I especially liked how they showed Midgar in ruins, with vegetation growing on it. Poetic justice that it should be taken over by the very earth the reactors were destroying. I did wonder where Red XIII found a mate, though.

Okay ending

The problem I had was there wasn't any resolution for the characters.

But I suppose thats where Advent Children will come in. At least I'm hoping.

It was pretty good, back in it's day. Today, however, I think it pales a bit.

Is was extremeley short, only showing us what was supposed to happen when the meteor was about to hit the planet... Then all we had was a bright flash, after the credits we could see a "secret scene" which wasn't showing anything but that Nanaki had children. I guess it was inteaded from the begenning that they would have made Advent Children because the end in the game is sooo short. That's why I voted that it could have been better.

Are you kidding me? The ending FMV weight in over 150 megs: the longest FMV in the game by far. It would've been impossible to make the ending any longer. tongue.gif

It could've been better...

But it certainly wasn't a bad ending. The ending itself drew the game to a close, but failed to deliver more than that, and it didn't impress me too much. The post-credit scene, with Red XIII, however, made that ending for me. It was pretty inspiring, but the whole thing paled in comparison to the endings of FF's preceding and following it. Unfulfilling is what it was.

That's not the point. I never said that there should be more FMV. FFVII is actually the only game I've ever seen that has a FMV only ending... There isn't anything to be proud of that. It's still an ending like any other, they're just better graphics. Using 3D graphics with their 70 polygons to extend the ending would have done it for me. It was just... short.

The ending was terribly short, did little to close the charaters stories and missed crucial characters. Compared to other endings totally pitiful.

Keep in mind the ending really begins when Cloud & Sephiroth have that one on one duel, and that scene was pretty cool. Also, I do like the confrontation between Meteor and Holy & the Lifestream. Like Elena, I thought the ending was fitting. Midgar, probably the most ruined part of the planet, is now overgrown with vegetation. It gives you hope, even if the ending left in doubt whether or not humanity had survived (well, until now, anyway--with AC it's obvious that it did). And yeah, cell division, that's how Red XIII had children. I think we discussed this elsewhere. biggrin.gif

I definitely prefer endings where we get a real sense of what happened to the characters.

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
To date, I probably like IV's ending the best. Some people complain that it's over the top in its hapiness, but why shouldn't these people be happy? They just saved the world! Also, that ending goes into what happened to each and every character. There is a sense of finality to it. IX comes in close for the same reason.

VI doesn't really tell you what happened to the characters, outside of the escape from Kefka's tower. You get this feeling that the world will be alright, but you don't know what happens to everyone afterwards. It's a lot like FFVII in that way.

Overall, I like FFVII's ending. It's not brilliant, but it's not terrible either.

I prefer endings where we don't, in fact, get every detail of what happened after and the characters' respective future plans &c. I like ones that imply and let me use my imagination, which FF7's does. Then again, I like more traditional endings, as well. I like all sorts.

I think that on the whole, it was a bit brief for a game that has over 40 hours gameplay. It didn't make me wonder what was going to happen to any of the characters after they saved the world etc.. and I certainly didn't hold any 'attachments' to any of them to care much anyway....

I mean, it shouldn't have been as silly as Suikoden, which shows you what all of the characters got up to after the curtain closes, but there should have been more of a reward for the time spent playing the game.
I just thought - 'ah well, that wasn't as good as VI, I hope VIII will better'.
This was maybe due to the fact I raced through the game in 44 hours and missed a shed-load of stuff which didnt help my opinion of the game at that point.

Well, the first time I saw the ending, I thought it was fantastic. And it does indeed start just before the one on one duel.

I didn't find all the holy and lifestream saving the planet particularly entertaining, I must admit. Certainly not the best FF ending ever but some of it is great.

It's interesting how people make such huge assumptions on the little fmv at the end with Nanaki.

The ending was cryptic, open-ended, and full of emotion, which is why I think it should have been left that way. If the FF7 games didn't spoil that part of the game, I might be a little more willing to accept them.

I wasn't too fond of it. Seemed very short and did little to wrap up things with the characters whose stories you had been developing over 40 hours of gameplay. Want a good open ended ending? CT.

I liked the FFVII ending a lot. Sure, it wasn't like the ones before it, being a lot more cliffhanger-ish, but it gives you JUST enough information to assume what happened. It's not my FAVORITE ending (that goes to FFVI), but it was very well done, in my opinion.

Considering it was an early PS1 game, to have a 150 meg ending (as pointed out), that was freaking amazing. Until Advent Children, I was under the impression that every human was killed and returned to the life stream. Leaving only Nanaki's race alive.

Which made sense, given the 'dark' nature of this FF. Think about it, Aeris gets a sword through the back in one of the FMVs, a lot darker than the screen going red, or the sprite disappearing. The amount of language in the game too, this ending was just perfect. Everyone taking advantage of the earth, and the 'advanced' Midgar ultimately being destroyed by meteor.

that was my thought as well - considering nanaki is of a different race, and one that protects the harmony of the planet, i believed that he was the only one of the party to survive (while thinking, thats unfair, but hey, irl or in video games, life isnt) - and that holy was said to get rid of everything threatening to the planet, the majority of the human race was harming the planet, why would it spare the hundred odd people in cosmo canyon?

When I first saw it, I was kinda confused. I'm actually replaying it again not only 'cause this a badass game, but to see the ending again. Nanaki's race did confuse me 'cause he was the last of his race, but Bugenhagen hinted at a probable mate for him in Cosmo Canyon on disc 3, so that explains that, I guess.
