[Castlevania series]
Just how many different versions of the 'Vampire Killer' theme are there among the many games of Konami? I happen to be collecting them and trying to find them; here's what I have so far: (????? means I don't know what to call it) 1. Vampire Killer (MSX): ????? ("Vampire Killer"?) 2. Castlevania (NES): music for stage 1 (NSF track #2) 3. Castlevania 3 (NES): ????? (I haven't played the game) (NSF track #11) 4. Super Castlevania IV (SNES): 'Vampire Killer' (SPC set track #0F) 5a. Castlevania Bloodlines (Sega Master System): 'Vampire Killer' (VGZ set track #10) 5b. Castlevania Bloodlines (Sega Genesis): ????? ("cvania1.gym") 6. Dracula X (SNES): ????? ("Stage 2.spc") 7. Castlevania Chronicles (PS): ????? (CvC OST track 1-04) 8a. Castlevania Chronicles (X68000): ????? (CvC OST track 1-24) 8b. Castlevania Chronicles (Midi Roland CM-64?): ????? (CvC OST track 2-04) 8c. Castlevania Chronicles (Midi Roland SC-55?): ????? (CvC OST track 2-24) 9. Castlevania Resurrection (Sega Saturn/Dreamcast? proposed game): ????? ("another_vamp_killer.mp3") 10. Castlevania: Circle of the Moon: 'Vampire Killer' (GSF set and CotM/CotMS OST track 15) 11. Castlevania: White Night Concerto / Concerto of the Midnight Sun / Harmony of Dissonance: VK2K2 (Vampire Killer 2002) (GSF set track 26, CotM/CotMS OST track 44) (This track also contains a remix of the second track of the Cv3 NSF...can you recognize it?) Other games: +Contra: Hard Corps (Sega Genesis): 'Simon 1994 RD' (a 'hyper' remix of VK) +Konami World: ????? (NSF track 4) (almost identical to the Cv1 version) Additionally, there's track 15 of the GB soundtrack of Castlevania Legends (GB), which starts like VK but goes off on a strange tangent, and there's "L72 - Drac's Coffin (Vampire Killer)" from Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, which contains (at the end of the track) a bit of the melody of VK. Does anyone know of any more? (Also, in particular, does anyone know if there are any VK remixes in the soundtrack of Kid Dracula / Boku Dracula Kun / BokuDora(?) ? I've checked through it once, and didn't find any, but given that the first track of the NSF is somewhat reminiscent of the first track of the Cv3 NSF, I wouldn't rule out the possibility that I might have missed a VK remix.) If you want to hear many of these, just try to find a particular Castlevania fansite, which is quite comprehensive and contains links to a bunch of Castlevania soundtracks. Of course, there's also Zophar.net , supplier of tons of NSF, GYM, VGZ, SPC, GSF, USF, PSF, ... files. And as a sidenote, what's your favorite Vampire Killer remix? My personal favorite is Vampire Killer 2002, which, in my opinion, would be absolutely perfect had they cleaned up the sound quality and inserted a full loop of the original VK before transposing it from D minor to E minor. I'm currently in the process of transcribing it for solo piano (not a mere arrangement, but with a few noticeable changes). Honorable mention goes to the Vampire Killer track from Castlevania 3. The only missing track that I can find from that list is the PC Engine CD version from Dracula X: Rondo of Blood (a supposedly inferior version that I've never played was also released for the SNES as Dracula X, you have the version from that game on your list). I have an emulated port of it, and Stage 2 is indeed Vampire Killer. My favorite ones are the CotM version found in the Observation Tower area and AmIEvil's CastleMania remix of Vampire Killer and Stalker; you can find the latter on ocremix.org.
Edit I realize that CastleMania is not "among the many games of Konami," but I could care less. It rocks. This post has been edited by laszlow on 12th May 2005 19:00 -------------------- |
