Well, if there are any Something Awful readers out there, then you should already know this. However, it has been recently brought to my attention that there is a parody of Final Fantasy 3/6 made by those guys over there.
Many of the jokes you will only get if you are an avid reader, but there are also many that aren't. http://www.somethingawful.com/articles.php?a=1870 . There ya go. |

I've played it all the way through, and it certaily lives up to its name...the game is pretty funny, but then it just gets downright...well....AWFUL sometimes.

Agreed. It's pretty funny at many points, but sometimes it's just... GROSS. I've never seen the f-word used so many times in one sentence, I'm sure of it.

I've played it too, and I can't say I like the custom monsters. Not only are some of them absolutely disgusting (like the replacement for the Zone Eater...though the new, erm, "cavern" you enter is funny in a sick way), but they're all incredibly ugly. They're simple pics taken from various sources, and almost all of them have horrid palette swaps that make the monsters almost indistinguishable. You can view them all from at least one of the sprite editors available here at CoN, if you wanna see what I'm talking about. Point being, FFVI had excellent enemy sprites, and so I didn't mind random battles so much. Awful Fantasy makes fights much more of a chore.
It can, however, be very funny at times. The new text for when Kefka is first visiting Figaro, and the soldiers brush the sand from his shoes, was so unexpected (and the animation was so surprisingly appropriate) I nearly fell out of my chair with laughter. None of the things done in it couldn't be changed with Yousei's editor, and perhaps LordJ's.
It's not only unimpressive, it's stupid. The battles are terrible, the dialog is complete crap, and the changes made to the world map are... blah. It sucks both from a design point of view and a playing point of view. :/ I never got why it caught on with so many people. Probably just SA's popularity... Wanna see something cool? Download... Only a day of effort (evening, actually) was put into it so it's not too impressive, but hey, I can brag about it having been the first complete event-editted hack released publicly. ![]() -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Quote (Silverlance @ 15th January 2005 15:11) I never got why it caught on with so many people. Because, despite being ugly, vulgar, and buggy, it's still one of the most self-evidently extensive hacks out there? Most of the other well-known hacks either: 1) Change only a few specific things (e.g., most of the "super monster" hacks) - the detail work is impressive, but the fact that the rest of the game is not really changed limits the hack's impact. 2) Change lots of things but in a subtle way (e.g., the various "hardtype" hacks) - even though lots of work is involved, it doesn't "look" as impressive since so much is behind the scenes. 3) Change things blatantly but do no better than Awful Fantasy itself (e.g., the other "spoof" hacks, most of which are even worse in terms of editing and so-called humor, at least in my experience) - since AF makes more changes than any other spoof hack I've seen, it only stands to reason that it'd be more popular than most of them. 4) Change something new and unusual, but as a proof-of-concept rather than as a complete and playable game hack. These are extremely nifty, but as proofs-of-concept, they're not the sort of thing that anyone's likely to spend hours playing. That said, there's definitely plenty of room for some good hacks that do make substantial changes to the game, in my opinion. I'd heard of that proof-of-concept hack of yours before but not seen the link to it; I'm definitely planning to give it a try. |

Although it was only something minor, it still contained an event edit and was practically complete. If you don't count that, New Game + was also about half an event hack, the other half was some ASM code needed to make a universal event flag/treasure box reset event command. Either way, you were beaten to being the first to release an event hack awhile ago. -------------------- |

I'd heard of that proof-of-concept hack of yours before but not seen the link to it; I'm definitely planning to give it a try. Well, actually I just uploaded it here for the sake of showing there's more to hacks than just bad text edits and monster hacks. It's been released over a year ago (almost two in fact) but the link wasn't distributed very publicly until last summer or so because it contained a lot of inside jokes (it was for a project started around the beginning of last summer; this was created during the setup phase before we got around to the real thing). Chances are I'll take it down again in a few weeks to avoid having junk scattered haphazardly in my account, so grab it while it's hot. ![]() I think that with the amount of information available, even at the time SA's hack was released, that hacks that go beyond what Yousei/LordJ's editor can do are pretty easy to do. There's no excuse for releasing something so bad as SA's hack, especially considering the amount of people in their forums that could give a helping hand with editing the necessary things. A CoN hack would interesting. ![]() ![]() This post has been edited by Silverlance on 15th January 2005 20:44 -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Yep, a CoN hack certainly would be interesting. It would probably be going faster too if I knew what I was doing. >_>

I never cared much for the amount of swearing in FFVII let alone this. Still, interesting what average folk can do nowadays.
