People have been trying to predict the end of the world for several hundred years. Maybe more. So far, no one has been right. I'm not a religious person, so I'm not really in the belief that the world will really end, only maybe become a toxic wasteland someday, but by our own doing. But even when I was religious, I never took end of the world predictions worth a grain of salt because my religious understanding is, that we can't predict it. We really can't know. We can see signs that it might possibly be drawing near, but we can't really pinpoint it. Not even down to the year. That's just my opinion on the matter and I'm not interested in debating it, so if anyone tries to argue my thoughts, I will not respond.

I'm fairly certain that someday, Humaninty will come to an end. My personal belief is, Humankind will be wiped out somehow. I honestly don't think it's going to have anything to do with the way the conspiracies all say, and I'm not too confident we'll ever leave this planet for anywhere further than the moon.

I do not make any predictions about religious influence. The vague ways most religions porclaim the end of the world before the judgement day or the equivelant leave it open to a lot of interpertation, since most of the descriptions are probably metaphorical: Fire from the sky could be anything, explodign sun, meteorite, nuclear holocaust, alien invasion, the air filling with flammable gasses by some freak unforseen accident to do with Hydrogen power then whoosh, etc...

There have been far too many 'coming armageddons' that wound up false over the years for me to honestly belive any apocalypse theory untill it happens. By which time it's hard to argue...

"Oh sure, yeah, the world is really ending, I mean, sheesh, get realAAAAAARGH!"

One thing I am confident of though, is that even when the last human beings have died, and the dust of whatever the hell it was happened settles, the last sound ringing out, will be that goddamned Nokia ringtone...

From what I have heard (way back in the day when I was in high school) was the world was to end at 2024 from a meteor. Frankly whenever it happens I don't care I have done everything I wanted to so if I am going to hell today or 70 years from now...whatever lets all party and have fun!!

Since my childhood, I though about the apocalypse sometime in my life. And I see many documentals of the Bible, one of them said that the Psalms are prophetic, one Psalm cover one year, starting from 1900. That mean that our world will end in the year 2050, because there are 150 psalms. When I was a child, around 8 years old it comes to my mind this idea, that the world will probably end at this Date: 06-06-2006, you know the classic 666 number..but that will be too obvious, won´t it?.I agree with Del S´s ideas, the prophecies of the Revelations are metaphoric, but some points of it, some other has no explain or logic, at least for me.This world is suffering now (I sound like Aeris), many catastrophes, like fundamentalist people who think their are in a global and holy war (terrorists) , and so naturals catastrophes.(Pollution, global heating..), blah blah.., and also a World War might end everything..and we didn´t reach the moon..so our hope on another planet are patethically pathetic.(I sound like Solt), my final addition will be that the Earth will end in a World War in least than 100 years.Probably, for being honest most people this sick me to death (not all) so our end at least will be justified.Cockroachs will rule better this planet. laugh.gif

I saw the sign at the gas station today. $2.27 a gallon for regular unleaded. Yes, the world is coming to an end. I'm going to fight the oppression by bicycling to work. Gas may get up to 3 or 4 dollars per gallon this summer. It's an outrage!

Well while there are some crazy things going on in the world, there has always been crazy things going on in the world. People have always been saying the world is going to end soon. Worrying about the end of the world is a waste of time. When it'll happen, it'll happen.

The world officially came to an end when mankind created decaffeinated coffee, thereby completely defeating the purpose of coffee and effectively creating an artificial antichrist.

How I yearn for the days life was not tainted by these terrible memories...

(Edit: Also, Jesus was not a pot of coffee. But we can pretend he was, though.)

People have been predicting the end since humanity first concieved of religion; doesn't every major ancient mythology have predictions on the end of the world? Its important that we keep in mind our mortality, so as not to become all delusional, but those that send their all lives screaming about how the "sky is falling" end up wasting their time. We all die, someday, and all things come to an end, someday. We can someitmes make educted guesses as to when, but that's usually when its too late to change anything.

I predict the end of the world as we know it will not be sudden... although a few sudden spurts of events may help kick things in faster gear, the world as we know it is constantly in flux. The world we know will simply fade into something else.

When people talk about the end of the world, they don't mean the world itself being destroyed, so much as the collapse of human civilization. Barring massive, global natural disaster (terrestrial or extraterrestrial), "the world" isn't going to end in with a bang.

Of cours, a huge war could bring about a massive change in a short amount of time, but I highly doubt there won't be any survivors in some since. I do believe, though, if anything, we'll be killed by plagues before the nukes get us; assuming any of that even gets off the ground.

One must bear in mind, however, that these are the words of a man awaiting the Inevitable Zombie Apocolypse ™. I don't know when. I don't know where. I don't know how. But it will happen. I'll be prepared... will you?

I'm sure the world will literally end when the sun - like every star - eventually goes out or collapses into itself, whichever. In fact, that might as well be the end of the galaxy, too. Dark, frozen planets floating out of whack and spiraling off into the universe. Course, that's most likely a few million years off, and I fully expect the human race to have destroyed itself by then.

I, however, would be interested in seeing how an apocalyptic event would play out. Imagine the riots, the bandits riding lawnmowers, the mutant frog people, and the looting. Oh yes, the looting!

well this is quite a controversial topic. idk when were are gonna be gone but with all the things going on in the former mesopotamia, it seems like were are approaching the end. aside from that, overcomsuption is another factor that may contribute to this drastic event, but that would be of our own doing. hopefully everything will turn out for the best for everyone....

Well, try looking into the Bible Code. I'm sure it has a time and place there, it's just failing me as to when and what year...

I watched a documentary of it on the history channel from 2004. In it, they said that sometime in the immediate future there would be a conflict between Syria and Lebanon. And then a few weeks ago? Bam, what do you know? It happened. It really is a shocking and somewhat scary tool.

Some other prophecies? An earthquake along the San Andreas Fault that places part of California into the ocean in 2010.

I believe something of a meteor in 2056, HOWEVER there are words around it that basically says we triumph over it, and avoid extinction. I'm sure we'll be able to pull off an Armageddon type manuever by then.

Also, there is prophecied a war between the Chinese and the US. My memory fails me on the year however. huh.gif

I had to think a bit before I responded to this one.

By no means am I an expert on the subject, but I have watched a series of history channel documentaries about the Biblical Code , in addition to one or two about the appocolypse and the book of revelations itself. The fact is, throughout the whole of history, there's always a large number of people who feel that their time is the end times. And thus far, it's quite evident it isn't true. Some of the stuff really creeps me out. As an Agnostic, I admit that some of the stuff in the Biblical Code gives me the friggin creeps. I don't like to dwell upon it, because being an agnostic, I tend to worry alot about what the afterlife means to me, and if Heaven exists, does my being a good person, (If not with words all the time, but most definately in deeds,) secure me a place in heaven.

Alot of the book of revelations may have just been hidden metaphors for the romans of the time, is another theory.

People say they WANT the end of times to happen, but they must have alot of faith, because personally the thought of dying scares the living hell out of me sad.gif

Hmm.. I'm gonna sound heretic here, but okay:
The world has already ended a couple of times. The end of the world doesn't have to mean "earth goes BOOM!" it may however mean a total change of how the world is run. (Fall of the Roman Empire, WW II...such stuff)

The Mayans have been predicting the end for thousands of years. Aparently it'll come in 2012 when their calendar ends. Alright...

The Bible Code is pure crap. If you index any book that way you will find many words and phrases describing each other and predicting events in the same general area. It's too unpredictable... there can be any number of spaces between the characters, so there are tons of possibilities.

I don't think the end is coming anytime soon. I could see major world changes occuring (peak oil, another world war or two, the fall of the USA, etc) within the next several hundred years, as distant possibilities, but I don't think the world is just going to end.

I also watched The Bible Code program on the History Channel last year. It was highly interesting. In the end, I had to dismiss it as a combination of coincidence and nonsense. They REALLY take pains to bring together the names of countries or famous people and string them together with some random word to produce apocalyptic predictions. Aside from that, as one of the professors on the program pointed out, very similar text can be found in Moby Dick.

I don't particularly worry about the end of the world. I think it's because I never find the damn time to think about such things. Ah well.

The world is bound to end eventually. It's just a matter of time. Considering the way we treat this planet and the way it seems to be handling all our abuse, I don't think it'll be THAT far off.

Though extremely exaggerated, the movie "The Day After Tomorrow" comes to mind. I think that's a good example of what could happen; another friggin' ice age for us to deal with. We're going to completely eradicate our ozone layer with all our gas emissions and various other pollutants...not to mention the constant threat of a nuclear holocaust, well, we're not looking at a very nice future are we?

In respect to the religious aspect of it, there've been so many predictions and so many theories on how it's all going to end that it's getting a bit ridiculous. Personally, I think what's finally going to kill us is something we'd never see coming. Before the ozone layer gives way, before the next world war and before the aliens start harvesting us for space snacks, something totally ridiculous is going to get us.

Few small flaws: An accident at a nuclear facility would be seen as an accident, and besides, from what I have read, Nuclear bombs can't always be set off like that -but I'm not bettign otherwise, especially if they're British ones...-. They keep explosives far far away from them anyway.

You were right, that would be an incredbly stupid thing to kill us all, becuase a single nuclear explosion will not end the world, unless it goes sum of all fears

The thing about Apocalypse theories is, you get hundreds, and so many of them just copy each other. How many people keep citing Nostradamus despite the fact he hasn't really predicted anything in crystal clarifty as such, instead, vague quatrains that can be bent to fit certain events are all he has made?

well then i saw the bible code and i sorta took it seriously but then it was all al gore for president... maybe i lol'ed and didnt take it very seriously after words. if there was a nucluer holocaust we live in the world where we fight giant rad scorpions and vicous death claws and join the brotherhood of steel.

if a metor hits the earth it probley going to hit tokyo or New York city so you might have some messed up weather patterns.if you survive those your good to go.

Or theres a chance theres a space bug burrowed deep in the earth waiting for the year 1999 er 2020

As you can see i doubt a single event will take the entire world but if there was going to be a tough challenge its going to be surviving bushes 2nd term pinch.gif

To add to my earlier thoughts, if the world is really coming to an end or we're about to be blown to smithereens by another country, I'd really rather not know about, I don't want to live in fear. That's another reason why I'm not really very religious. I don't want to spend my life preparing for my death.

I predict a violent takeover by zombies. in 2012. no one will see it coming. except for the zombies.

the world won't end, just the world that we know now will cease to exist.

Spoony Bard brings up quite a good point. No, I don't believe that zombies will take over the world in 2012 tongue.gif . I mean the other thing. The world as we know it will probably end before the world actually ends. Think about it, this earth has existed for billions of years and existence has changed so much. At first it was a lifeless blob of dirt, just floating around in space, just like any other blob of dirt. Then somehow, some way, life suddenly appears on it. So ends the lifeless blob and so begins the green earth. Bacteria, plants, animals, people, technology, empires, civilizations, ages and every single aspect of life itself, have all risen out of the wood works and fallen eventually there after. To me, all things so far and all that ever will be, appears to be impermanent.

However, I believe that the world itself will not come to an abrupt end any time soon. It's just not the right time yet. What I believe is that the world as we know it, will be forever changed in such a way as to be seemingly gone. In about 100 years or so, everybody we know will be dead. Technology will change in such ways that we've never even imagined. Maybe even cultural habits themselves will be completely different then what we're currently used to. Hey, it happened to the Romans, it happened to the Aztec's so don't laugh when I say it'll happen to us as well. The world as we know it will probably change into something so different, that we won't even recognize it as "our" world anymore.

As for the end of civilized life, there are many countless roads that could occur. We could all die tomorrow due to a new, rapidly spreading disease that can't be cured in time. We could all asphyxiate on our own toxic fumes in a couple of decades or so. With so many roads to take and the inability to read into the future, we can only guess. What I think'll happen is that we'll all become enlightened and thus not need a samsaric world anymore.

As for the end of the planet Earth, I think our own sun will regain our mass somehow. Weather it'll be through a black hole or expanding far enough to re-engulf our little planet, I don't know but it's the most likely story I've heard so far. It would take one big rock, or really powerful blast to do it any other way.

As for the end of the universe, I don't even know anything about it's origins. I couldn't possibly predict how it would be destroyed.

As for the end of all theoretical extra-universal existence/other worldly realms, well . . .

As for the world ending in 2007, I highly doubt it. What could possibly come about so fast as to devastate humanity so? Sure, it could happen quickly and unwittingly but the chances of that are incredibly small. Still, I'll live every day to its fullest in the knowledge that I could get hit by a truck or killed by a crazed madman, thus ending my own world. You never know.

Well, since the topic is the end of the world, I'll give my perspective.... which is biblical.

The end of times begins with the Rapture. This is where all of those who believe in the Christ are taken immediately to Heaven. Cars will suddenly be left driverless, a man having dinner with his wife could look over to see her clothes and glasses and dentures in the chair, but her inexplicably gone, you get the idea.

Once all Christians are gone from the world, a great leader will step forth and bring peace to the entire world. Amidst the turmoil of losinga % of the Earth;s population to an unexplained phenomenon, this man will guide all nations into a golden age of peace that this planet has never known before. This man is the anti-christ. He will implement the mark of the beast, along with many more submersive yet dominating doctorines, and he will rule.

This peaceful age will continue for 3 and a half years, at which time an attempt will be made on this leader's life. He will survive an amazing wound that no normal person could have, and the world will be amazed by him. Then, the Tribulation shall begin.

This is the time of the Seven Judgements. The angels of Heaven who are mightiest, Michael the Archangel chief among them, shall open the seven vials and the seven seals to unleash woe on this world. The star named Wormwood will fall into the ocean, and the world's water will become poison. Men will pray for death and cover themselves with rocks, but death will not find them. Locusts with the stingers of scorpions and the faces of lions will torment the people, and all will despair.

For another 3 and a half years this continues, until finally, on the plains of the Megiddo Valley in the middle-east, the anti-christ's forces and Jesus and an army of saints have a final, cataclysmic battle. The word "armageddon" is mentioned exactly once in the Bible, and it is used to describe this battle in Revelations.

Once the anti-christ has been put down in a battle that "will see blood flow to the height of a horse's legs", then end of the world will commence. As God destroyed the world once before with water, and promised never to use water in that manner again, it will now be consumed by fire and brimstone.
