i often wonder why setzer gets so little attention when discussing ff6 characters, or final fantasy characters in general. he seems to be somewhat like locke in most peoples eyes, a fairly simple character with little depth to his backstory, and moderate abilities overall. yet, like locke, i would have to say setzer is one of my favorite characters ever. in fact, setzer, along with cid highwind, is my favorite videogame character of all time (i guess i like people who fly). i mean, he had a heart, obviously from his friendship and loss of darryl, he had some pretty damn cool weapons (dice and cards and darts), he had the awesome long white hair, the cool clothes, the "suave" personality, and most importantly he had a goddamn AIRSHIP. what more can you ask for? not much. well i guess not a lot of people will agree on my favorite character, but i think hes a pretty spiffy kinda guy and so should everyone else because i said so.

Alot of people hate Setzer based on the fact Slot is near worthless because it's hard to control and rigged so you can't always access the more powerful attacks like 3-BAR and Bahamut (not to mention the almighty Joker Doom), and GP Rain is just not as powerful as it is in other FF's. Â Same is true for Locke; Steal's pretty good for getting items but if there's nothing you want to steal, he has nothing else that really sets him apart from the others in battle. Â I dislike Setzer based on that myself, I don't ever need the dice weapons and his other exclusive artillery consists of novelties.
Of course, that's why I made the Slot de-rig patch, to improve his worth, much like I did for Gau (Controllable Rage). Â I really ought to try the same thing for Mog.... -------------------- |

I actually don't find Setzer very similar to Locke, which is probably why I don't dislike him like I do the latter. Â While he's not a great character in battle (Slot is too inconsistent, GP rain is too inefficient, and his weapons aren't very powerful), I liked his personality. Â He always struck me as similar to Edgar, actually, only not quite as interested in the opposite sex.
He's got one of the more balanced personalities in the game, although this could be argued as an evidence of lacking character development. I actually found myself growing fond of his wheeling, dealing gambling ways. I also liked the strange eccentricities of his demeanor, and his odd laugh. ("Gwo ho ho!") Overall, he wasn't my favorite character, but I liked him well enough. For the record, the Snow Muffler alone makes Mog a very useful character. -------------------- "I always have a quotation for everything - it saves original thinking." ~Dorothy L. Setzer's my favourite character from FF6, and Setzer was briefly my nickname on my first couple of posts at the old, old CoN forums, long before I was the chief codehorse. Ah, happy memories.
Anyway. I used to find that I could consistently pull out 7-Flush (the one with the three diamonds, that is, not the instant-kill three sevens one; confusing naming, that) pretty consistently, which does a decent amount of damage to all enemies. This was pretty useful when Setzer was first available, I thought, like Edgar's Autocrossbow when you first pick him up. And, fixed dice + offering is one of the first things I try to get hold of in the WoR. Superior damage, even at relatively low levels. |

Damn straight oh how useful Setzer was with the 7-flush. I too can get it consistantly. Practice makes perfect. |

7-Flush isn't hard to get when the game is always in your favor once you get the first diamond. I don't think there's a way to miss the second one, though there's a slight chance on the last one.

Setzer is also one of my favorite characters. They should have developed him some more. I do find Slot pretty useless but I do love Coin Toss. By the end of the game Setzer is one of my most powerful characters since I equip him with the offering and fixed dice which can cause a hell of alot of damage

I tried using Setzers more powerful moves by pausing the battle at the right times. I was usually unsuccessful, but I was able to use H-bomb pretty consistently, but I agree with Zed that it was actually not possible to get the heavy duty stuph by luck or any other means. Aside from that, Setzer was a 'eh' character for me. He was nice and all, but pretty boring and almost invisible, much like Locke, but since he was presented as prominently, he just kinda...was there.

My dear friends,
(Imagin Handel's Masiah alleluia chorus playing in the background)    I have lemented people's opinion of Setzer for years. He is my absolute favorite charecter, ever. Just look at him, Look at him! And the Airship!    But, besides his great fashion sense, there is one definitive thing about him: he has a past, but he's dealt with it. All the charecters in FFVI have a painful past. (With a couple of exceptions: Mog, Umaro. You get the picture.) Locke lost someone, and he's never forgiven himself; throughout the game he learns to deal with it, and move on without forgeting. Shadows past is destroying him, he's a good guy, but he can't escape his past "The Reaper's always one step behind me" (or something like that); he wants to tell someone, he wants to be free of it.    Setzer lost someone, and it did hurt. But in time he has learned to live, and he loves life even more now than before. He doesn't have a big role in the game, because he doesn't need one. All the other charecters need each other. Setzer can survive alone. He doesn't need anyone, Daryl tought him how to live. |

Setzer is a great character, in and out of battle. I wasn't too crazy about his weapons, but they were decent. Slots was useless a lot of the time but had its good moments. His story, however, really shone. I really liked it, and the fact that he overcame it was something, as Iain said.

Setzer is one of my favorite characters as well. Basically it is because I can really connect with his personality. I wish I could fly...

I think Setzer is the coolest character in FF6. The Most useful, however, was GoGo (Daryll) hands down.

Ehemmm..¿does the Fixed Dice-Offering-Genji Glove combo says something? he can be the greatest warrior in the whole game, maybe along with Edgar, but over Terra or Sabin, but this depends on his speed (which can be increased with the Esper Odin)
