ok ok I'm like on the edge of finishing the game [Like I can wander and plow thru north crater and ill be done] But If this turns out to be a plot spoiler, please post it as a plot spoiler and Ill get back to you [1 lifetime] from now when I finish the game.

But the point is what teh heck happens to the white materia and can you get it back? As far as I know, Its sitting on the bottom of the water in the City of the Ancients and my logic says CLOUD USE THE BLOODY UNDERWATER MATERIA AND GO GET IT!

Thanks

There are things that must happen, because otherwise, it would defeat the purpose of its name, for it must happen.

It's at the bottom and you ain't gettin' it back in game time.

I've never finished the game myself, but...

Apparently it plays a role in the ending CG.

consider holy lost to your party - or better yet, ignore it as materia, and take it as what it is, a plot device - you never really had it, so you never lost it

You don't really need it anymore because

as the plot reveals, Aeris was succesful in activating it. You can also tell this because during the FMV it glows a pale green as you were told it would when used.

Okay. So now -I'm- lost.

So, Aeris could only make the materia work if she was dead? Which would make sense- a holy materia can only be accessed by an angel or ethereal person.
But then, why did Sephiroth kill her? Did he know she could do that with the materia? And if he did, why'd he let her die when she's what saved his evilness from working? :/

I prefer to believe that the translators/localizers of the game were pressed for time, and cut out the back story concerning the white materia.
It would have been great to be able to cast the legendary Holy as well as the infamous Meteo.

well, holy and meteo® were plot devices from the start, thusly, no pressed for time, just plain ol plot devices
if they werent plot devices, and you could cast them, well, thats a completely totally different game, now, isnt it? summoning meteor to attack sephy, after HE summoned it to kill the planet - if that had happened, squall of seed woulda had even more of a field day with the game - no offense SoS ;-)

I see what your saying, and although it may have just been a translator's caprice, it seemed like Sephiroth summoned Meteor, whereas Tellah (from 4) and the invisible monster on triangle island (from 6) were the only ones who could cast Meteo. Yes, Gau could too, but only by invoking the invisible monster from triangle island after fighting him again on the Veldt.
I like the idea behind Holy, how it was one of Square's most prideful creations, and how they were so sure of its magicality that they immortalized it by making it the savior and deus ex machina of the 7 world.

I feel like we just went over this in another thread...

Aeris' death was not what was required for Meteo to work. She succesfully cast Holy, then Sephiroth killed her and subsequently(simultaneously) blocked Holy from being from within the lifestream. Which is why it didn't go off til you whooped him.
