I haven't played this game for about 5 years, and I recently bought it uber-cheap for the PC. Im at Cosmo Canyon right now, and finding it VERY difficult to steal from enemies. They seem to feel that their material possessions belong to them, not me. Is there any way to increase the rate of success at stealing? Or am I forever trapped in the realm of shoddy theft?

Hi, welcome to CoN smile.gif. To raise your steal rate first open the menu and select [Status] then find out which of your characters has the highest [Dexterity] It will probably be Yuffie if you have her, if not i believe Tifa is the next best bet. Equip them with the [Steal] materia and try again. hope this helps.

i assume that you're stealing from those mecha-guys who give up turbo ethers? those guys are notoriously hard to steal from - and yes, speed sources increase dex - higher dex also fills up your atb bar faster too

Mecha guys? Hmm, actually, trying to steal from anybody. It usually takes a good 20 tries to get anything, unless its a potion.

Stealing is decided by three things.

- The level difference between the person trying to steal and the enemy you're trying to steal from.

- The dexterity of the person trying to steal. (speed)

- The hidden number set for that item to be stolen from that enemy. (Some items will always be harder to steal than others)

Stealing is very useful. You can steal powerful equipment early on then later steal the best armor/accessories in the game

I found 'em. Im at a much higher level now (33 for Cloud), so it only took Yuffie about 5 tries to get the Turbo E off of them. With Cloud it took... well, to be honest, after 7 tries I just killed the guy out of impatience. I hope I don't do the same thing with Diamond Weapon...

On my current playthrough, I WAS UNABLE to steal anything from the monsters in the Junon Area (most) and by the Chocobo Forest (couldn't steal jack), and I quickly and easily had Cloud swipe multiple Grand Gloves from the Madouges in the Mythril Mines. Shouldn't weapons, armor, or accessories be the hardest to obtain from any given enemy or boss?

As far as I can tell, things that you can buy (like most weapons, armor, and accessories) are easier to steal than things that you can't buy (like turbo ethers and elixirs). It seems like the stealing difficulty is determined by some concept of 'rarity' rather than a judge of usefulness.

You can get turbo ethers in a lot of places. Is there some connection to the difficulty of stealing that I'm not seeing? This thread was a month old.
