Does anyone know the signifigance of keeping Cloud and Barrett's first weapons? Other than the fact that that's what they always have in the posters/art for the game, It seems pretty pointless, and none of the other characters are cursed with their initial equips taking up space.

I can understand it for Barrett because he HAS to have something on his gun-arm.

I guess for Cloud, he pulls out the buster numerous times throughout the game.

Or the sword is a memento of Zack's perhaps?

I always thought it was because they show up in story sequences. Whenever you see Barret gun it up in a story sequence within the game engine, he uses what appears to be his gatling gun. Likewise, Cloud's buster sword shows up whenever he visibly draws his sword in such situations. Some examples:

Barret at the top of the Sector 7 pillar is obviously using the Gatling Gun and not the Assault Gun. Sephiroth forcing Cloud to nearly decapitate Aeris immediately after the Temple of the Ancients has cloud using the Buster Sword.
However, there is simply no reason to keep the Silver Hairpin and Seraph Comb. I have no idea why they decided to keep those.

The Buster Sword is relevant to parts of the plot, so it's needed even though better weapons are easy to come by. I suppose the same could be said about Barret's initial equip, given that it was the first he had grafted on.

Everyone else has base weapons that are just "there". Money-savers, I suppose they'd be called, because they're outranked not far into the game also.

To make the point even more expressly, those two weapons are seen in character models and in FMV. You cannot change those two very easily to include whatever they are carrying currently.

Wow this has got to be the most pointless question ever asked (sorry if that sounds harsh but thinks about it). But anyways it all about money, in the movies always give Cloud his "buster sword" and it will save alot of time and money...that is the name of the game.

I could call your response pointless as well (sorry if that sounds harsh but thinks[sic] about it). If I recall, there is no way to actually remove weapons in FFVII, i.e. you can't fight bare-handed. Hence the reason original weapons stay in your inventory...so you always have a weapon to equip. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Well that doesn't bring us anywhere because you can sell/throw yuffies/cait sith/cid... first weapon but not Cloud's and Barret's.

So your "can't fight bare-handed" theory proves to be wrong..

I also think laszlow is right for this one.

This seems a really trivial point to be honest.

But I think there is one reason for it.
As Laszlow says, they use these intial weapons in many scenes through the game. So not having them in your inventory would look silly as they are constantly used.

Also you can't fight bare handed, because you have to always have a weapon equipped for each character, thus this particularly weapon could not be sold.

I've also heard of a rumor that says if you put a mastered Life materia into Clouds Buster Sword a new abiltiy called "Ressurect" will appear...it's just a rumor, and they probably considered (well actually i'm certain) bringing back Aeris, so there you go, you got my two-cents
