I'm playing through the Japanese version right now, and I've always heard that the books in the chest on mount Zozo can teach Cyan to learn tools. Now, does this mean he learns about machinery in general, or can he use the Tools command in battle? If he can, then I can't figure out for the life of me how to do it. Thanks.

Urban myth. It's just the grannies going back and forth on their rocking chairs and the incomprehensible toothless old geezers who rant about it; many a poor fool has been misguided.
No, Cyan will not learn the Tools command. Which is too bad, really, because it would make him slightly less horrid than he is now - slightly - but rather than a gameplay advantage, he develops his 'character': that year in seclusion and meditation have not been ill-spent as he has overcome his fear of machinery. Not really, though, as his LSD-induced psychotic dream he has when the Dream Stooges are trying to eat his soul should be proof enough he still sees them as slithering demonic horrors, powered by the very energy of the Netherrealms. -------------------- |

Why is Cyan so crappy? All you gotta do is cast some high powered spell and a Blitz before charging his Techs and you don't lose any time at all!

Hes one of the slowest characters in the game.. His techs are decent but because they take forever just to charge up, usally doing less than expected. Take a look at cleave for example... it can chop up every baddie on the screen, but ater u have charged it up you find out that it misses half the enemy party.. argh!

You just gave the reason why. That excuse helps Cyan nil. Fact is, most of the time that high powered spell, let alone the following Blitz, will finish the battle unless you deliberately set it up like Flare and Suplex vs. four enemies, when Meteor and Fire Dance could have ended things. That doesn't make Cyan useful, that makes him eye candy and a time-killer, as you're wasting time and resources to give Cyan a point in life aside from Dispatch. It might satisfy whatever craving you have for diversity and give you a nice, warm feeling inside, but Cyan is still one of the worst characters in the game as you had to set up the battle in a strategically foolish way to make him worth something. Most of the time, he might as well be Umaro; you wouldn't see much of a difference in practice. Sure, there might be moments where Quadra Slice is useful, but there are also moments where Umaro is useful, and he still sucks. Quick, for example, may eliminate the downsides of charge time in combat, but it doesn't change the fact that the charge time is there and that you could have already ended the battle in many other ways. Fact is, if you want anything other than Dispatch, Cyan becomes slower than the passage of time in a DBZ battle, all of his potential usefulness drained away because charging up simply takes too long. -------------------- |

Cyan is actually one of the most useful characters in a low-level game. Because it takes so little time to activate and uses no resources, Dispatch is a free damage boost. Most of the time, Cyan and Gau are the primary attackers in a low-level game until you begin piling on high-level spells. Outside of that? Good. But not good enough compared to other characters. Nobody else has to deal with charge time, except Terra in a way as she "wastes" a turn changing. And none of Cyan's attacks can deal any exceptional damage whereas pretty much every other character has what it takes to damage the enemy as much as Cyan in no time at all... A shame, really. It's the overall "stuck waiting while the bar charges" design that fails. If you pick a swrdtech skill and have Cyan sit there while charging, and have access to the rest of your party, he'd be more useful. But the charge time would still make him less good than the others. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |
