As some may know, a remake of Chrono Trigger in 3-D is in the works by an independent team of programmers and 3-D artists.

Their site.

Well, for a while, I thought "OMG, this independent company is remaking the enitre Chrono Trigger game in 3D!" but then, as I actually read stuff, I found out that it's only a 10-scene demo. It still looks awesome, though.

Cool. I doubt they'd be able to create a full-length remake anyways. It's not easy to have to make all those models, and actually programming a game would be hell.

For something a project of this stature, even if the game consisted of just a plot run-through, I'd buy it. 3D-models usually do a game good.

Magus looks cooler in that picture than he ever did in the game. happy.gif

I couldn't imagine how an independent team could remake the game. They could be stopped from doing even this much by international copyright laws.

Sigh...looks so good. But I actually think Magus looks better in the SNES game, that is to say, the details of Magus I have formed in my head look nothing like that DBZ looking character.

I love the idea, I hate the style. Crono and Magus look so... Built... It might make snese for Magus to be buff, but why on earth would Crono be so strong? It's not like he works out. Most people even describe him as "lazy," So why would he look like Conan the Barbarian?

The end of time looks sweet though thumbup.gif

it's especially interesting that you suggest that magus looks like a "dbz chararacter" considering that the dbz character designer and chrono trigger character designer are identical tongue.gif (akira toriyama). also, if you look at the original artwork for ct, you'll notice that chrono was pretty "buff," as you put it.

i too am puzzled; that an independant team could make an official project out of something so obviously copyrighted simply begs to be stopped. but...the pictures look really good.

Wow. Those pics are incredible. I'm really amazed at the attention to detail, like the way Crono looks when you look at him through the flamey portals at the End of Time. Even if a fraction of this were animated, I'd most certainly look into it.

I'm confused, is this going to be released to retail, even if it is a demo? Or is it just to show the teams aptitude for game creation?

Also, its no more illegal then fan art to do this, at least until they start making money off of it, then they will need Square-enix's permission.

Looks amazing. Too bad it's just a demo. But I'm sure it'll make Chrono Trigger more popular.

But anyways, will they make money off it? If they do, they're gonna be in BIG trouble.

I am all for this project. In fact, I would suggest that they request to do the ENTIRE game in 3D. They should consult Square Enix and ask them, and if they confirm, make the game.

This, to me, would be like the beam of light, shining down from the heavens. At the end of this beam of light would be a brand new game. This brand new game, however, would not be brand new, but only the reawakening of a classic. It would feel like a whole new game nonetheless. The storyline wouldn't have to be changed at all. The scripts would be EXACTLY the same. Nothing would stop me from buying this game. It would just be a whole new gaming experience for me to see Crono, and the rest of the characters in nearly-touchable jaw dropping 3D.

Being able to see some of the cinematics, such as Lavos destroying the 1999 world, or the crashing down of the blackbird, or anything like that would make me jump for joy. This game is one that I miss dearly, and wish I could wipe my mind clear of anything about the game, and re-enjoy it. For me and many others, this is the chance to do that.

Unlike some of the other posters here, I think that both Crono and Magus look suiting to their new 3D form. As was said, Akira Toriyama drew the original characters, so what the hell? Why not make them look DBZ-ish in this game? It only makes sense. Same artist, same look. It just happens this way.

I'll be crossing my fingers for this project, if it hasn't already be scrapped into a pile of poo.

Oh man, I just discovered something else on the site.
The friggin music is beautiful.
To hear some of the songs from the SNES game done in actual music instead of midis, it about makes you wanna pass out.

They have Corridors of Time ( dark ages music )

Undersea Palace ( good music piece )

and a re-do of the boss battle theme. I like all of what they did with these.
If I were square enix, I would have them go for making the whole game.

Ack, the tunes are extraordinary! If there's one thing that spurs my interest in new projects, its the music. Square-Enix should pounce on this opportunity while it's still in its younger stages.

[EDIT] - If you venture into the forums, you can find more pieces of music, here and there.

Don't mention it. I just happened upon it looking for the 600 A.D. theme, but I didn't find it. Hopefully that will be added if they can find the time to remake it. I even taught myself to play it on the guitar, that's how much I like it. cool.gif

We should have known this was gonna happen. Square is a company driven by making money, something as awesome as this had to be stopped because Square isn't creative enough to find a means of making money off of it. mad.gif

I don't believe Squenix could be that evil... I mean... they should be happy that their game is so good that some people want to make it 3D...

Sure, the game designers would, but the game designers don't make the decisions, the people in the suits do. They did come up with the original game and own the rights to it. Game companies are not what they used to be in the late '80's and early '90's. They are big money making machines run by corporate executives and backed by lawyers. The game designers who happen to work for them are caught in the middle, and rarely get any say into matters such as this.

Quote ("Michael "TYP" Cole")
"I really thought this thing had a chance of going legit with Square Enix’s support…"

I'm sorry to say this, but I find it hard to believe that Michael could be that naive. I've been waiting for Square to cancel it for some time now. It's amazing that it took them this long.

It's really too bad though, because that remake looked really great. If I was running Square Enix, I would have put a stop to the release as it was, and then hired them all in an instant, having them continue the work for me. A sad loss... sad.gif

I first heard about this Squenix-stopping-CTR thing on IRC, and wasn't really ever surprised. Like someone has said before, they're a company, and any company is at least partially driven (duh) by a desire to make money. I commented to fellow chatters that I believe Square might have had this same idea--remaking CT in 3D--in mind, which is why they didn't want a fan-project to interfere with it.

But...*gasp!* the irony!!!..."DAMN SHINRA!!!" ~Barret Wallace

Edit
But come to think of it, might they have hired the fans who were working on that project to work on the CT3D development team with them? I haven't ever heard of anything like this, but, you never know!

imo, squenix should have bought out those independent people making the game, or at least hired them to make it. that would have made soooo much money if they released it. squenix is just being stubborn on this one, and i think it's gonna hurt them in the long run.

I don't believe that everyone is getting so mad over Square cancelling it and being "mean." Let's say I owned the copyrights of Chrono Trigger for a second, OK?

Now, this is a classic game that made loads of cash for me. Now let's say CT_Magus up here decided he's going to one-up me and make it better. Do I feel honored that he loved my game so much and wanted to bring it to a new generation? Yeah. Am I going to let him give away something like this for free when I can easily use the hundreds of millions of dollars at my disposal to recreate it for a profit? NO.

Square Enix is not your friendly neighborhood game company. They are a business, like any other business. They are not in it to make us happy, they are not in it to create fun games. They're in it to get paid. The employees sitting in their offices developing these games, they're the ones who care about the games, because they are like us: gamers.

But don't think for a second that any business in this world is going to give a crap about the customer. biggrin.gif

In a way I kind of agree with Rubicant. Even though I love Chrono Trigger (it was my first RPG and my favorite of all time) and would like to see this, I know that Square enix wouldn't allow it. Lets face it: Square is out for money nowadays, and if anyone makes money off of them, then they'll be crushed. They wouldn't allow this because they own the game, and they still wouldn't allow it even if all the fans got together and made a petition. Even if the employees wanted this to happen, in the end its all up to the guys in the suits. Also, I dont think that they're going to remake ANY classics. They're just going to continue giving us the *@# thats called the "modern rpg".

Yeah, i see Rubicant's point also, but i seriously doubt that Square is ever going to make another rendition of Crono Trigger, therefore, why stop people who are just doing it for the love of the game?
$$THE ALLMIGHTY DOLLAR$$
I think its a shame that Square would get so petty over it, but I also agree with Endless Knight that they could have just hired these people to actually make a remake of the game, and give them all the resources available at Square-Enix. Overall, I'm disappointed thumbdown.gif
