Phantasy Star I- I was up to the final battle (first playthrough) when I borrowed it to a friend and, to this day, NEVER saw it again!!
![]() Phantasy Star II- I can't remember if I ever beat it, but the game itself has been used and abused like no other, thus won't save any games. Phantasy Star IV- It was a rental and I had to give it back before I got too far. And these three games I have not been able to find anywhere... As of now, those are the only ones I can recall (probably because I was HUGE in the Phantasy Star games until the Genesis faded into obscurity) any others are just drawing me a blank. FF1 and FFII I am currently playing through for the first time via FFOrigins, but I will finish beat these games sooner or later. -------------------- "Thought I was dead, eh? The Transformers for NES. Far too easy to die from cheap shots and a hail fo bullets when don't have a life bar.
Jak 2. I hated the racing parts, and there were so many, it got way too frustrating. FF9. Can't stay interested in it. -------------------- And behold, I saw a Pale Gaming System, and the name of he who rode it was Squaresoft, and Enix followed him. |

Adventure Island (NES) - I think it's the only NES game from Hudson I never beat.
Kid Icarus (NES) - Don't remember how far I ever got, but I never really got into it to begin with. Bart vs. The Space Mutants (NES) - I always liked to mess around in the levels rather than actually playing the game, like pranking Moe in the first level, etc. Oh, and the controls made jumping and/or dodging enemies lethal itself. Sunset Riders (Arcade/SNES/Genesis) - I came close to beating it once on a rental, but that was years ago. Nowadays the "newer" games have made me go soft with their overall low difficulty that it's sometimes so frustrating to play through the oldies, including this one. I don't remember it being all that challenging, but I started playing it again off and on a few months ago and I can no longer get past the third level. ![]() Any Spyro game - I'd always lose interest somewhere around the middle... Any puzzle game besides Tetris and Adventures of Lolo - Yeah, I've probably played it, but I either got bored or couldn't figure it out... -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. Jak 2. The first one was easy, but the second one... wow. Very tough.
I'm currently on the final boss, and have been for a year and 4 months. (I haven't been trying all that time.) I got no Dark Jak, and I know what to do, but end up getting annihilated. That game is evil. FFIX too. It's just too... boring. Wow. Me & Sharkerbob are reading off the same hymn sheet today! This post has been edited by Mimic on 30th January 2005 13:49 |

Well, I'll only list some of them because I'm working on tons of games. Yeah, working on them . . . Well here goes a short list, in order of the game difficulty as I see it:
1. Ghosts 'n Goblin's, NES. The first level is danged hard but the second level is killer hard, I can't even get past it. There are about six stages if I remember correctly. Game difficulty level, seemingly impossible. 2. Pocky and Rocky, SNES. For some reason, I find this little known game addictivly fun. My problem in this game is that if you lose all of your lives in a later level, any extra hearts you have gained from a boss go away if you choose to continue. Due to that, I don't have the endurance to beat the last few stages. Game difficulty, kinda hard near the end. 3. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Gamecube. This game is easier then easy but I'm just stuck at the point where you play as knuckles in the final stages. The problem is that I keep on drowning about halfway through the level. Game difficulty level, easy when you don't get stuck. 4. Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles: I'm not stuck nor is this game difficult. It is boring however, boring to the point where I can't play it right now. Yes, the game bores me to the point where I can't finish it and I even beat Quest 64. Now that's saying allot about this game. Game difficulty level, not hard enough to be worth any more of my time. -------------------- |

Actually, I beat the vast majority of the rpg's I play, so they stop haunting my brain. Overall though, there are quite a few titles that I still own that apply to this topic...
Golden Sun: The Lost Age - the dungeons in this one made my eyes hurt after awhile, and I'm not sure if I'll ever get to finishing this one. Right now I'm in a game linked from my Golden Sun title, at Magma Rock. Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories - I really really don't like this game, and I sold it (to a friend) about two weeks after getting it. Star Ocean: The Second Story - this game never drew me in like it has for others; I've racked up around twenty hours or so, and I'll probably finish it if for no other reason than to say that I've beated every single PS rpg that I own. Mega Man X5: I am a huge Mega Man fan, but the final boss for this one gave me fits for several weeks. I'll go back to it eventually. Dark Cloud 2: This game is LONG. After playing this one almost exclusively for several months the ending was still not in sight, so right now I'm on hiatus. It's a great game, though, so I'll almost certainly finish this one eventually. Oh, and I am in the process of unlocking special modes in Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe, so I've beaten them but not completed them (still need to beat V-Rated in VJ and Dante Must Die in DMC). Also, I am currently going through Suikoden III and Mega Man X8 for the first time(s), so I guess those count. -------------------- |

I'll edit this post when I look around for some I've really been stuck on for awhile, but as of now, all I can think of is Battletoads. I keep getting to that one board (level 9 or 10, I think), where you ride the bike and some weird glowing thing is chasing you. It's the board after the gear board (Terra Tunnels?). Yea, that has got to be the hardest thing I have ever tried...ever.

I will only list the one that bothers me to this day:
Iron Hammer (Genesis) - I never got good enough to beat it while it was on the Sega Channel, it never saw a cart release, and apparently, no one cared to even try to dump ROMs from the channel as no ROM of the game exists. So I may never be able to finish the game. ![]() -------------------- |

Quote (MogMaster @ 29th January 2005 19:35) Just a quick one for now- I'll add more later Rogue. DOS RPG SM showed us in chat one day. omfg. HATE. SECONDED. Rogue is freaking impossible on so many different levels. The very concept of equality is thrown out the door at stage one, as for every new replay there is a sizable chance that the game has randomly structured itself to be physically unbeatable. Unless you have an apocalyptic arsenal of spells and wands, vorpalized equipment, and the perfect armor to deflect those pesky Aquators by mid-game, you're pretty much finished. And once you actually get to the end, you find out you have to do all the stages over again in reverse order. I have never beaten Rogue despite literally hundreds of tries, and I sincerely doubt whether it is in my mental capacity to do so. -------------------- "I always have a quotation for everything - it saves original thinking." ~Dorothy L. That post just brought up an interesting point. When do you consider a game to be "beaten"? For RPGs and most other games, there is a defined ending, but when is Tetris beaten? I have gotten to level 22, but there are many more levels afterwards...it continues indefinitely. Same goes for, oh, let's say Joust for Atari. I played through it on Normal difficulty all the way to level 100, only to find out that it repeats itself (starts at level 00 and then goes through level 01, 02, 03, etc.). I guess if those don't count as beaten, I would put them in this category, since I have been playing both of those games for YEARS and haven't gotten farther than that.
BTW, my record score in Tetris is 460k, I believe. This is the NES version, mind you, not any of these new versions on the calculator or new versions on the computer (made using Java or something like that), since the scoring is typically different. -------------------- Is PJ |

Didn't have the game long enough:
N64 - Goldeneye 007 Too boring to beat: SNES - FFV PS1 - FFIX N64 - Banjo Kazooie (Mario 64 clone like most 3D adventure games) N64 - F-Zero X GC - F-Zero GX (I don't like the physics and track designs of the 3D F-Zeros) GC - Zelda: Wind Waker (that sailboat seriously needs a motor, BAD... with rocket boost... and wings) PC - X-Com 4 Too many frustrating puzzles: N64 - Zelda: Ocarina of Time (great game otherwise) Too hard: SMS - Alex Kidd (this game is impossible... I tried a million times to beat it) SMS - Alex Kidd 3 SMS - Fantasy Zone SMS - Zillion NES - Contra NES - Marble Madness (I can't get past the stage where everything is tiny) NES - Master Blaster (without the game genie... mad props to anyone who can beat it legitimately) NES - Mega Man (can't beat any bosses) NES - Ninja Gaiden 2 (without the game genie) NES - Snake Rattle n' Roll (I got very very far... but it just becomes too hard... great game though) NES - TMNT (the turtles never lasted long) SNES - Mega Man X PC - Need For Speed Underground (only tried on hard mode with a Honda Civic and Acura RSX) Too long to complete: PS2 - Gran Turismo 3 (why continue playing this when GT4 is coming?) PC - X-Com (made it to the last mission but didn't have that last ounce of patience needed to finish) PC - X-Com 2 (and this one's even longer... and harder) I know there's more but I can think of any. Quote (Ejoty @ 29th January 2005 19:23) NES TMNT This game was not hard, it was just UNBELIEVABLY irritating. The amount of times that you go through a level, killing all the bad guys and then you ALWAYS have to make some impossible jump where there's no room to jump, or you fall back down and have to kill all the guys again, and face that same impossible jump. TMNT 2, on the other hand, was outstandingly fun. Let's see: Simon's Quest: What the f bomb? So you go through the game town by town, there are people who turn into zombies at night that you have to bullwhip, and eventually you cross some huge river on a ferry with the grim reaper and where does it lead you? A brick wall. Just a big brick wall across the screen. Wow, I never even tried to play the game again, as I couldn't believe I actually just witnessed that in a video game. Mario RPG And my mind is completely blocked right now. More later. -------------------- The clouds ran away, opened up the sky And one by one I watched every constellation die And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard Face to face, eye to eye, staring at the last star I should've known, walked all the way home To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone -Atmosphere "Always Coming Back Home to You" |

Heh. My list is really short. I'm not listing games I rented for a day at blockbuster.
So we have... Ikari Warriors 2 - as the first poster said. I couldn't even beat this game by cheating...for some reason A,B,B,A stops working on the last boss. Legacy of the Wizard - Hours upon hours spent getting stuck in the same places....I never even found a boss. SMB2 - This is kind of a hiccup on my gaming career. I guess I just wasn't good at hitting the slots. All NES games. They don't make them like they used to. I've thought of some more. Spy Hunter - Did this game even have an ending? Battletoads in Battlemaniacs: Let's take the hardest game made for the NES and remake it for the SNES, but even harder this time...I think some losers actually managed to beat the first one. I love this thread...it makes me feel so accomplished for beating the games you guys have listed. And realizing exactly how much time I've wasted in front of a TV with a controller in my hand. NES: Captain Planet. That game is SO FRIGGIN HARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Never made is past the 1st level, since one hit kills you and you end up surrounded by enemies coming from all directions
Saturn: Defcon 5 (something like that). Friend got a Saturn and this came with it. It's a FPS where you start at some point in a hallway and a message saying "Go to the command center". We searched for hours without finding the command center, or even an enemy. Finally, after a day or two of obsessing, we found it and pressed a button. Suddenly, it said monsters had breached the hull, but we never found where. At that point, the disk went into a garbage can in several pieces. To reply to Caesar, I consider Tertris beaten if you play a B style game on the highest difficulty and get to see every last one of the Nintendo characters.
... and Tidu-who, it wasn't the jumps in TMNT that did it for me. For some reason I could never make it to the end of the last level, always dying in the same corridor ![]() This is plain euphoria for me to see so many people with similar stories for Adventure Island, Ikari Warriors II, and Spy Hunter. ![]() This post has been edited by Ejoty on 2nd February 2005 06:57 -------------------- Get me off this Disciplinary Committee so I can play any FF except for FF8!!! |

Well, let's see here...I'm going to list games that I couldn't have beaten (or still can't beat) without an emulator.
Mega Man III/IV (GB): I can't remember which one, but I REFUSE to have to go through that scene again. There's a part of the game involving escaping from Wily's base, as lines of the entire area just...disappear. To make this worse, you have to carve out a path by destroying only certain of these missile-like objects (but not too many such that you can't stand on anything anymore. I must have used about 10 minutes on that with over 20 state-saves. Mega Man Xtreme 2 (GBC): The final Sigma boss on Extreme mode is...completely unnecessarily tough. What you have to do is the following: If this huge armor containing Sigma is gold or blue, do a boost up with X and then shoot a charged shot at the dog-head on his chest. If the armor is red, then change to Zero and slash the Z-saber on his higher kneecap. After about 7-10 hits on the armor, Sigma appears temporarily in the middle of the air with no armor. This is the ONLY time you can actually damage Sigma. To add to this, the armor has a number of annoying attacks, such as zooming across the screen in an unavoidable dash, and having little green energy orbs appear out of nowhere and zoom toward you so fast you can't ever dodge all of them. Even using the weakness weapon (Tornado Fang), Sigma only takes 5 damage (he has 32 HP) per hit. And to add to this, the most damage you can do to Sigma every time he appears unarmed IS 5 damage. So basically you have to go through the entire annoying process 6 times in a row. AND he adds new nasty attacks when half or more of his HP is gone. In beating that thing I probably spent more than 30 minutes and over 40 state-saves. Interestingly, Mega Man Xtreme had rather tough maverick bosses, while the final Sigma boss was a complete pushover, but Mega Man Xtreme 2 had easy maverick bosses but an insanely difficult final boss. I recommend you NOT waste your time or money on either of these games, unless you're a true 'completist' MM series fan and want to have your hands on all the MM games that ever appeared. Mega Man 7 (SNES): Again, the final boss is a complete and huge pain in the rear end. Not the 2nd-last, but just the last. Wily again appears in a pod that appears and disappears randomly in certain locations. Well, first, his main weakness is the wild coil, which can only bounce so high...you can't hit him sometimes because of where he is. But it's his attack pattern that makes the battle annoying. From the top, bottom, and two sides of his pod, he fires out four energy orbs of randomly chosen types among three: fire (if it hits you, you stay 'burning' for a while while taking continuous and light damage, up to 6 damage), electricity (hits for around 8 damage), ice (hits for around 4-5 damage but freezes you until you get hit again. When he shoots these things out, the orbs try to target you, and after traveling for a split second, they stop and RE-AIM to try to target you AGAIN. Again, avoiding this attack is close to impossible. Metroid Fusion (GBA): Even WITH savestates, I couldn't outrun the d#$% SA-X after the reactor core incident. Mega Man, Mega Man 3 (NES): Yellow Devil/Rock Monster/P.I.T.A.. Felix the Cat (NES): Just couldn't get past that green sea monster boss without savestates. Ys (NES): Well, somehow I got myself into a place where I can't beat ANY of the monsters with my sword, not to mention the boss. Bust-a-Move (SNES): Somehow I always screw up on some level well before I hit level 100. Super Metroid (SNES): I couldn't quite get past Kraid without a savestate. But past Kraid I'm fine. Tales of Phantasia (SNES): I got to the mountain or whatnot with the harpy enemies or something like that, and I realized that I couldn't just sit around and use only normal attacks. The gameplay here is definitely NOT something I can keep up with, even though I admire the 'fighting game' format to RPG battles. Sailor Moon RPG: Another Story (SNES): So I'm doing the first 'individual' quest (IIRC that's Sailor Mercury's quest). The enemies outside this cave do like 1-4 damage per attack, like most of the enemies I've encountered up to this point. The enemies inside this cave do 40-50 damage per attack. Sailor Mercury has about 80 HP. Go figure. Secret of Mana (SNES): A badly designed game, in my opinion, though not as bad as Sailor Moon RPG, of course. First, I didn't quite understand that I had to randomly waste my magic power on easy enemies in order to 'level up' my magic; this resulted in my getting stuck at Wall Face with only a L.0 Earth Slide. So I decided after a LONG while to go back to the game and try it out again, with my new knowledge. So I got past Wall Face. Instead, I'm now stuck at the Upper Land. The enemies are, again, MUCH tougher than the enemies encountered before...so tough that three pink rabites can basically cream my team without even giving me the chance to run. And in the same place are the fishes with forks, the crabs with fireballs, and the owls that have stop magic. Complete p.i.t.a. situation. In summary: no, I'm not one of those 'HARDKORE' gamers who wants to play with as a$$ive a challenge as possible. I want reasonable challenge, but I will lose interest in the game if it's too difficult. (Heck, I might even personally 'blacklist' it.) -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Lost interest
(PS2) Xenosaga - The massive amounts of cutscenes, me realizing I missed a whole bunch of items and e-mails, getting killed accidentally, and realizing the last time I saved was two hours ago... yeah. Inexplicable forces pulled me away (SNES) Lufia 1 & 2 - I think they are two awesome games, except, like all RPGs, require you to have time on your hand. Large uninterrupted blocks of time. ::sighs:: (PS2) GTA Vice City - Blame Metal Gear Solid 3. Alright, it's not inexplicable but, you know what I mean. Bad thing happened (PSX) Final Fantasy Tactics - Lost my memory card data. I tried to quickly run through again but got annihilated. I felt depressed. ._. (SNES) Final Fantasy V - Leveled up for 3 hours, then accidentally get myself killed. Didn't save for 3 hours, too. Go figure. Way too frustrating/hard (PC) Diablo II - I have bad luck. I'm a hardcore character. I go in with a team of people to clear out a room full of monsters. When they see what they face, half of them immediately exit the game. Suddenly, I'm surrounded by monsters and all of them are targeting ME. Lovely... (PC) Super Cosplay Wars - Some random game on the Internet. I get to the cosplayer dressed like Tallgeese from Gundam Wing. I am clobbered in 15 seconds. I'm sorry if I can't react to alternating low, high, and jumpiing attacks if there about two, three frames of movements between each of the attacks. I gave up after my 8,058,044,651st try. (I wonder if anyone will Google that number). (PC) Majesty - Some little known game that I mentioned in the Obscure Games thread. The last mission requires that you face hordes upon hordes of monsters. The normal stuff is not that bad... it's mainly the hordes of uber-monsters (like dragons, giants, and fun stuff like that who end up killling your heroes in 2-3 hits). I could never get through it without cheating... ![]() (SNES) Super Ghouls and Ghosts - I beat the game once, got the Princess Charm, kept it NO MATTER WHAT. By the way, you need the Princess Charm to beat the final bad guy forever. A little more than halfway through the second time through, I get knocked by some bad guy, lose my coveted golden armor, land directly on a firebomb weapon. Firebombs suck in that game. I swore so loudly that my sister ran in to ask if I hurt myself or not. I did hurt myself... deep inside... ![]() I will say I went insane to go beat Ghost and Gobilns. No cheating, too. FFTA: I was 3 missions from the end and my game got erased.
.Hack//Outbreak (the 3rd game): I was about half way throught the game and I got to a dungeon where everything charmed you, and they had phys immunity. Go figure, all my guys were Frontliners. Alundra 2: This is the game from hell...When you know what to do, it's pretty fun, but the second you need to stop and think about what to do, time just seems to crawl by. Shinobi: Very, very hard game. I swear, the fourth world boss is immpossible to beat... Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne: Those who have played this game know why I can't beat it. It is to PS2 what Rogue is to DOS. -------------------- ~ Aurora, exhale bloody air! Dark Holy! ~ |
