Hey guys.
I'm playing FFIV (hardtype) for the first time through, and can't beat this dark elf punk at all no matter how hard I try. It's a sensitive part in the game, because it's hard to level in the dungeon where noone can equip metal, and there's little to be done outside. What should I do? |

Try, Try again.
This doesn't seem useful, but it's really good standard RPG advice. Or go level...that helps sometimes too. -------------------- "That Light has bestowed upon me the greatest black magic!" |

You most likely need
Possible spoilers: highlight to view the harp from Edward, he is in the castle on the room to the left of the main hall. Once you have the harp, he will play music once you fall versues the dark elf that will conteract the magic property of the cave. So what I'm saying is, it will let you equip metel again and give you a second try. I think he is supposed to beat you so that Edward could save you. -------------------- Could you repeat that? |

I've never gone to the elf before speaking to Edward...man, now I wanna go through it all just to see what happens.
![]() And no, you cannot beat the Dark Elf in the first fight...it is a mock battle. Chances are even if you were all at level 99 you wouldn't be able too, just like the mock fight with Kain. -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

I'll tell you what happens. The jerk hits for 9999 damage with everyhit and you can't even touch him. I was doing a rush play recently and completely forgot the Damcyan twerp. My favorite strategy is kicking the Elf into 2nd form then using Weak. It works almost all the time and then its 1 hit KO after that.

I had trouble with the Dark Elf the first time I played because of the cr@p walkthrough I used. It said to use the mythril sword and not fight any battles in that level.
Worst advice ever. Use the light sword, since the Dark Elf is weak to it. And fight the battles (can't remember why it said not to; I think it was a situation where the enemies are only weak against magic. FF3j walkthroughs make the same mistake by telling you not to fight. Ignore those). |

just hit him a few times and then he changes to dark dragon use weaken/wind to reduce him to 1hp. in 1 blow he is dead. the enemies in the cave are easy as well.
i played easy and hardtype, the hardtype is not hard at all... and if you want to level up cecil put him in the rear he will only take 1 hp per hit. instead than 200-300 hp from each enemy. a good place to level before entering the cave is next to the wood in the north where you find the black chocobos, however, retreat every time if you see a python and only have cecil alive in the party(to level him). mine is in the tower of zot(valvalis) at lvl46. i did use the same trick there to level him up quickly, especially with the summoned puppets i kill mulitiple times in combat i could get like 30.000-60.000 expierence points per battle there. |
