You all claim to be the greatest players and gurus of FF6, well I ask you this:
Have you ever beaten the game without ever fighting a random battle? (excluding Veldt & cactuars, no exp=fair game) I did this the last time I played FF6, and it was one of the toughest things i've ever had to do. This is true powergaming. You need to know all the tricks, and all the loopholes for defeating characters. My characters are level 14, have an average of 240 hp (except for Mog, who got boosted up to 16 cuz of the game and is a beast with around 300 hp). It can be done, and has been done. I just wanna know if I'm the only person to have done it ![]() BTW, i'm sure this has been discussed in detail for a long time and I just haven't read the thread, but the HARDEST FIGHT in the game is the Cranes at Vector. That fight took me at least 30 attempts, and it's the only fight I ever had large problems with, mostly because of party/equipment restrictions. Another debate: Best character in the game? Mog. With a snow muffler getting him up to 255 defense, he can dance away any enemy. Coolest character? Well, Gau. Best attacks, blue mage 4tw. |

Firstly, almost none of us claim to be top dog in FF VI. Only Master Zed can hold that title.
Secondly, it's almost impossible never to fight a random battle. A few steps in any dungeon yields you one. I assume you mean running away from every battle to avoid experiance gain. Such a thing has been done before and is called a Low Level game. In the Final Fantasy VI section of Game FAQs there are plenty of guides that tell you how to do so. I've never done it myself though because I've never been complled to and probably never will be for quite some time. I'm having a tough enough time trying to outsmart AirForce just about three to five levels lower then normal right now and dangit, it's hard. Edit Commenting on below: Ah, how rude of me to forget Djibriel. Detah, i90 and several other members are highly knowlegable of the game as well. Still, Master Zed's the only one with mention in the forum's FF VI discription and quite deservingly. It's quite amazing what that Zed can pull out of his hat at times. Easy as hell. Save for a few spots, it's a real joke. Much more fun than beating it by gaining mass levels, though.
How is it possible? Stick your party in the back row. You can actually survive quite a bit of damage that way. And how do you solve the cash issues? Locke steals, party runs; or fight on the Veldt where magic points and gold are aplenty and experience not given. One easily overlooked strategy is to stock up on Phoenix Downs: when you're at a point where a single attack will kill a party member, instead of a "healing damage" character you'll have a "reviving the dead" character. Pretty much boils down to the same thing. It's like having a character with 4 HP but taking only 1 damage everytime, sorta. The only trouble spot I had was on the floating continent, or rather the approach to it. The encounters with the Empire's airforce were a real pain. Then there's Ultros and Chupon (the easiest part, really.) And finally, before you can recover from that last fight, there's the IAF. Luckily there's a save point right at the start of the floating continent. And how does one survive bosses with spells that hit everyone? Wall ring is your friend for the WoB. After that, you grab mog and the moogle charm, pick up some equipment, and raise Celes' MBlock to 128+. Then, you head to the top of the Cult tower, sit there while the boss drains his MP with spells (takes ages, hehe...), grab the economizer, and lay waste to the rest of the WoR with a near-invincible character that can shoot Ultimas left and right (I believe you'll lose the 128 MBlock if you remove a white cape from one of your relic slots, but it'll still be high as hell.) Piece of cake, really. Once you hit the WoR, you're on easystreet. If you want a real challenge, do the same in a game that doesn't have such a terrible row system. Or stick everyone in the front row. ![]() -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Quote Firstly, almost none of us claim to be top dog in FF VI. Only Master Zed can hold that title. I guess somebody underestimated my arrogance. I must admit that should ZED and myself find ourselves in a fight to the death where our only weapons are trivia questions, I'd be most likely dead in the water; but I like to believe it's a close one, dagnabbit! Meh, enough with measuring manlihood in trivia knowledge. We all know that's what CoN stars are for. I've done it once; in fact, after Zelgaddis released his guide I did it without equipping Espers and other items which teach me spells. Gau's a great help if you know how to use him, and if you write a document about him you learn a thing or two ![]() -------------------- |

Quote (Djibriel @ 10th April 2005 06:01) Gau's a great help if you know how to use him Gau is THE best character for this. I think it might be near-impossible NOT to use him. ![]() -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

What about the Solitary Island? Where the enemies die before you can run away? Riddle me THAT, Spider-Man.

I started one of these a while back, and I hit a problem at the Battle of Narshe - namely, how to thread the needle and only defeat Kefka. Trouble is, I thought there were much better things to spend my Veldt money on than sprint shoes. Now I'm SOL, because my LL save slot is right before the battle. Ah, well, going to have to redo this sometime.

I did this a few years ago and it was not that hard. Granted I am a fan of leveling up but a friend told me the challenge tried it and completed it. I think there are other FF games where this would be harder.
Although during the whole coarse of the game I probably fought a few random battles cause I forgot but in all fairness it not a challenge that determines who "the ultimate FFVI gamer is". Little trick for unevitable battles...
While it is possible to avoid all but a few battles (mainly the ones while escaping from Vector), it's easier to just stick an exp code in there to set your exp to 0. Purists might consider it cheating, but the essence of the challenge is intact: your level does not budge. In fact, it's even lower because you don't have to gain a single exp, whereas in a normal play-through there are a handfull of battles where you have to fight enemies and can't escape. Either way, even after gaining 3-4 levels because of little accidents here and there, the challenging elements are still there. ![]() -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |
