What are the final weapons for all characters in FFVI, if there are any? I know that the Illumina is the ultimate sword, but what about the ultimate Spear, or Paintbrush, etc.?

Ultimate claw is the tiger fang
ultimate spear is the aura lance
ultimate katana/knife (cyan's weapon) is the sky render
ultimate dirk is the graedus (stunner for shadow)
ultimate gambler weapon (setzer's weapon) is debatable between doom darts and fixed dice. dd for consistency, fd for high potential.
ultimate rod is the magus rod.

consult the CoN FAQ; that's what they're there for!

Actually the FAQ doesn't cover weapons or anything of the like. The weapon and armor sections do though.

It's also debatable about which weapon is the best due to preferances, one example of that is the Atma Weapon Vs. Ilumina debate. (I prefer Schmiter and Excalibur myself because there's consistancy and a lack of consumes MP for critical but I'm probably the only one who thinks that way.) Also, due to the non-linear nature of WoR there isn't a weapon you get last per se, unless you find it during your final trip to Kefka's Tower. For most weapons though, Alpha's list is just about good enough. Still, there's lots of room for debate.

You aren't. Magic is the real equalizer in FF VI, more so than in any other FF, possibly, so Ragnarok and Illumina aren't worth it when the drain your MP while forgoing an opportunity to learn Ultima more easily. My sword users typically equip the Excalibur, AtmaWeapon, and Scimitar, but they'll typically only even attack during random battles. It's all about the magic.

Unless consistency is really important to you, the Fixed Dice are vastly superior to the Doom Darts. Yes, there's more randomness to the dice, but even taking low rolls into account, they do much more damage on average than the darts, unless you're counting on the darts casting Doom. The only situation where the Doom Darts are better damage-dealers on average is one where:
-Setzer is high level (high 60s and up, I'd estimate), since the Fixed Dice gain less additional damage per level than other weapons.
-The enemy has quite low defense, since the Fixed Dice ignore defense and the Doom Darts don't.
-Setzer doesn't have the Offering, since the Fixed Dice aren't weakened by the Offering but the Doom Darts are.

Allrighty then! Ultimate weapons:

Brushes: They are horrid. Avoid equipping these at all costs, and opt for the Magus Rod on Relm instead.

Claws: There is only one instance in which you should be using the Fight command with Sabin, and that's when he has a Genji Glove on him. You'll want to go with Dragon Claws then, as unless you have extreme levels a non-super-effective Fight command isn't going to surpass a Bum Rush in damage.

Dirks: It's the Thiefknife(s) for Shadow. Since his ST physical damage will always be superior when using Throw, the Bat. Pwr of his weapons are not important at all. Thiefknife gives a speed boost and an extra 10 % in Mblock, not to mention the ability to steal on Shadow. You *might* want to go with Stunner when the opponent is vulnerable to Stop (Chupon, Poltrgeist, etc.). On Locke, the Valiantknife is the best weapon he will be equipping, unless you chose to raise his Magic Power high enough for him to be a worthwhile magician (in which case he'll be better off with a Thiefknife or Man Eater). All other characters who can equip Dirks are better off with other weapons.

Gambler: You'll want to go with the Fixed Dice, as Corundum said.

Knives: First off, no Fight command from Cyan will ever overpower a Dispatch attack, no matter what level you are. That means the only point in equipping Cyan with weapons at all is when it has something to offer besides simple non-elemental damage. That means either Tempest for Wind Slash or Scimitar for instant-death. I dislike them both, and the Fight command is utterly wasted on Cyan in my opinion (unless GG/Offering, but there are so many better characters to equip that rare Offering), so an 'ultimate' weapon for Cyan is really the best of the worst.

Lances: The only reason you would want to equip these is when you're using Jump. The Pearl Lance is weaker then the Aura Lance, but that random Pearl really makes us for it (1/4 * Pearl damage definately is higher then the difference in the physical attack damage).

Rods: The Magus Rod is really the best bet.

Special: You shouldn't equip them, as Flail/Morning Sun are too weak and Wing Edge is trumped by Valiantknife/Enhancer.

Swords: Foremost, the Illumina IS the best sword, period. A physical strike from it will hurt more then a Flare spell, and it only costs 12 to 18 MP (randomly decided). That is not a lot! Besides, if you think Magic is the best, you won't even use the Illumina for damage purposes anyway, and you get to enjoy that 50 % Mblock and +7 to all stats. If you have the Ragnarok, bet it. If you have the Illumina equip it.

Since the Atma Weapon doesn't deal superior damage on extreme levels, and it gives nothing else but damage, I tend to dislike it. Excalibur and Scimitar really have little going for it, as their damage won't surpass Magic. Therefore, Enhancer on those who don't have the Illumina. 20 % Mblock and +7 in Magic Power is a difference you'll really notice in-battle. Don't let the fact this thing is store-bought trick you into equipping inferior 'legendary' weapons!
