Well since this topic started in another forum but was getting off topic im starting a new one. which Internet browser do you use and Why?
I personnally i prefer IE. much faster and i know how to run it and have lowlevel hacking skills on it. firefox is smarter and harder to get around blocks and such. but due to recent events i might try firefox again. -------------------- Sata Tsubasa no Tenshi- Barret - "Cloud the group has been talking and we feel that its time for a new leader." I use firefox, myself. Annoying when it auto-updates sometimes, but tabbed browsing, fairly decent speed, and a few less holes. IE's okay, but frankly, I've got too used to tabbed browsing and haven't a clue when, or if, IE will ever have tabbed browsing.
Edit On the subject of FF Slowness and Memory spikes, I personally only encoutner stuff like that in both IE and Firefox: Java, quicktime plugins, opening a PDF... Still, Insecure Exploder is going to have to fight quite hard to lose that joking taG, AND Firefox is some way away from "earning" the nickname "Fatally Flawed" or some thing. And Opera... Well, it's quite aptly named, it's virtually a phantom. IE's okay, but frankly, I've got too used to tabbed browsing and haven't a clue when, or if, IE will ever have tabbed browsing. IE7 has tabbed browsing, and a couple of other cool features. I use IE. FireFox, frankly, is too bloated and slow for my tastes. And as for security, holes are starting to appear in FF too now. It probably won't end up like IE anytime soon (let's face it: with all those years behind it, a browser would have to be either of legendary complexity or downright simple not to have holes popping up ![]() I don't miss tabbed browsing. Personally, it annoys me: I hate having multiple ways to switch windows (alt+tab, ctrl+tab...) because I'll always unevitably mess myself up by hitting the wrong key. At most I only have a dozen windows/programs open at once so I never saw it as much of an advantage. What I do like about FireFox is the way searches work - IE really sucks in terms of searching. ![]() But my browser of choice, personally, remains IE. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

As much as I hate to admit it, IE7 isn't that bad in Beta 2 form. The latest massive design I've been working on behaves very nicely on it, which is a pleasant surprise given that it's standards-based. I find that IE7 is slow as sin to load up and spawn tabs, though.
I've also just downloaded Opera 9 Beta, which is also pretty nice in terms of standards compatibility, is pretty quick even on my weak work laptop, and has the functionality to save open tabs on close right out of the box, which is a clever touch. But something just doesn't feel right about its UI to me. That said, the default browser on all three of my personal computers and my work machine is Firefox. I've never experienced the memory spikes and slow functionality that others have; the fact that it's open source means that security flaws tend to be patched, worked into the trunk, and autodownloaded at high speed, and it's extremely customizable in ways that are perfect for the way I use it. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Firefox does it for me, personally. IE is getting better since it actually has competition now, but no doubt Firefox will begin to lag as more people begin using it. It's pretty much given that once software becomes popular hackers will try to disable it.

I use Firefox, but would have no problem using IE. (I don't really notice a difference, really.) It's just that all my bookmarks are on Firefox, and I can switch songs on Winamp. ^-^.

I use IE. I don't think that I've ever even tried FireFox. But, IE works just fine for me and so there hasn't really ever been a need for me to look elsewhere.

Well, like I said in another thread, I'm forced to use IE while at work. I actually prefer it, though. We have a slimbrowser that allows for tab based surfing, and I hate it.

I was an IE user for the longest time. I just thought 'Ah, IE's decent enough. Getting FireFox, like everyone suggests, is too much effort.'
Then, I finally got it, and haven't looked back since. Efficiency's the key word here - it's faster, there's tabbed browsing, it's far easier to customise one's browsing experience - and I certainly get less viruses now. Now, I've got a hand in the fanart aspect of the site, and this is where FireFox really shines. No more multiple internet windows that I have to flick between! No more calculators for working out image sizes! No more 'image cannot be displayed' type errors (well, fewer, anyway)! FF's 'properties' box is vastly superior. FireFox: It just works. Well, except for when it's like 'you don't have windows media player, lols' when I totally do. |

i use firefox right now. when i first started using i didn't see any difference between it an IE. just as fast(for me, at least), not really seeing any pop-ups for either one, etc. now, i couldn't imagine switching back to non-tabbed browsing.
my only problem with firefox is the auto-update. when i installed firefox for the first time, i took up about a mere 10 mb. no problem at all. after the first auot-update, it shot up to 250 mb. wtf!? -------------------- moé in the streets, senpai in the sheets |

I'm running on Firefox and have for almost a year now. It's a lot neater than IE was, as in the in-brower tabs keeps things nice and organized for me, something I appreciate greatly. I don't have any of those "slow" problems, it runs quick enough for me and I'm pretty impatient. It's never froze or crashed on me, which IE used to do all the friggin' time, there's a lot less pop-ups and random junk that comes about this way too, which is nice.

I prefer Firefox for the search function (which, like many other things on my computer, I've strongly customized to my tastes), chatzilla, having a convenient way of letting me allow or deny cookies, and the fact that it doesn't gather as much crapware as does IE.
I sometimes use IE, but that's generally when I need a different browser with a different set of cookies. I also happen to have the little OffByOne mini-program "portable" freeware browser, but that's just for the fun of having it. It's faster than Firefox in some cases and has a lot of similar functionality, but for a web developer like me Firefox has superior capabilities. Opera 9 is a solid bit of software from what I've used it, and I'd recommend it over IE7 but not quite over Fox. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Quote (Hamedo @ 21st June 2006 05:06) Not much experience with Opera, myself. The concensus is that it isn't very good/fast/practical. I am the single Opera user that has voted here, and likely will be the only one. I'm sick of Firefox and its extension happy feature list. There are many features I've felt should have been there since day one, but won't ever be. These extensions add to the memory hog nature of Firefox and while no one here has apparently experienced that problem, I have, and many times at that. At work, typically I have somewhere on the order of 10 tabs open in about 5 windows. Ignore the horrible feature set of tab organization (inability to move tabs from window to window for one), this is almost guaranteed to blossom from 300 megs of memory to somewhere beyond a gig and a half. Closing tabs doesn't help. I need tab-close-undo. The extension? Probably memory-leaks... but I can't really do without it. So Opera, it has a bunch of things I don't want, but it comes with many things I do and without memory leaks for their entire feature set (from browsing all the way to email). This might be feature bloat, but it hasn't affected their vision, code or the memory imprint, and those are the only reasons why feature bloat is truly an issue. Took me a while to fix their UI though. It looks similar to Firefox now, which I've been using since 0.6 Phoenix and I have quite a difficult time retraining my muscle memory. I also remapped their keyboard shortcuts to be similar to Firefox as well. Both of these problems are my own laziness but I need to be productive now, not later. So Opera offers me what I want. I've tried the rest, put dedicated time (two+ weeks) into using their features and UI. From Safari to Konqueror, Firefox and IE (yes, even beta7)... and after all that I've settled down with Opera. I still miss specific extensions in Firefox (Web Developer Toolbar for certain), but at the end of the day, not even the SessionSaver extension could keep me with that OSS project. -------------------- Visions of Peace - Four Generals, One Empire, and the Returners caught in the middle. |

Firefox does the trick for my. Im not that crazy about the tabbed browsing. Kind of confuses me
But i do like some of the extensions like stumble upon which is kind of funny. And if you are bored it easily kills a couple of hours. Like Silverlance said Firefox is starting to show some security holes. But then again it was expected ,because if its high popularity. -------------------- |

I used IE forever until Tiddles made me download "Firebird"; I've used nothing but it/firefox ever since. I can't use anything but Firefox anymore; the main reasons being the extensions. I read somethingawful.com's forums and there is an extension for Firefox (and Opera too iirc) that will keep track of the posts you've read, link to the last one you read, and it's all color coded and beautiful. I can barely stand to read the SA Forums without it.
As for Opera, everytime I tried to get into it I just couldn't. There's just *something* about the interface that I can't pin down that annoys me. |

Alot of the sites I go to, including this one, are designed for FireFox, so I use that primarily, if just to keep my bookmarks on one browser. Sometimes I find that I have to jump back to iE when I want to watch/listen to certain filetypes, since FireFox kind of requires downloading programs (flash, quicktime, etc) twice.

I'm necroing this topic simply to say one thing - studies prove exactly what I've said about IE users since 2003.
http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/web/07/29/int...dumb/index.html This poll is not really all that useful any more, because it lacks one of the true big players in today's market - Chrome. However, has your choice of browser changed since this thread started five years ago? Mine hasn't, really. I still use Firefox for most everything. My work PC is still on the ancient 3.6 branch because I've been lazy, but my other machines are all up to speed on Firefox 5, with one on Firefox 6 beta. However, I do use Chrome more often now, almost as a sidecar to Firefox for use when I want to have multiple Google accounts logged in at one time and things like that. I'll even use IE9 from time to time for the same purposes, as IE9 really is the most respectable thing Microsoft has put into the browserverse. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

I use FF for almost everything, but I use Chrome on a daily basis too. Sometimes I use IE because I have to (at work), but I try to avoid it at all costs. I'll also test javascripts and stuff on safari and opera occasionally.
Really, once you start using FF addons, it's hard to stop using firefox. There's just so many great addons, like firebug (tried firebug lite but didn't like it). |
