpretation, since not even the sprites look like this, but interesting anyway. I dub them "official fanart."

The origin was Nintendo Power's review and mini-walkthrough of the SNES cart in '91. Kame was kind enough to send her scans since I was too lazy to get my copy when I went back to my parents' house.
I don't recall them being sourced in the issue, but I would imagine that they were produced by some poorly paid monkey on the NP art direction team. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Wow, that brings back memories. I actually had that issue of Nintendo Power back in the day. I would have to agree it was some NP artist who was commissioned to do them, and did so without much regard for the Amano art.

Or without much regard to the game, period. I mean, are those dreadlocks on Cain's head? Did Gilbert's/Edward's harp morph into a sitar?
I remember looking at a friend's copy way back when, before I ever played or was familiar with the game (I wasn't a subscriber). They're great drawings, but looking at them a second time, jeez - those interpretations sure are, uh, different. -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. Eeeh... different is exactely the right word. I wonder if the one who drew these ever did so much as look at the game for which he was doing the art. Ah well... I remember a comic for Lufia II that came out here and had simliar designs, though there the characters looked a tad more like the game sprites.

I have a theory about the artist responsible for these drawings. The same artist who drew these drew some of the better stuff from Nintendo Power's Secret of Mana Special and the Link to the Past and Link's Awakening strategy books published by the same.
Through some rather thorough elimination of contributing artist's names in several NP issues, I've deterimed that the artist must be Terada Katsuya, who is known to draw comics for Dark Horse and covers for Marvel, but is perhaps best known as the character designer for the anime Blood: The Last Vampire. Compare: http://www.catsuka.com/interf/insolite/terada/terra074.jpg http://www.catsuka.com/interf/insolite/terada/terra037.jpg http://www.catsuka.com/interf/insolite/ter...haracterz04.jpg http://www.catsuka.com/interf/insolite/ter...vdbox_cover.jpg -------------------- "Cavefish is delicious, but only if cooked." |

Looks like artist took a look at the sprites and guessed how they should look. It's a good style, but it's probably better suited to Dragon Warrior.
Cecil's the only one that looks correct. I remember mentioning in an old fanart thread how he doesn't wear pants. It actually looks closest to Cecil. He is the only one who wears heavy armor and his head is open enough for his hair to flow freely like that. Besides, that doesn't look like a spear at all. It's probably a Halberd. -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |

Wait, I got it! Look at how similar those two look! The artist must have messed up and drawn pictures of the characters from the JAPANESE FF2! I'm not joking, either. Those are so incredibly similar, even down to the thing sticking up in front of the head!
But seriously, if I saw THOSE drawings the first time I ever heard of FFVI... I probably never would've played it. Or I'd become gay. It's a lose/lose situation. Hehe, next time I play FFVI, I am SO going to call Cecil He-man... -------------------- The island bathes in the sun's bright rays Distant hills wear a shroud of grey A lonely breeze whispers in the trees Sole witness to history ICO-You were there- |

I dunno. That knight sprite's from FFI in Origins, if I'm not mistaken. Besides, the illustrations don't look a thing like the FFIIj characters to me. The pic of Cecil, I guess, kinda resembles Guy, but with a different outfit and hair...and not as fat, and with a different skin tone and...
Y'know, just forget that whole comment. Can't really see the similarities between the other two and anyone else. If it were the case that the artist drew characters from FFIIj, they'd still look even more off than they do as IV's characters. -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. the person who drew these must have been given information about the character
but no actual guidelines to how they should look when you look at cecil he must have only been told the words "knight" as for kain he probably heard about how he follows the long line of dragoons and fiqured to base him off of the earliest known civilization to have an army, with spears as weaopns. (pretty much egypt because it's the most well-known) and as for edward he probably only heard the words "spoony bard" i find these rather amusing for how horrible they are it actually made me laugh which begs the question; where did you find these images for ffiv This post has been edited by Cloud_Strife510 on 14th July 2005 06:41 -------------------- "Have you ever seen a baby do that before?" |

I looked at the Nintendo Power Nov. 1991 issue (vol. 30 - Nov 1991) and I couldn't find an artists credit directly on the illustrations in question. I did find though...
In the NP staff: Art Director - Yoshi Orimo Concept & Design - Work House USA, Yukio Yamashita, Ichiro Koike, Yoshi Orimo, Nob-Rin Takagi, Leo Tsukamoto, Hiroko Nagami, Wendy Salvatori, Tami Musante, James Pollock, Jeff Hazard. Illustators - Nob-Rin Takagi, Hiroko Nagami, Katusya(sic) Tarada, Jeff Hazard. Poster Art - Bryan L. Ballinger I personally like Cid sitting on the can the best. Those drawings were pretty brutal... Cecil didn't look toooo bad as a drawing of some wierd knight but it didn't look like Cecil. But the job of Kain was by far the worst... I don't even know where to start and I don't think I will just look at the drawings for yourselves.

Nomura designed Tidus with all the art we know and, uh, cough, love, and then Amano drew some sketches based on that. So they're also kind of "official fanart." -------------------- Some ghost of me might greet my son the day he is delivered. Eternal Sleep, Track 1-1: The Blue Planet |

karasuman, it was stated earlier in this thread that Amano did NOT draw those. Besides, even if we didn't know WHO drew them, it looks nothing like Amano's style.
