ok now you are all probably wondering why i am here asking you something...
well to tell the truth i am going through the final fantasy series 1-10x2. and well i am about to jump into ff4 i am at the final boss of ff2 and as you all hopefully know if you follow the japanese story ff3 has the worng title and they are all thrown into whack... my cousin and i both have the goal to play through them all and get to the very end following the japanese storyline since it was created in japan...
well anyways are there any huge changes in final fantasy four compared to final fantasy 2 that i should know about like battle changes or chocobo handling like i heard there were diffferent collors any comment on that.

please do not kill the story line for me though...

It sounds like you're playing through all of them thinking there's an interlinking storyline, and I hate to burst your bubble, but no FF except X-2 is a direct or indirect continuation of another. As for 'Japanese storyline,' well, the storylines are pretty much the same, be they in native Japan or America or even *gasp* Europe.

It seems like your asking how FFIV matches up to the games preceeding it, especially II, and while I haven't completed IV or II, I'll do my best to answer.

Now, FFIV is a colourful game. You can stuff your 8-bit colours where the sun don't shine, and take your graphical quality with you too. The chocobos handle sublimely, and, though steering these beasts in any one of four possible directions is a hell of a task, it hasn't changed too much. Or, at all.

FFIV is heralded by many, or so it seems, as the game with which Square, and the series, really got into the swing of things. The most notable differences between this and the NES games is the complexity of the plot, and the depth and development of the now much larger cast of characters. The twists and turns are plentiful, I assure you.

The battle system, well, you now have five team members, with an obligatory three front row, two back row combatants. Characters have defined roles, from Paladin to Summoner to Bard, each with commands specific to the character as opposed to a more 'free' system a la II or a class-based system eg FFIIIj. It's still the same idea, but this game introduced ATB, or Active Time Battle, where the ability to attack is made available once a (now unseen) gauge has been filled, much like later FFs.

So, I hope that sums things up, your question was worded kinda cookily. There are plenty of topics concerning the intricacies of the battle system, plot and characters, the posters more than likely more versed in the ways of FFIV, so you couldn't go wrong by checking those out.

Well, in FFIV there are three different colors of chocobos that you can find in chocobo forests: white chocobos (which restore your party's MP), black chocobos (which you can fly around on), and the classic yellow chocobos that act the same as they do in FFII and just about every other FF. There's also the Fat Chocobo (originated in FFIIIj) - basically a really fat yellow chocobo - that'll store extra items taking up your inventory for you.

Well good luck when you start playing, FFIV is one heckuva game. But here's some advice: take it SLOW, it's a very hard game...

You're in for a treat! Like Spiffyness just said though- take your time and level up whenever you enter a new cave/mountain/etc because the baddies get more and more powerful (especially against your mages who generally have low defense).

Personally, this is my favorite Final Fantasy with FF6 coming in as a close second. Enjoy!
