The FF series is clearly an entertaining and succesful one, but any rose has it's thorns. There were some pretty bad moments in FF, whether they were confusing, cheesy, dissapointing or disturbing. So tell me, what, in your opinion, are the worst moments of FF?
I'll get the ball rolling by suggesting the whole wall market scene from FFVII. As amusing as it was to make Cloud cross dress, the strange diolouge, suggestive scenes, and the feeling of "I want to clean myself with a wire brush" you got after staying in the Honey Bee in, made it seem like a bad fanfic come to life. The entirety of Final Fantasy V. The game's existence is a series-wide disappointment in and of itself.

I agree with Ultros: Octopus Royalty on the Wall Market Scene. Especially if Cloud gets chosen by Don Corneo.
That whole scene to me was kind of cheesy and dirsturbing. |

FFX
Yuna: (Half-heartedly) "We're going to Djose. *Fists air* FFX Tidus: "Moonflow baby, here we come!" FFX Tidus & Yuna: "..... HA HA HA HA HA HA HAAH!" FFVII Corneo's Goon: "Come on, baby! Woo-hoo! FFX's pond makeout scene. Seeing two characters whom are very high on my hate list engage in love-making in a minute-long FMV is nauseating at the very least. First time I played through that part, I thought to myself "That water's unclean - there's some Tidus and Yuna spawning in it."
Runner-up goes to, yet again, a scene from FFX - the Unholy Laughing Scene™. I'm sure you all know what I'm talking about. That scene's annoying, cheesy, stupid, and disturbing all rolled into one. James Arnold Taylor should never let his voice force a howling "HA!...HA!...HA!...HA!...HA!" again, lest the people standing around's ears bleed. -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. Quote ( Tidus and Yuna) HA HA HA HA HA HA HA And then there's always FF VIII's "Waltz in Space." You know the game is getting too weird when Possible spoilers: highlight to view The plot got so convoluted, that it's the only FF that I've beaten once and only once. Squall, Zell, Selphie, Quistis, Irvine, and yes, even Seifer , all grew up in the same orphanage, and Edea was their teacher! So, every playable character except Rinoa (and the flashback scene characters) are linked to this orphanage, they just forgot because of GF junction.
Worst plot twist ever. |

FFX's laughing scene gets my vote as well. It was just stupid. That and the Wall Market scene with Cloud and Aeris. The scenes I just wait to get the hell over with when I play those games.

The FFX laugh scene was really stupid it made me want to turn off the game or at least skip through it. It was very annoying and is possibly the worst scene in FF history.

Unlike everyone else, none of the FFX scenes bothered me. *shrug*
The space goalie part of FFVIII annoyed the hell out of me, though. 90% of that game goes on my list. FFIX's scenes with Garnet. All of them. Any scene from FFX-2 that involved the phrases "YRP", "Gullwings", "Dullwings"...actually, most of this game. The Big Whale in FFIV. -------------------- Veni, vidi, dormivi. |

Quote (karasuman @ 26th June 2005 23:07) The Big Whale in FFIV. I second that motion. When I first reached that point in the game I was so excited--the cutscene, something rising up from the water, the Legend... Then, the "Big Whale..?" Are. You. Serious. Throw in FuSoYa and that's the reason why lately I just play up to the Moon part then shrug and put FFIV away for awhile. It's a shame, I love every part of the game put that. Other things that irritate me: FF5: General lack of plot, obviousness of every "plot" turn FF6: Cyan. Sorry. FF7: General aloofness of main character. FF9: Everything about Zidane (especially the tail..), Zorn and Thorn, and the fact that Kuja is apparently a 12 year old girl. Real scary. FFT: l..i..t..t..l..e.. m..o..n..e..y, general aloofness of main character. But MAINLY, my gripe with every game post 6 is the brutal torture that is random encounters. Pre-6, it's: fuzzy screen, couple button presses, done. Ever since it's been: load time, pan slowly across prerendered backdrop, take your time before loading characters, long slow attack animations, more random panning and awkward pauses, slow victory animations, done. It's a dread knowing it'll take a few minutes to finish a battle when a few attacks are all I need. |

Dangit, I liked BOTH the laughing scene and the Big Whale (/Lunar Whale).
As for bad MOMENTS, there is, of course: In FF7, a Great Unpleasantness occurs. This Unpleasantness is most Unpleasant, and has moved more than one gamer, including the author, to tears. A theme song starts; the perpetuator of the Unpleasantness throws something at our hero, and a battle begins. And afterwards? "Beacause, you are... a puppet." JENOVA CAN'T SPELL! JENOVA CAN'T SPELL! Jenova: Yes, I can, you cretins! It was just a typo! Geez. Anyway, kinda ruined the moment for me. -------------------- Some ghost of me might greet my son the day he is delivered. So, every playable character except Rinoa (and the flashback scene characters) are linked to this orphanage, they just forgot because of GF junction. Worst plot twist ever. Yes, yes, and hell yes. A few other things come to mind though. FF5: The lack of character interaction. Nothing happens between the characters, save for Lenna and Faris. It feels kind of... bland and uninteresting. FF7: The terrible translation. When the storyline becomes hard to make sense of because the game's translation sucks, you know you need to find better translators. Plus, the three (last I remember) spawns this game has birthed... FF8 FF9: Necron. Really, that was so random... I more or less know at this point that Possible spoilers: highlight to view but god, haven't you guys ever heard of a little build up, Square? This guy seems to pop out of nowhere. So....
Possible spoilers: highlight to view ....I'm replaying VIII for the fourth time, and I've noticed how stupid the story becomes on disc 3. I liked the world outside of Esthar, where everything was more modern-like, but as soon as I got into that place I was like, "Huh.....so I'm going to be sent to some station in space, eh? .....Yeah." Personally, I love everything before the "Oh my god! We KNEW each other, just so Square can have all the characters make a bonding moments!" (sans the attack on the Garden) is completely freaking stupid. And the story also goes a little too far sometimes. |

There were some pretty stupid things in FFIV. Take the dialogue for example...
King: (Something along the lines of) Are you betraying me? Cecil: No I don't. ^ First of all, thats some f'ed up translation if I've ever seen it. Edward. No question about it. He gives "Lame" a whole new meaning all together... His hit points get too low, and he runs! (cue Ace Ventura voice) La-hoo za-her. In FFV, there was one moment in the town of Tule (I think) where Bartz and Galuf snatch a peek of Faris sleeping. They get all freaked out and Galuf's all like "Just gorgeus... Got me all excited!", so by now, it's pretty obvious Possible spoilers: highlight to view But in the Ship Graveyard, when Faris refuses to take off his/her clothes, Bartz and Galuf find out that they've figured out that Faris is a woman. Not a man. Possible spoilers: highlight to view and they just act like they never saw him/her sleeping and they act like they've never seen his/her chest before.that Faris is definetly a woman, The FFV bards. Sorry, they weren't Spoony enough. XD In FFVI, one lame moment is when Cyan (who just plain sucks all together) is trying to run the Magitek Armor. Sabin ends up saying "Thou art such a pain in the... Confound it all, I'm starting to talk like you!". Another lame moment is when you're in the Opera, and Sabin (if you have him) says "Why is everyone singing??" ...I'm sorry, but those quotes made Sabin just seem like a plain idiot. And probably the ending of FFVI. They just all acted like their troubles were automatically gone, for some reason. Their just like "Oh yay, the enemy's dead, no more angst and gut-wrenching depression for me! My parents are dead? Who cares? So's the enemy! Maybe they can burn in Hell together! Yay!" I dunno... That's just how I see it. This post has been edited by Neon Heart on 25th July 2005 09:36 -------------------- John: So you don't want your screen saver to come on for another four hours? Me: Where does it say that? John: Here where it was 240 minutes. Me: Is that four hours? John: Yeah, 60 X 4. Me: Is that four hours, though? John: ....They'll never take you back in school. xD; |

FFIV : Edward, Zemus, the prayers for the Big Whale.
FFV : Anything to do with the plot of this game. Gameplay was fun (for me), but the plot... ack. FFVI : Cyan and Gau's plot lines. Sabin's character. The lack of serious emotions on the characters' parts regarding the end of the world. FFVII : Don Corneo, Sephiroth, and Cait Sith FFVIII : I refuse to play this game. FFIX : Anything remotely connected to Terra. Queen Brahne. Garnet. That should sum it up. FFX : Oi, where to begin. Although I don't hate EVERYTHING about this game... there's not a lot that I love. -------------------- Oh sure, I don't have to get kicked in the junk to activate it, but I like it anyway. -- Thief commenting on the difference between Throw and Blue Magic. |

If you are counting Final Fantasy Tactics (well, I am), then the general poor translation. It does make for some funny moments,
("Life is Short- Bury!" ?????) But in general is the main disapointment in one of the best games to ever bear the FF name. Apart from that Possible spoilers: highlight to view the orphan thing in FFVIII That was the worst sesame street style plot twist ever. Its like someone got bored. The story wasnt even that bad until then. Good topic this is, it makes you realise how good some of the games are, in that there are so many poor moments yet we still love em! |

FF: Thief
FF II: The stupid growth system FF III: The lack of FF IV: Edge. He can't attack, he can't cast magic, he can't throw your rare weapons for pitiful damage, and his HP is worse than Rydia's. And I like Edward, he can hit with statuses. FF V: Everything. The job system was interesting, but FF III's is better. FF VI: Strago's suckyness. Ditto for Cyan. And then the whole thing of Sabin's Blitzes being magical. Ted Woolsey. AND the general lack of character development. I'd rather have 5 well develpoed ones than 14 generic ones. FF VII: I used to like the Wall Market scene, but a few days ago I was playing it again, and I jut wanted to get the dress and wig and get it over with...so I guess that. The stupid Bizarro battle, and then Scarlet. And Cait Sith. And the crappy translation. FF VIII: Space scenes, including the jet pack get Rinoa part. Esthar for the most part. And Rinoa. FF IX: The 'let's take the worst of all the games and throw it together' is a total shame. And Kuja. And Necron. And Quina. FF T: Bad translation. |

In FFVII, Cait Sith 2 was another bad moment in FF history and one that I forgot until recently. And I agree that bad translation on some of the games is a letdown, albeit a minor one in my opinion.

Quote (yelanates @ 25th July 2005 11:00) AND the general lack of character development. I'd rather have 5 well develpoed ones than 14 generic ones. What game did you play? There's an entire half of the game focusing on character development, and that's not counting what goes on with 'em during the main plot. There's only around four characters that aren't developed well (three of them being optional anyway). But I digress. A few more from me: The entirety of FFX-2, with the exception of Sphere Break. FFVII's uncanny knack at boring me to death...or damn near it. In FFVI, Sabin's incredible stupidity. He jumps in the river after Ultros like some kinda psycho, gets swept away by the current, and then Mog the Narrator claims he "fell", completely disregarding Sabin's lack of brain cells. Who the heck is he trying to kid? And finally, Cid in FFII. Yeah, and he can shove his airship up it, too. -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will.
