Using Paint and pointers from a topic started by Silverlance, i created this sprite. Criticism gladly accepted.

Hmm.. Looks good. The only problem is he looks like he's made out of squares on the inside.
By the way, what's this sprite's name anyway? Just wondering ... |

Yeah, i only used paint so i didn't expect it to look perfectly rounded.
As for a name...i haven't really thought of one, but now you mention it, i might create something in which the character will be involved. |

I pimp this out a lot in sprite threads, but you should get TileStudio.
http://tilestudio.sourceforge.net/ If anything, it will help you create smooth gradients you can use to make the sprite's shading feel less flat and to pick better colors. ![]() ![]() -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

That sprite is really good. It doesn't look like something you created from paint, imo.

What happens when you try to run it? Any error messages? -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

It says : Please select the proram to open with.
I've had this problem before because i don't have Adobe. I think that might be it. As for the bad colour scheme, it's cause theres only like 20 colours on the palette, i'm editing it at the moment. |

That's not an error message. That's just windows asking you what to open a file with.
For instance, if you attempt to open a .zip file without having the .zip extension associated with anything (WinZip usually grabs it when you install it) then Windows won't know what to do with the file and will ask you to select a program with which to open it. What's the exact filename of the file you're trying to open? -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Well, yeah. Or any other program that would open a zip archive (WinZip's what most people use, so get that.)
To identify what type of file a given document is, Windows uses what's after the final period in the file's name as some kind of identifier. This extension tells windows, for instance, "This is a zip file." You're probably familiar with a couple of these. .zip: Zip archive. .exe: Executable file, ie, a program. .bmp: Bitmap image. .jpg: JPG image. .txt: Text document. The way the Windows file system works, it associates an extension with a program and lets the program decide what to do with the file. For instance, you could associate JPG with Internet Explorer and IE will open the image for you. Most programs associate their files' extension with themselves, so you usually don't have to worry about this sort of stuff. But if you download a file and it has an extension Windows doesn't recognize, it won't have any means of knowing what to do with the file and will ask you, "So, dude, uh... what's this? What do you want me to do with this file? I've never seen this before, man!" This is what you're getting. Your Windows has never seen a zip file before, or if it did it, you've uninstalled the program that it used and so Windows doesn't know what to do with the file anymore. In conclusion, you need to get a program Windows can use to open zip files. That would be WinZip. ![]() Moderator Edit Or Windows XP. ![]() This post has been edited by Rangers51 on 11th July 2005 17:11 -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Ok, i've got something, a list of file names like Visual CC+.tsd. Theres loads off them, is this right?
Edit I don't think it is right, because they're all images that are on the tutorial page, or notepad stuff This post has been edited by footbigmike on 11th July 2005 17:11 |

Just open the .exe file. The .tsd are files included for use with the program.
Generally, the .exe is what you're aften when you unzip a program. The other files are just things the program uses or documentation for you to read (such as traditional readme.txt files.) From within the .exe program, you can open the .tsp files (these are samples, you can have a look at them to see how TileStudio handles this stuff.) -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Did you unzip the entire archive, or just the executable?
If you only opened the zip file with WinZip and double-clicked on the .exe file, it won't be able to find the files it needs because they're still compressed in the zip. What you must do, instead, is open the zip file with WinZip and click the "Extract" button at the top of the window. Select a location on your computer and click "ok." Then, you can discard the zip, the file's unpacked on your computer. Go to the place where you unzipped it and open the .exe there. That should get you started. Good luck; looking forward to seeing more sprites from you. ![]() -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

That one looks much better, pretty darn good in fact! Though... you should upload an image instead of a TileStudio file for people who don't have it.

I know, but imageshack doesn't host Tsp files. Any other way?

.tsp is not an image file. It's a file TileStudio uses. Nobody but you, me, and the very limited amount of people on this board who use TileStudio can see that image.
Copy-paste it into paint and save it like you did with your own sprite. That should do the trick. ![]() -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |
