Why are the shrine knights the one's that are the bad guys? I thought that the two kings were the bad guys?

I don`t remember this game by this time, but shrine knights were manipulating the whole war to make Larg and Goltana lose credibility, I think, besides their try to make a new order with many sacrifices and sort of bad things...that´s why Izlude had to be killed too..because he knew the evil that can be released with the power of the stones..well that`s I can remember by now..

From my understanding, the Shrine Knights' goal was to gather the holy stones and revive St. Ajora. The two kings were merely at war with each other, the Shrine Knights manipulated both sides for example,

No, you're right. The Shrine Knights are little bastards. The events of FFT were all rigged, right until the ending credits. Thats why I love FFT so much. It's such a great story, hehehe.
Granted, the Shrine Knights didn't do EVERYTHING, but they were responsibe for a lot of the conspiracy, as was the church. -------------------- "Dance, water, dance!" -Demyx, Kingdom Hearts II "I met my love before I was born..." -AFI, 'Love Like Winter' from 'Decemberunderground' Currently Playing: Guitar Hero, Shadow of the Colossus |

I think I remember now! The shrine knights were the ones collecting the stones, and the two kings were just in a war. The shrine knights had nothing to do with the actual war, besides manipulating it if I am correct.

Yes. Vormav and his followers just used Goltana and Larg as pawns in obtaining the Holy Stones. They were at war, and their power could be easily manipulated.

Was Beowulf a Shrine Knight? Wait... no... he was a Temple Knight. What was the difference? He worked for the church, too.

Beowulf Kadmas was a Temple Knight of the Glabados Church. He left the church becuase he fell in love with Reis, and the rest in history...
So yes, they are essentially the same thing. It would seem that Beowulf worked under Vormav for a while. What does Beowulf mean when he says "I owe them one" does that mean he was with the church that is collecting the stones? and if so who was the priest who turned reis into a dragon? was it the priest whom vormav stabs around the end of the game?
also... arent priests suppose to like... not do it lol -------------------- Peace sells... but Whos buyin? -Megadeth You wont be saying that when you get a lead pipe across the head -James (Darkness Illusions II) |

The priest that turned Reis into a dragon was named Buremonda. He has nothing to do with the main story. The priest that dies in the chapel (the one Vormav kills) is Funeral. He is the High Priest of Murond. And Funeral was being used, too. -------------------- "Dance, water, dance!" -Demyx, Kingdom Hearts II "I met my love before I was born..." -AFI, 'Love Like Winter' from 'Decemberunderground' Currently Playing: Guitar Hero, Shadow of the Colossus |

The term "shrine knight" appeals to more than one group of people.
The first group of Shrine Knights are those collecting the Zodiac Stones. These are the people embedded within Glabados' hierarchy and do work for Funeral. Anyone who has been chosen to carry out the Zodiac Brave legend would also fit into this category. Characters in this category are:
The second group consists of normal (generic) characters employed by the church and those who "guard" the secret of the real goings-on in Glabados. Also, this could definition could be extended to those special characters who work or have worked for the church at some point. Examples of these characters:
Examples of generic characters who are those who accompany Izlude in the Orbonne Monastery, those who accompany Balk in the Bed Desert, those bid the task to guard St. Murond Temple, and those few who accompany Rofel at the fourth-floor rendezvous in Orbonne Monastery. -------------------- It's gonna be a glorious day I feel my luck can change |

Yep. So really, Shrine Knights are the leaders of the Temple Knights, if you will. I suppose that's the best way to describe it, yes?
NOTE: I would assume that Reis was mos likely part of a clergy. I can't see her as a Knight (unless you make her one, though she is best as a Ninja IMO). -------------------- "Dance, water, dance!" -Demyx, Kingdom Hearts II "I met my love before I was born..." -AFI, 'Love Like Winter' from 'Decemberunderground' Currently Playing: Guitar Hero, Shadow of the Colossus |

Well, Glabados wasn't a normal church. It's still probably forbidden, but the whole friggin place is corrupt, so meh, I suppose Buremonda could. He was a *****bag anyway.

lol
I guess I basically mean that the knights that fight with Vormav, Rofel, and Kletian are actually Temple Knights. I don't remeber what the game calls them (I'd assume just Knights, Priests, etc), but essentially thats what they are. Like Shotgunnova said, the Shrine Knights are referred to as big characters, such as Vormav, Izlude, Meliadoul, etc. They could be the same thing, though FFT never explains it. -------------------- "Dance, water, dance!" -Demyx, Kingdom Hearts II "I met my love before I was born..." -AFI, 'Love Like Winter' from 'Decemberunderground' Currently Playing: Guitar Hero, Shadow of the Colossus |

did anyone ever notice how blasphemous this game is, taken into context? it really shows how much clout square had in 98, that they could make a game about an evil, corrupt religious institution that everyone believes in unquestionably and who turns out to be demon-led manipulators. spooky.

Jus' goes to show that Square actually has the stones go out there and make a game with these kinds of storylines and themes regardless of what any critics say about it. That's why they're are as popular as they are now. (And the money, too.)

about the blasphemy, I think squaresoft was recreating the "Holy Inquisition" era, meaning the "Oscurantism", and era where basically church was powerful, because the men lose their confidence and found it in the Divine, into God....for example, the church could technically gives a you a place in heaven in exchange of money, and if you was not religious, they considered you and heresy and burned or hang you, so the corruption and manipulating of people is very justified in the Final Fantasy tactics... ,and in history itself ,today we study how stupid we were in the past, but back then was consirdered for real,... the game makes hate the religion itself for a while, but I`ll say I got faith 15.

I would imagine that Square probably drew from the Catholic church's conspiracy. It is a good setting for a war story, so why not? Regardless, I think Square did a better job of telling it .

i beat it recently i remember the church used the shrine knights to destroy both sides and then the church would be the mediator between both sides, they would use the myth of the holy stones as a way of getting people to put their faith totaly in the church so they would have all the people behind them

I just don't see the logic in the shrine knights, and the church being the baddies.I't just does'nt make any sense at all.I mean, should'nt they be fighting for god,and doing good in the world. It's really confusing.
