Every since I can remember, I've been playing tactical RPGs. It all started with Shining Force 1 (which I would highly recommend to anyone).
There should definitely be more entries into this genre of games. If you were looking for some more titles, and don't mind the more kiddie themes, FFTA is a pretty decent game. |

Woops Sorry Man Some People! Anyways yeah most Tactics have kiddie themes.
There are others like Romance of the Thee Kingdoms Front Mission and Brigadine. There alot of Military ones too. But I don't know if RpG Tactic games will ever get over the Kiddiness.. ( if that is even a word) -------------------- Blah Blah Blah Blah! Newgrounds! ROCK! |

I'm a huge fan of FF Tactics, Ogre Battle 64, Ogre Battle: The Knight of Lodis, Fire Emblem: Generations of the Holy War, Fire Emblem: Sword of Seals, Fire Emblem: Blazing Blade, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, and Front Mission 3. Those are my favorite SRPGs besides Final Fantasy Tactics. There's also the Advance Wars series, but that's really not an RPG.

Two questions about tactical games:
1. What genre would Advance Wars be considered? Why wouldn't it be considered an RPG? 2. What genre would Mega Man Battle Network be considered? RPG+Strategy/Tactics+Action? -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! 1. I don't consider Advance Wars a strategy-RPG because individual combat units (not COs, but the units themselves) aren't characters in themeselves. They're produced at factories and have unlimited use, more like Starcraft than FF Tactics in that regard. Like Starcraft and Warcraft, Advance Wars has a character-driven storyline and RPG elements, but Warcraft and Starcraft aren't SRPGs, they're hardcore strategy.
2. I'm not overly familliar with the Battle Newtork series (I only played the first one, I think, and didn't like it) and I'm not exactly sure what to call it. I lean towards action RPG than strategy RPG, but I really can't give a great argument in either direction. It's an RPG. -------------------- |

Hmm, as far as the word "tactical" or "strategical" goes...
Final Fantasy Tactics (Advanced) Fire Emblem (GBA) Romance of the 3 Kingdoms VIII Chess (I even animated a chess game against one of my friends for class. It was fun!) -------------------- Neneko is Neneko because Neneko couldn't be Neneko if Neneko wasn't Neneko! --as quoted from Neneko, Mahoraba {Heartful Days} I can stab a man with a thick paperback book thru the ribcage. |

I got hooked on strategy games with Romance of the Three Kingdoms II, which whittled away two years of my youth. I loved the way it played, which is amusing, because I hate a lot of the newer ones (Advance Wars - didn't like it much). Tactics games like FFT is fun, but only because it has a more random feel than the preplanned battles in Advance Wars - which really felt more like a puzzle game than anything else.

I bought Vagrant Story, and while it's not one of Square's slowed-down ATB-mode games, it's fairly tactical. Your character moves around line a platformer but when you attack with your weapon, you can choose which part of the enemy's body you want to attack on. Severely damaging the legs, for example, halves the move rate of the enemy, while whacking on the arms a few times lowers strength a bit. This works for the main character, too, so there is a level of trickery involved.
Oh, and you can do combos when you attack which can be linked if your fingers are fast (which they might not be if you play on Wait Mode all the time Involving story so far, and it has an FFT feel to it. Graphics aren't too shabby either, and it doesn't form any hindrance when you need to see where you're going--key for an out-and-about platformer-type. I got it for twenty-five bucks, which someone said is a ripoff price, but I consider it an investment. -------------------- It's gonna be a glorious day I feel my luck can change |

Quote (The Goddess Terra @ 26th October 2005 17:01) Anyways yeah most Tactics have kiddie themes. There are others like Romance of the Thee Kingdoms Front Mission and Brigadine. There alot of Military ones too. But I don't know if RpG Tactic games will ever get over the Kiddiness.. ( if that is even a word) I'd have to say that's a rather unexpected generalization in my eyes. There are perhaps one or two tactical/strategy RPGs that I've, in the past, heard or found to be a bit childish in their presentation (like FFTA, although it didn't matter much), but I've never thought of that aspect as being dominant, nor anywhere close. Some of my favorite games within the genre - Bahamut Lagoon, Fire Emblem 4 (aka, Genealogy of the Holy War/Bloodlines of Jihad/Crusade), Fire Emblem 9 (Path of Radiance), Disgaea, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Tactics Ogre, to name just a few - are not at all kiddy in the least. The same can be said for plenty of 'em that I dislike. Truthfully, you have me curious here; I'm running kinda low on tactical RPGs that suit my interest seeing as I've pretty much played them all by now, so I'm looking for ones I may not have tried or even heard about yet. If you could elaborate 'bout these "kiddie" games, I might just find 'em fun. Mature or immature - I care very little. Anyways, Bahamut Lagoon will likely always be my favorite tactical/strategy RPG. It's an SNES/Super Famicom game by Square that unfortunately never received a domestic release, but it's well worth hunting down or finding a ROM of as far as I'm concerned. -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will.
