I was reading the walkthru and it said that magic counter could only be won by racing, i just won it twice betting, i took gp the second time to get exp plus tho... i had to prove to my friend that betting is more lucrative than racing, it was 500 gp.

If you race and you get it, you can still get the 500 GP, you just have to win the chocobo race, win the magic counter, but don't choose the item and choose get GP its all the same.

[EDIT]And when you have a gold choco, it makes winning a snap, so then all you have to worry aobut is being lucky enough to hit a spot with magic counter on it [Cats bell and most other materia give you a ton of GP too]

I'm not sure, but does the Counter (just regular counter) materia found in the Northern Crater work with magic, cause it Counter's with any attached materia?

I also found it requires less total AP to master Counter materia than Magic Counter materia, MUCH less (Magic Counter takes in about 300,000 AP to master!). If the answer to my question above is yes, then Magic Counter is replacable with Counter.

Who is Byblos?

No. Counter only works with Command materia, except I don't think it works for Double Cut, Slash-All, anything starting with W, a non-Coin Throw, or Enemy Skill. If I use it, it's usually Counter-Deathblow, but Counter-Mime, Counter-Coin, and Counter-Morph have their uses, I guess.

As far as I can tell, the master command materia doesn't count for purposes of countering. I tried it on my last playthrough, and it didn't do anything.

i meant more lucrative as in you get the best item more often, after one race in a class the bookies stack the odds in your favor, meaning you wont get jack squat 90% of the time, i mean he didnt even want to believe me after we spent half an hour just getting 20gp at a time on the sub sim. then i started placing bets and got use 1000gp in 5 races... pluse magic counter...
