Alright, I sense a discussion about the next generation of consoles breaking out in the "Sony" thread, so it would be more appropriate to have a thread devoted to the topic. So what do you guys think about the PS3, X-Box 2 and Revolution? We'll know a lot more about these consoles after E3 but we can still evaluate the current situation regarding the console wars in order to predict the future. Once again here's a link to that DFC article that I find very interesting and informative.
There's no way I'm getting an X-Box 2, and I'll most likely get a PS3 but if Nintendo really does have some great special secret that really does revolutionize the industry then I'd be willing to get a Revolution. It's probably all hype though but who knows. Nintendo seems excited. Most likely Sony's console will have the best library of games yet again. -------------------- FFXI (Siren server) Tauu the Windurstian Tarutaru! White Mage & Paladin |

I think we won't see them until next year, but hey, if the PS3 can still play PS2 games then we should still get a nice selection. On that note the current consols haven't even reached their peek yet. They're still making bigger, better, and more beutiful games so I don't see why the rush...
Oh well, I've never bothered with this 'console war' anyway. I'm not loyal to either side and fail to see why people get so defensive about what they play... As long as Sony has the Final Fantasy, Silent Hill, Dynasty Warriors, Metal Gear Solid, Tekken, and Soul Calibur series I'll stick with them. -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

Right now I am leaning more towards Sony and Nintendo. I have a lot of faith in Sony because I've never been disappointed by their systems and their games. With Nintendo I was very disappointed with the N64, however, I feel that Nintendo made up for that with the GC. So I will definately be getting the Sony and Nintendo next gen console. Microsoft is a little bit shakey with me, though. There are some exciting prospects such as the two games that Mistwalker will be making, and also the possibility of True Fantasy Online Live. Unfortunately, I still hesitate though. I was not impressed with Xbox's RPG lineup and with me, RPGs are the most important. I'm just not in to American RPGs. I guess it's that simple. Two Japanese RPGs may not be enough to compel me to get the system. Of course, KOTOR is an exception, but I don't know if it is worth it to buy the system for just a few games.

To me I think Sony is the future of console gaming, Microsoft leads in online gaming, and Nintendo pwns the handhelds. If the three could just stick to that there wouldn't be a problem! Console gamers (like me) always turn to the PS2, Online gamers usually pick X-Box for its (many) online features, and handhelp fans praise Nintendo.
Hell, if they'd just stick to that they could even make games for each other... I guess good buisness just doesn't make the extra millions though... This post has been edited by Mu the Squirrel on 27th March 2005 18:36 -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

I think he's referring to the fact that Sega has bowed out of the console market and is now working full-time as a developer. Their primary affiliations are with Nintendo and Sony, and basically they have all the resources (and now, better mediums) with which to fully devote time to making awesome games. Other companies who should have a field day with this new hardware that come to mind are Square-Enix, Tecmo, Namco, Capcom, all the biggies. We're about to enter a new golden age, fellas.

Just for kicks, Sega has created a game for Shadow the Hedgehog. I think it's going to be on GameCube and PS2. Looks cool.

i have heard lots of rumors concerning the ps3 here at school. not too many have talked about the xbox2 just yet, and im with phunbaba on the revolution; i havent heard of it quite yet. i think its kinda early to anticipate the releases of these systems. however, i personally think that what is happening now will happen when sony, microsoft, and nintendo unleash their new beasts: sony will reign supreme (or tie with the xbox2) and nintendo will be pretty good, but not good enough. i just think it has to do with the selection of games with each system, but thats another argument. anyways, as Mu said, if the ps3 can play ps2 games, which i think it will, then thatd be great. once those systems come out, i will prolly get a ps3 since ive stuck with sony for quite awhile (and ff of course, lol). i think theyll prolly get released sometime during the holiday season next year.

Like Mu, I've never got into the console wars, so whichever system I see is most promising relies solely on its lineup. Sure, I'm no big fan of X-Box, but I just dislike Microsoft in general like every true Macintosh fanatic; I have no real beef with their console past the fact that it doesn't really have enough exclusives that interest me enough to warrant a purchase (and not to crack on its rhino size, but I also don't have the room). I honestly doubt the X-Box 2 will change that.
Yeah, it's likely I'll get a PS3, but right now I'm more interested in this "Revolution". Whatever Nintendo's new system turns out to be, I'm 99% sure it'll end up in my house. Maybe it's the kid in me talking, but there's no way I can live without my first-party 'Tendo games, present lack of RPG's be damned! -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. They should wait at least another two or three years before getting the next ones going. The current consoles' capabilities haven't been sucked dry yet.

I'd go with the PS3 assuming that it would be able to play PS2 games. If it didn't, then I would probably get an xbox 2 instead.
Also, I've heard that the PS3 may not be able to play PS1 games. Has anybody else heard this, and if you did, is this true? -------------------- Music is a mysterious thing... I think first I'll get the Revolution, since it is supposed to be backwards compatible with the GCN. And then after about a year I'll get the PS3. But I don't count on buying the Xbox 2.

Does anyone know how different the PS1 hardware is from the main PS2 hardware? If it's significantly different enough, then Sony may choose not to add the 'extra' PS1-compatability hardware on to the PS3. If, on the other hand, PS2's features are just an extension, then Sony would probably just fit PS2's stuff onto PS3. So I'd say it all depends on how much more they'd have to port in order to make PS3 back-compatible with PS1. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. It's pretty bad when people say that Xbox is in the lead because it doesn't matter what quantity of good games there are it's the quality of the great games they have. Once again I say that Halo 2 is no improvement from the original. Marginally improved graphics and majorly improved multiplayer. No improvements on storyline and ending or even sound. Although the sound is nice, the storyline and ending suck. Xbox only has about a few major games: Halo, KOTOR, Elder Scrolls and Fable. PS2 has Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, Jak & Dakster, Rachet and Clank, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Grand Theft Auto, Tekken, Dark Cloud and Champions of Norrath and measly GameCube has Metroid, Mario and Zelda. Note that all those Xbox games are coming out for PC or are already out... Oh, and Fable sucked...

I meant the major sequels, though. I don't think that Final Fantasy XIII would come out for Xbox 2, if that's what you mean. Even though Final Fantasy III is coming out on DS it probably isn't going to come out for a while. I mean, look at DoS, it had at least 4 delays and it got released almost 2005. It came out in early spring 2004 in Japan. Crystal Chronicles hardly qualifies as a Final Fantasy, though. It's more Champions of Norrath than Final Fantasy. Holy, the most powerful damaging White magic spell makes ghosts and undead be damaged...

Resident Evil caters and always has catered to both Nintendo and Sony (and RE 4 is porting to PS 2), Jak and Daxter was supposed to be a trilogy that I don't think they'll try to extend, Grand Theft Auto has been ported to Xbox and PC, although Sony has priority. Don't forget Tecmo, who USED to be Xbox exclusive but recently said that it could easily go to multiple systems; Team Ninja's Itagaki said that the PS3 hardware is to his liking, so Dead or Alive 4 and [nouveau] Ninja Gaiden 2 could find their way to PS3. Also, the recent Sonic games (Mega Collection and Heroes) were all multi-platform. Virtua Fighter 4 and 4E were both PS2, but Sega is starting to diversify now. Really, the only developers that are safe are publisher/developers/consoleurs, like God of War and the major Nintendo franchises. I won't be getting any of the next generation of consoles until several years after their release (SO many games to play already!!! I still have PS1 games to finish!), and I will look at libraries first and foremost. Now lemme go back to my Grandia and Star Ocean 2....

PS3 all the way.
I love Nintendo, but a controller with no buttons is dumb. It'll be the death of them as a console-maker. PS3 is backwards-compatible, has 200x the power of the PS2, and has wireless controllers right out of the box. I also has two versions: one for about $250 and the other probably around $500. The cheaper one plays just games, while the other has a DVD burner and other such "enhancements." The XBox 360 is kinda...not interesting. At all. Since Halo is seriously all the XBox has, I see no reason to get a XNext. 'Sides, the PS3 has online play too. Clearly, Sony will dominate in the HiDef Era. The recent PSP and future PS3 will inevitably control all. Well, I'm with Ractoh and I'll go to whatever has FF, but with the announcement that Sakaguchi will be developing for X-Box 2, I'm unsure. PS3 is still my most likely purchase, if only because it will be able to play all the old PS2 games.
