Anyways... IGN photoshopped a mock up of what they think the Classic Shell would look like.

Pretty sweet I must say.

yeah, just saw the controller on engadget a few minutes ago.

why is it a tv remote?!!!

and about the video. almost had me for a second there. but then i realized, isn't the point of a video game that you don't have to move around? i mean, what were they thinking? until now i was actually considering a rev.but no way am i going to be sitting around on my couch pissed because my arm is tired and the "controller" isn't telling the rev what to do because the signal won't get through. ick.

I was waiting for someone to say something like this, because I think it's disgusting how lazy our generation has become.

Sure, I don't usually play games for the sake of moving around, but to be able to move around as a necessity of the game sounds like a much more compelling experience than, say, yelling into a mic over XBox Llive while playing that wannabe FPS game Halo 2. Oh yeah, I went there. And if you're still convinced that moving is a terrible thing to do while playing a video game, please consider Dance Dance Revolution, and how much success it had.

I honestly had been waiting for a home console where I could get up and be involved in the game. It may just be me, but I find sitting around all day on the couch to be a waste of a day. Think back for a second, if you will, and remember Duck Hunt. Do you remember how much fun you had while you were a kid (unless you're a geezer like R51 or Hanyou or something tongue.gif ) wailing that light gun back and forth to make sure that stupid dog didn't laugh at you again? Interactivity at a whole new dimension, that's what the Revolution looks like. I could be wrong, Nintendo could screw it up, and I'm not discounting that at all. But as of right now, I'm sold.

I didn't want to post again so quickly, but I had to mention that the PSP has Franz Ferdinand in its commercials. Just so you know that Nintendo isn't the only company with bad taste in music.

The controller is possibly the most ill- designed, moronic piece of garbage I have ever laid eyes on. My faith in nintendo has plummeted to pretty much zero. And it's not just for this either. They had freaking Good Charlotte in one of their commercials. They are probably one of the worst bands of all time, and shouldn't be allowed to be televised period.

Good Charlotte one of the worst bands of all time? Don't get me wrong, they suck. But... I don't even want to MENTION the other bands I can think of that are even more crappy... *shudders*.

People who have gone hands on with the controller have said it's no more tiring then moving a mouse. So I guess if your really that lazy that's up to you.

Secondly I think the only people who would absolutely loathe controller are those that don't understand it completely. I mean it's new technology that would benefit the way we play games. I was taken back at first too. But upon further reading and inspection I found that Nintendo does indeed have all their bases covered. I wish the ones who do dislike the revolution would at least explain why, instead of just saying "they sux". Then maybe I could try and point out to them how it would work.

Phun, I feel the same way. At first, I was sceptical, but upon reading more and more information and articles about it, and seeing some videos of it in use, I'm a little less so. I am actually looking forward to the release of Revolution, and can't wait to try it out! I have faith in Nintendo; they haven't steered me wrong yet, and I doubt they would start now. biggrin.gif

It seems to me like everyone is forgetting the shell controller that Nintendo announced. It's not like they're saying every single game is going to make sole use of the remote. Though I think the fact that they've taken this step into trying to evolve gaming is awesome.

It's typically Nintendo: It's seemingly all about the games and less about gimmicky add-ons.

This response is a little late but I only just now looked at the topic. I have to say I disagree with the statement about Nintendo being less about the gimmicky add-ons. Can you say, gba connectivity, unnessecary dual screen touch pad? Controller that looks like a remote for your DVD player? I have yet to see anything more gimmicky than that. A DVD player is not a gimmick, it's just something extra that I actually find very useful. I don't need to buy a separate DVD player and have yet another thing to hook up to my TV because I've got on in my xbox.

I admit I overreacted, I mean it's not like I've actually played with it, so what right do I have to dis it anyway? It did completely shock me, and maybe that's what nintendo was going for. So I won't pass any more judgement on the controller until it's sitting in my hands.

As for there being worse bands than good charlotte, you're probably right. I'm just afraid to look down that bottomless pit too hard *also shudders*.

Hm, ya lost me there.

The Revolution doesn't even play DVD's unless you buy a seperate add on. It's a game console.

And if you've ever played Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles you would know that the GBA connectivity had potential and was not a gimmick. I could say the same about Kirby Canvas Curse for the DS and the touch pad. Sure it isn't neccesary, but it can enhance the gameplay. It's not like all developers have to use it either, there is the D-Pad. Plus it's fun.

Also Hideo Kojima plans on supporting the revolution. And it's rumored Metal Gear Solid 4 is going to be the last Metal Gear game he directs.

Haha, you really got me there.

And as for the "video games to relax" comment I really didn't mean to say that video games are meant to be part of an exercise routine, I just dislike it when people are not open minded to the new controller simply because you move to use it.

Yeah, and if IGN's mock-up of the future shell of the alternate controller is even sort of accurate, that will really pull everything together.

The Rev controller is dead sexy, yo.
All my friends thought it was lame, but I don't see this lameness. It's freaking brilliant. It allows SO much more gameplay variations. It will take FPS games to new levels, create new genres, and add new twists to everything. Coupled with the light gun, steering wheel, and Controller Shell attachments, I see absolutely NO reason to doubt the Rev's potential.

I also have a good feeling the graphics will be great, as Resident Evil 5 is confirmed for Rev as well as 360 and PS3.

Nintendo has done it once again. It has created yet another masterpiece. If the population is too blind to see it, then thats their own fault.

Thanks Nintendo. My faith is restored. Not that I ever lost it. happy.gif

Although I will admit that the IGN one is absolutely hideous. Personally, I've always thought that the Gamecube controller is stupid. I just don't like it, don't know why. I'd rather the shell be a more "generic" controller similar to the Xbox 360 or PS3... no just the 360 controller. I don't think anyone here wants another boomerang.

Edit
Same here, Shin, I'm gonna buy a Nintendo console again! I haven't bought one since the SNES...

I know the Revolution doesn't play DVDs and I never said it did. I was just commenting that having an attached DVD player to a console like PS2 and Xbox was not really this big gimmick. You are obviously confused by my post and in turn maybe shoudn't respond.

I have played Crystal Chronicles and found the connectiivty of no real use or added enjoyment for the game.

I'll give you the GBA connectivity, as lacking a GBA kinda dampens that experience, but I don't understand how the DS touchscreen is a gimmick (unless you mean it in the rarely used sense that it's ingenius and useful, but I'm doubting that) or even unnecessary. Most of the DS games I have make full use of it, as in it's 100% necessary, causing the D-pad and buttons to seem more pointless often enough. Those that minimally use the touchscreen display a map on it instead, which has been either a simple convenience or a godsend thus far. What I'd consider a gimmick would be my PS2's DVD playing capabilities (or lack thereof), if you'd even call 'em that. It's almost like the systems pick and choose whom that feature works for. Or an even worse (err, better) example: the Atari 5200 itself - being basically a rehashed 400/800 computer in console form - and its so-called backwards compatibility that required an add-on to play 2600 games, but only on a specific version.

Like I posted a couple days ago in the TGS thread, the Revolution 'remote' can reportedly be held in a way similar to a standard controller (I'm guessing horizontally) when playing without the motion sensors. I'd like to know how Nintendo could've designed it in any other way that wouldn't make switching grips like that uncomfortable. Plus it may be possible to hook other controllers up to the attachment ports. Coupled with the shell controller, those who have a hard time moving their limbs really shouldn't worry too much.

And I suppose, given the fact that the thing can power the console on/off and features buttons for what appears to be menu selections, calling it a 'remote' isn't too far-fetched. Thing is, what we've seen is still a prototype. For all we know Nintendo may make drastic changes and give us a controller stuffed with a boring ol' lack of innovation, and in turn a console of the same. But seeing as I'm counting on this to revive my excitement for video gaming I've been sorely lacking over the past several years, I don't want my hopes shattered to li'l shiny, glassy pieces.

'Sides, going by the impressions of those who've fiddled with it, that controller seems absolutely orgasmic.

The touchscreen (and the fact that is has two screens) seemed like a gimmick to me because they were making this big hoopla about it just like they had about GBA connectivity. I'm just getting a little tired of Nintendo trying to re-invent the wheel. Rather than work on this so-called innovation, I really would like to see some more work on bringing about and revamping abandoned franchises. Such as, the Earthbound/Mother franchise. In regards to your PS2's lack of DVD playing capability I have to say what I've always said. I really don't understand why so many people have problems with their PS2s. I've had my PS2 since the first release and I have never had a problem with it. I've even accidentally dragged the thing to the floor when a controller somehow got wrapped around my leg. But my system's dvd capabilities and game playing capabilities have never faltered. I just don't get it.

But my system's dvd capabilities and game playing capabilities have never faltered. I just don't get it.

The first model of PS2's had faulty scanners put into them that easily wore down with excessive use. The next line took a step up, but the PS2's scanners still wear down pretty fast if you use it to watch DVD's as well. Which is either a really bad mistake, or a scam by Sony to get people to spend more on PS2's. I can't say the same about the slim PS2, but I know plenty of people who've gotten problems with the PS2 from the scanner alone. Some won't read a certain color disc, some won't read newer discs, some just crap out. The list of problems go on. Where as i've never encountered this sort of problem with Nintendo systems.

Nintendo creates these "gimmicks" to help immerse people into the gameplay. Maybe you're not about immersion, maybe you just want to beat the game. But i'm not like that, games are MUCH more enjoyable to me if I can immerse myself in them. The fact of it is, sometimes Nintendo just doesn't execute things well. Just like the GBA Connectivity thing. An excellent idea, but poorly executed. They were going by the idea that most of the people that play have a GBA already. And for those that did, in most cases you would unlock some sort of bonus, that, while being cool. Was completely unnecessary to the real gameplay. I.E: Metroid Prime to Metroid Fusion. Beat Metroid Prime, link up Metroid Fusion, and you can use Samus' Fusion suit in Metroid Prime.

Then there was Zelda: Four Swords Adventure for the Cube, as well as Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. I played both, they were good, and I definitely saw how the GBA came into play. To keep from detracting on the action on the main screen, things went on the GBA screen. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, the GBA displays a map constantly, unless you press start. Then your character on screen begins to hover around whoevers closest and your inventory opens up on the GBA. Allowing the in game action to continue going on for your friends while you change gear. Zelda: Four Swords was like that too, but more in a sort of entering a cave while your friends were on the main screen made your guy show up on the GBA. They were good ideas, they just weren't pulled off in the most effective way. That's why Crystal Chronicles will go so effectively with the Nintendo Dual Screen, it's both screens you need built into one. Which is basically what they were trying to achieve with the GBA Connectivity.

You can tell Nintendo's about the games more than trying to be the main source of entertainment in your house. That's pretty much shown by the lack of DVD playing ability. Which doesn't really bother me. Look more at the fact that load times on the Nintendo Gamecube are extremely short, if not non-existant. Whereas sometimes Xbox and PS2 games can take minutes to load.

It's the innovation and (seemingly) genuine care about the gaming public that makes me stick to Nintendo through thick and thin.

I've played the arcade games before where you swing a sword to play the game. And I enjoyed it like no other, so if Nintendo pulls it off, I'll be more than pleased.

This is probably the most fascinating game-related article I've ever read. Not only does it articulate some pretty clever insights, it also describes Nintendo's thought process and possible future with impressive clarity. I highly suggest a read, whether you're a fan of the Revolution or not - its suggestions as to the nature of the industry as a whole are brilliantly perceptive.

I expect at least half of you to recognize that link, seeing as it recently got wanged by Tycho up at Penny Arcade. If you don't read, or worse don't know, what Penny Arcade is, well, you need to check it out.

Honestly, I think that every idea in this article is dead on. There isn't a single sentence that doesn't hold an amazingly good point or an excellent example or analysis of how Nintendo does business and why the Revolution is the kind of "revolution" it is. It's lengthy, and may bore some people with the plethora of information it bears, but I encourage you to hang in there until the end because I guarantee you that it gets better as it goes.

For those too lazy to read the article, it deals with the next generation of gaming, particularly Nintendo's future, in a quite unbiased fashion. Basically, it explains the cycle of the development of game genres, the two ways a game company can approach and succeed in the cycle of genres, and why the Revolution makes perfect sense in this generation of "awesome consoles" like the PS3 and XBox360. It shows how the essence of Nintendo is its innovation and reinvention of various ideas, and also how in doing so Nintendo isn't the old, lame, kiddy, no-money company that many of you may think it is. At the same time, it shows how Sony and Microsoft are the seemingly dominant companies, but only due to the audiences they service and the style of business they decided to take on.

I really can't explain it all at once, so you should probably read it yourself. I think it's a nice view of the big picture of the next generation of consoles and sheds some light as to why Nintendo needed create something more than just another console.

I also have a good feeling the graphics will be great, as Resident Evil 5 is confirmed for Rev as well as 360 and PS3.

It is? I've never heard of this. Could you provide a link to verify this please?
