Note: This is NOT the same as a topic from about a year ago. Just...similar
Alright, like a normal online survey, I will list categories, in which you rank by personal opinion and send it to me via pm. This list is pertaning to the sub-genre of hard rock/heavy metal, as before, but stretches can be made. ie, bands that are many a-time included though some may disagree such as Queen or Heart. Others were arguably before, such as Cream, Steppenwolf, and Iron Butterfly. I'd also accept any given grunge band. (And those of you who own Dan Bukszpan's Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal, anyone from the book is accepted)
Otherwise, use your insentive and instincts about what a hard rock artist is. As for complaints about "gray areas" just put what you think, nothing much I can say. And ballads: Mama I'm Coming Home is a ballad...Fade to Black is a ballad...One isn't. It would be under hard rock song.
I'd like to get this in within three weeks, since at the end of said time I'll be away for a week, but I have no deadline at the moment. When I do, I'll post the results. The survey is over a few sites, btw, and from a few other sources.

Without further ado:

Alright, here it is. Remember, if you didn't vote, you can't complain. Well...you can, you just can't do anything abou it smile.gif
Now without further ado:

Greatest Guitarists
DUM-DUM-DUM-DUM
1. Jimmy Page! From the sadly named English providence of Middlesex. Unquestionably one of the all-time most influential, important, and versatile guitarists and songwriters in rock history. Page inspired just about if not every guitarist from the late 60s on his raunchy riffs served as a blueprint for what would eventually become heavy metal, and for those of you who don’t already know, he was in Led Zeppelin.
2. Kirk Hammet, thrash god of Metallica who was the influence for about every guitarist of the genre. Kirk's guitar playing also shifted focus from his early metal roots to a more earthy (almost bluesy) Jimi Hendrix-esque style.
3. Tony Iommi, none other than the only constant of Black Sabbath, he constructed the signature sound of the what would become heavy metal guitar with his fuzz petal (it wasn’t real big back then in the mid-evil days.) Oh, and he also wrote “Iron Man.” A great part of the resumè.
4. Jimi Hendrix. Yes, he is this far down. Insert your own criticism here.
5. Slash of Guns N Roses, he established himself as one of hard rock's finest and most soulful soloists during the late '80s, with both a signature melodic style mixed with Joe Perry/Keith Richards-esque blues raunch.
6. Dimebag Darrel Abbott. While the majority of acclaimed hard rock guitarists of the early 90s focused primarily on songwriting rather than shredding away, there were a few exceptions to the rule, like Pantera’s own. Without a doubt the leading guitarist of the 1990s (not saying an incredible lot though.) And he was from Dallas, TX. Not real important, I’m just very proud.
7. Eddie Van Halen is probably one of the most awesome guitarists ever born, and the greatest of his genre. Many say he’s second only to Jimi Hendrix. Guess not. He is credited for inventing “guitar virtuoso” and “shred metal” with the hot finger tapping, phazer style.
8. Dace Mustaine, another thrasher, also a one-time Metallica guitarist but received fame in Megadeth. Using techniques even faster than Hammet, he used typical “metal out the end” styling and pumped classic metal riffs. And number 9 just so happens to be Marty Friedman, Dave’s co-lead/rhythm guitar from Rust in Peace through Risk, he is one of the ultimate '80s guitar shredders.
9. Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. Few rock guitarists in the 1990s were as groundbreaking as him, as he has proved time-n-time again through incorporating a myriad of different styles into his own playing.
10. James Hetfield, who is to Hammet what Friedman was to Mustaine. As much as Hammet influenced virtuoso guitarists of the genre, Hetfield influenced a new style of thudding rhythm.
11. Ritchie effing Blackmore, one of the 70s guitar gods, he pretty much invented the idea of power metal and all sorts of guitar heavy metal relating to folklore and Celticism with the band Rainbow (oh yeah, and he was in Deep Purple too. Yunno, the guy who wrote Smoke on the Water.)

Greatest Bassists
1. Cliff Burton, of /\/\etallic/-\. I got so many votes for this guy that I pretty much closed the bass polls for first place. He is that good. If you’re skeptical about “Steve Harris with a wa pedal” just listen to “Pulling Teeth.” Then shuttup.
2. Speak of the devil. Steve Harris slap-bass extraordinaire of Iron Maiden. His style is basically extreme speed meets technical progression, but it’s not that out-there, odd considering he’s the principal songwriter.
3. Terry “Geezer” Butler. What made him so great you ask? One, he was in Black Sabbath. Two, Sabbath had one guitar, hence they needed someone to fill in the blanks when Iommi wasn’t overdubbing himself. And that was Geezer’s throbbing bassline.
4. The most original rock bassist to come along in the 90s was unquestionably Primus’ Les Claypool. Upon discovering such fusion and funk bass greats as Stanley Clarke and Larry Graham around this time, Claypool began incorporating slapping into his playing technique.
5. Michael Balzary is widely regarded as one of rock's most talented bassists. By combining funk-style bass with psychedelic, punk, and hard rock, Balzary created an original playing style in the Red Hot Chilies that has been copied numerous times. Although ppl know him by a different name. Tick or Mite or something like that.
6. Robert Trujillo, mostly known for playing for Suicidal Tendencies and the new recruit of Metallica, played in a funkish sort of way mixing it in with heavy metal speed, using only his fingers, sometimes being reminiscent of Cliff Burton. Also with Jason Newstead, bass for Flotsam & Jetsam, Metallica, Echobrain, Voivod, and Ozzy.
Greatest Drummers
1. John Bonham, the late drummer from Led Zep had the fastest hands in hard rock. A heavy metal Bud Rich as he’s called, he could drum like no one else could and inspired legions of drummers. However, he was tragically killed by alcohol addiction.
2. As the engine that drove the ultimate speed metal machine Slayer, Dave Lombardo is regarded by fans the world over to be the ultimate heavy metal drummer. Certainly, his unmatched combination of technical flair and outright speed has made him the yardstick against which all subsequent metal drummers are fated to be measured.
3. Lars Ulrich, Danish double-bass wiz from Metallica. Lars can stomp out any kind of drum beat using quick hands and equally fast feet, not to mention a love for cymbal crashing.
4. Bill Ward, the fast-handed tommy drummer of Black Sabbath and the Bill Ward Group. Using little to no bass pedal, he put together complex drum riffs and complications, once again helping fill in for Iommi.
5. Neil Peart, without a doubt the most influential drummer in heavy metal and having the record for Biggest Set In Which Everything Single Drum Is Played.
6. Mike Portenoy. Hm, I think I may have to contradict my last statement. Anyway, his incredibly fast progressive style has since the early 90s inspired legions of fans, as measured by the topics I’ve seen in certain forums. And he inspired Felix Mühle, and that’s great.
7. Vinnie Paul Abbot, the Van Halen brother to Dimebag (it’s an old Pantera joke) and is another genius in clicky double-bass techniques.
8. Ian Paice, the jazz drummer of Deep Purple. Listen to “The Mule,” you’ll get it.
Greatest Vocalists
Omg, cover the children’s ears. Number 1 is…James Hetfield. That’s right, Metallica’s melodic shouter-turned-singer (keke) is arguably one of the voices of heavy metal, and certain live performances (S&M) can really show him off…but #1?
2. Robert Plant. It’s okay young ones. Bluesy serenader of Led Zeppelin, there is no questioning him being a voice of metal.
3. Air Raid Siren! I mean Bruce Dickinson, the Iron Maiden banshee shrieker whose trademark vocals scream (no pun) operatic. “There goes the sirens that warns of the air raids” goes quite well.
4. Chris Cornell deep majestic voice of Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, and Audioslave. Cornell uses grunge wails, mid range growls, and powerful shouts to emphasize his vocal power with all his bands.
5. Axl Rose, a wailer with great range, reaching from deep, twaingy to high frequency screams and a fast tongue to boot. Oh come one, the band possesses his name. Figure it out.
6. Ian Gillan. Deep Purple. Jesus Christ Superstar. He has one of the greatest ranges in rock music period. In fact, I can think of a whole one person who has better (and he isn’t on this list.)
7. Ozzy Osbourne, semi-freakish yet bluesy singer of Black Sabbath, Ozzy is surprisingly majestic in his style. He also uses a slight grungy low style, but also capable of hitting it high.
8. Layne Staley/Jerry Cantrell. 90% of voters said these two Alice In Chains grunge wailers were inseparable, which is quite clear even to me how they harmonize nicely.
9. Phil Anselmo, otherwise known as the Philthy Animal. Yeah, he’s a shouter, screamer, yeller whatever, but listen to some early stuff (especially “Cemetery Gates”) to get to picture.
10. Matthew Barlow, uber-operatic singer of Iced Earth. Honestly, you’d think this guy’d be doing Broadway or signing up for Phantom of the Opera rather than singing power metal. But for that decision, we are humbly grateful.
11. Maynard James Keenan and 12 Jonathan Davis of Tool and Korn respectably. They’re together because their vocal styles are quite similar as they are both cold, angst-laden and oddly quite melodic at times. It’s actually quite hard to explain (you guys think you got me) so I’m not (ha!).
13. This is just so perfect I giggle to say it. Number thirteen is Glenn Danzig. Sorry for that. Sometimes described as Jim Morrison or Elvis Presley singing for AC/DC, he sings in a style that goes along great with his black magic music…dark, broody, and sinister.
14. Trent Reznor the screaming sole runner of Nine Inch Nails and Zack de la Rocha, rapping scream master of Rage rap it all up.

More comin' soon...

This is going to take another post. Sorry moderators.

No wonder it's a little biased towards Metallica then. tongue.gif

You people seriously need to check out Watchtower though. The fact that Rick Colaluca doesn't even appear on this list is a complete travesty. People rave on and on about Ulrich but he blows Ulrich away so badly... the only drummer in my mind who could top Rick is Neil Peart.

The drummer from Pantera should have been on the greatest drummer list though.

Daron Malakian should have been on the list for guitarists...and that is about it. That was a real pathetic list when you look at it (Korn getting on the top 20 hard rock bands? Korn!? What the.....?)

[QUOTE]GREATEST BALLADS
2. “Fade to Black,” by Metallica Ride the Lightning (Burton, Ulrich, Hetfield[QUOTE]
k im a huge metallica fan but in my opinion Fade to Black is one of the farthest things from a ballad. the song had more of a tragic sound compared to a ballad....IMO
