So, I got Metroid Prime 2 for Christmas last year and didn't want to play it until I could beat the final boss in Metroid Prime. Unable to beat the boss, I shelved both games. I recently brought out Metroid Prime 2 once again, even no having beaten the original. I must say, I expected much better.
Not to say that I'm disappointed, because I'm not. I just think that it was much worse than it could have been. How so? you might ask. Let us review the details. Setting- Ah, the setting. One of the worse factors of this game. I feel that the setting was extremely baron and seemed to carry no quality. I remember in the original Metriod Prime getting off of Samus' ship on Talon IV and thinking... "Wow, this game already rocks." This setting did not carry as much detail or vivid life as its predecessors, even the originals. It was like, i step into a rocky wasteland of cliff in the first few minutes. Then I go to a baron wasteland of sand. Then to the murky swamp, also within a baron wasteland. I just wish there were more settings and environments like that of the Phendra Drifts or Talon Overworld'sI also think that the "Dark World" was not very well thought out and all the rooms were indistinguishable from one another. Having to rush trough each room did not help at all, I must say. Combat- Just as smooth as its predecessor. Its real time strategy really caught on this time. The only complaint I would have about combat is that in the dark world it becomes extremely limiting and difficult to try not to step outside the barriers. Plot- Geh. Way to overplayed. The whole Dark vs. Light thing stopped appealing to me long ago. There were some interesting spins, but it seemed so predictable as to what would happen next. I am currently not all the way through the game, but my friend, who has beaten it, says that the swamps are about half way through the game, which is where I am now. But honestly people, how repetitive can they get? Dark Beam, Dark Suit, Dark Visor.. it starts to hurt my eyes. Other I'd just like to include here that it may seem I rambled off about all the bad things of the game, making it seem worse than it is. I left out a lot of the pluses from the first Prime because I'm assuming most who have played the second one have played at least some of the first. Anyway, the new scanning took a little time to get used to (I'm used to those little boxes you can lock onto) but it seems to have improved a bit, by telling you what you have and have not scanned. I also thought it a little weird to get both the dark and light beams almost one right after the other. Also, the Dark Suit is friggin awesome looking. But overall, just not up to my expectations. Still bearable, sometimes even exciting, but it's sub par. Now that I'm done rambling, what do you think of this game? Was it as good as the first Prime? As good as its earlier predecessors? Post your thoughts please. Edit For the record, I'd give it a 6.5 outa 10. I wouldn't say it was THAT bad, but I do think it was a small step down from the first installment. First of all, the diminished role of space pirates was a little dissapointing. I also didn't like the whole limited ammo concept. I liked being able to march into a place in the first one with the right weopon on and just blast away. It was annoying to have to switch back and forth between light and dark beams to fill up ammo. I didn't have too much trouble with the setting, and I liked the concept of the keybearers and everything, but overall it was just a little less satisfying then the original.

I generally loved Metroid Prime 2 mostly for its stunning graphics, sound and music, and the puzzle of trying to get every upgrade and find every secret, just like in the first game. I like the Metroid series in general, even though I've only played Prime 1 and 2, fusion, the original, and zero mission.
The scenery is always gorgeous and the fact of having to travel between two worlds through certain portals is very strategic as to how to get around. The bosses are pretty linear, with many repeating strategies, but they are a lot tougher(Aka: lottamore life) than in Prime. I generally love this game as one of my top 10! ![]() ![]() -------------------- <DrkMagimaster282> MWAHAHA. The setting for metroid prime to was actually what it needed to be. The planet is being ravaged by an alternate dark version of the enhabitents(sp?) and there are very few of them left. The space pirates are mainly there because of the phazon but they dont play a major role in it cause they were suppost to not be the main villans of the game. In reguards to the whole light dark thing i thought it was pretty ingenous how they did they dark world. Not only was it challangeing in fights but it also made you think stratigically about how to do things. It also give you a reason to get new suits and expansions. Like in its prediseccor prime you had to get the veria suit to survive magmore. With reguards to limited ammon i actually think its a better system than just makeing it infinit, i mean lets face it you have to be accurate and you need to have skill to use the right amount of ammo. Then if you ran out you have a less powerful verson but one that could do the some what the same job as that one.
My only complaint really about the game is i dont not personally like the jumping system in morphball mode i think that was alittle unessacery to make you have to plant a bomb every time you wanted to jump in the thing. I like the challange of this game though its one that makes you think on your feet and if you are trapped at a certian area you have to try even harder to beat that area so you can move on. All and all i think they did a wonderful job, though metroid played a minor role they did manage to make a new kind of metroids. I also thought the beginning was a bit lacking in depth but is certinaly more than makes up for it with story line and all the challangeing battles. I have highly recomened it to my friends who want a bit of a challange in a game cause if you get to the point where i am at (the screw attack) it gets even more challangeing cause you have to litteraly use everything you have gotten thus far in the game to progress through the areas. A factor about this game i dont want to spoil this for you though since you havent beat prime but it is a direct tie in with prime with the use of dark samus. I really think dark samus was one of the best villans ever created, the fact that she is some what of a mirror image of you makes the battle challangeing as well as makes it all the more harder to kill her. She is one of the villans that is the most challangeing because she uses some of your attacks against you as well as some that are uniequly her own. All and all i give this game high praise and very high marks on game play and equipment. Even if the whole dark light thing is alittle cleche it still has perpous in this game. The dark visor i find to be one of the handest visors in the game mostly on the dark pirate comandos and ing hunters. The echo visor is all one handy visor as well. I give this game a 10 out of 10 keep up the good work ![]() -------------------- Don't fear the reaper! Sanctuary alone more than makes up for the drab scenery elsewhere in the game.

The ammo made this game horrible. You could in theory quite easily trap yourself at some point in this game. Forced to use the charge beam throughout the entire game... ugh, not very fun.
Phazon Samus fights were awesome though. -------------------- This is my world: (Got my second chapter up, 3rd Chapter about 80% complete) http://www3.sympatico.ca/daniel876/homepage.html |

You do know you can reload your ammo at Samus' ship or a ammo station.. don't you? But anyway, I guess this game was better than I gave it credit for. It becomes better and better every minute, but still does not completley amaze me. And having just entered sanctuary, the designers may have just put all tehir enery into creatign one fabulous looking area. I thought they were both incredible games. I prefer Prime, but Echoes did a wonderful job.
How can you say Echoes had less scope? Did you even go to Sanctuary? The moment you look out across that bridge at the huge fortress, you know that this is truely epic. Sheesh. I respect your opinionm, however. I just ask this: if you say you weren't disappointed, then why a 6.5? I not-disappointed score would be 8+. Regardless, Echoes made me realize that huge bosses arent important. Dark Samus showed that clearly. I cant wait for the last entry in the trilogy though... -------------------- "Dance, water, dance!" -Demyx, Kingdom Hearts II "I met my love before I was born..." -AFI, 'Love Like Winter' from 'Decemberunderground' Currently Playing: Guitar Hero, Shadow of the Colossus |
