No. Seems a little thing like the end of the world can't do him in nor stop him from shaving.

I don't know what pics you're talking 'bout, but Yoshitaka Amano's concept art for Sabin DID depict him with a beard, though I wouldn't think they'd be specific for any part of the game.

Menu pictures lie. He's always had a beard, can't you see on his sprite?

No? Then, maybe not. -shrug-

Though he was depicted with stubble on the FMV. And hey, Relm's shown with a blue hat on the menu picture, but she's got a red hat. And Leo, well, we won't even get into -his- sprite vs. menu picture differences.

Not to mention Gau having green hair in the menu and blond on his sprite. And Locke with the bandana around his head, then having a gyspy-looking profile.

This is probably a stupid question, but how many art designers were there for the game? Was there a separate one for field sprites and menu screen profiles? That's the only reason I can think of to explain the inconsistencies.

Amano's the only credited image designer.

Most of the inconsistencies between the artwork - which the menu pics are based off of - and the field sprites are due to sprite and/or palette issues. There are only so many colors available per palette, so some character sprites (mainly a choice fews' hair) don't match what they're supposed to. There's more to it than just that, but I'm not really one to know.

I heard that they gave Terra green hair because there were already 2 other female characters with blonde hair (which was originally what amano drew her with), and it would have been harder to tell them apart :P (them being relm and celes, of course)

LOL, that would've been funny. No, I'm pretty sure that someone else did the menu pics, not Amano, but I'm not positive...

Well, atleast they tried to make the menu pics and the sprites as similar as possible. But as everyone knows, palette issues forced Amano and the rest of his team to change the appearence of the sprites

I suspect that making sure that sprites/models are easily distinguishable at small sizes is an important issue for the artistic staff of every game, but especially RPGs, which have large casts of characters. Often character designers work very carefully to use different combinations of colors for each one. If anyone here has played the Lunar games on PS1, on one of those 'Making of' disks, character designer Kubooka Toshiyuki talks about how important it is that each character look distinct.

On the other hand we have Amano. The details on his character art changes with each new picture he draws, and he seems to draw females with white/blonde hair 50% of the time. Discrepancies are inevitable.

It makes for unusually interesting fanart, though.

And males. If I'm not mistaken, Cyan is the only dark haired PC in the game, isn't he? So for fanart, I always do give Locke brown hair, and make Terra's hair a dark green so it's much closer to black than blond. I'm a rebel.

But still, it seems ridiculous that they couldn't make Relm's hat blue and stick a few dark pixels on top of Locke's sprite in place of hair to make the bandana pirate-style. That's a mystery to me, but just a personal opinion. Maybe there's some technical reason they couldn't do it, so I'm not going to complain any further.
