Bwa ha ha, the string of FF7 topics continues!
(Strangly enough, I haven't run out of ideas I actually care about yet o.o) Alright, this'll be mostly a spoiler. Possible spoilers: highlight to view I don't know if there ever was a real answer to this question, if there was though, I don't know of it.... Besides, I'm asking opinions here anyway. Why do you (each of you) think that Aeris was killed during the end of Disc one? (No I don't mean I wanted it sooner or later...) I already know it was essential to the plot, as if not for her death, no holy, and you're dead right near the end -_-. The question is, why do you think the makers of the game (EG: Squaresoft, as I don't know the story writers name o.o) wrote the story to go in that direction. I'm sure there could have been some others ways as to finish the story without Aeris dying. (Actually I had thought of a perfect idea last night.... Not that I remember it anymore though -_-) Just post your opinions here.... When I remember my (self proclaimed) great idea, I'll join in ^-^ See? What'd I tell yah, mostly spoilers. (Actually only one big spoiler which I'm sure every FF fan alreadys knows about) This post has been edited by Strife543 on 16th February 2005 19:15 -------------------- Link: "What is it?" There wasn't much of a reason for it. I remember very little in the game that indicated that
Possible spoilers: highlight to view her death/suicide/sacrifice was necessary for Holy to work (especially considering it didn't activate until the Meteor got close). The only contribution her death had was her spirit summoning the Lifestream to assist Holy in pushing back the Meteor. And that's just an interpretation (with little cause-effect connection). -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |

Well, (considering that I haven't played to that point of the game, but alas, I had it spoiled for me) I took it as a continuation of the Final Fantasy tradition to have some important character
Possible spoilers: highlight to view They've done this since FFIIIj (or FFIIj possibly, since I haven't played that game yet), and it's become a tradition, like Cid (FFIIj?) or Bahamut (FFI) or superbosses (FFI). die during the course of the game. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Perhaps I should elaborate a bit more on this, (I wrote the topic in a hurry earlier)
Possible spoilers: highlight to view The question is, why do you think the game was created so that Aeris had to die, rather than take the story in a different direction and write a different scenario for that point in the game. I wasn't really looking for the actual reason, (You know, Aeris dies in order to summon Holy, etc) I wanted your guy's opinions, k? ^-^ Also, (I figured I'd add this here too) Write what you think could be a different way to end disc one, with Aeris still alive. (Yep, Aeris fan here ^-^) Sorry about that, I guess I wasn't specific enough in the qustion. It definitely happens in IIj. In the Dawn of Souls version, you get to
Possible spoilers: highlight to view I can't think of an FF that hasn't done that, play a secret dungeon in another dimension or something using the playable characters that died during your adventure. Possible spoilers: highlight to view first the four IIj characters, then evidently one in IIIj (which I haven't played), then Tellah (who is the only true "ghost" to help out in the final battle), then Galuf, then Leo, then Aeris, then someone in VIII that I have forgotten (I played VIII only once, and it was 6+ years ago), then Brahne and possibly Vivi (epilogue), then Tidus (also epilogue), and Dycedarg in Tactics(the only important "good guy" that dies, methinks, but a ton of people die in that game...). That's a long list. -------------------- |

Oh, ok. Different story there.
Possible spoilers: highlight to view Aeris had to die so that she could have any kind of influence on the story. If you take away the party moping during Disc 2, then she has less impact on the story than the "secret" characters. -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |

hHere's me thoughts on this subject.
Possible spoilers: highlight to view Prior to Aeris's death, Cloud gets to go on a date with someone at the Golden Saucer; possible dates are Aeris, Tifa, Yuffie, and Barret (I STILL think that's wrong). Chances are, however, you'll be going on a date with Aeris because she has the greatest amount of initial "relationship points." For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, the game keeps track of the choices you make concerning certain party members, and adds points to your "relationship" with that person all for the sake of the date. Anyways, on people's first run through the game, most people will get Aeris, and nearly everyone else will get Tifa. Those two are the two main rivals for Cloud's affections, and a person will most likely have a sizeable opinion about both of them. Heck, Tifa and Aeris are themselves friends. For the most part, though, I'm willing to take a risk and say that very few people will really hate one or the other; they'll like them both as characters, just maybe one more than the other. Now, Aeris's death. If you dated Aeris, you'd probably in shock and go in a homocidal rage. If you dated Tifa, you'd be regretful because you might have paid more attention to her or be more considerate. Zoom right into a battle with JENOVA, except it's playing Aeris's music instead of battle music. After a tearful cutscene, it asks you to enter the next disk. Now you KNOW something is messed up. To top it off, in the next area you go to, you get to learn about the tragic history of Aeris's parents. The developers probably wanted you to miss Aeris at some level, and then maybe you'll pay more attention to your remaining ones. |

Well, from a plot perspective, you've all pretty much covered it. However,
Possible spoilers: highlight to view Aeris' death was heavily influenced by the passing of Hironobu Sakaguchi's mother. He was deeply affected by it, and wanted to explore his thoughts on the impact of death, as well as his believe in an afterlife. This is why Aeris' death is so dramatic and has such an impact on the game, whereas previous deaths in FFs just sort of happen without any significant consequences. |

Possible spoilers: highlight to view Usually when a writer kills off a character it's for dramatic effect. That's just it, plain and simple. Yes, he could have kept her around, but it wouldn't be the same. See what I mean? -------------------- ~Status Report~ * Completed... Dragon's Head * Completed... I'm gonna kill dat #@$% and make Tifa teh new heroine." Yep, yep, that's what happened. ![]() ...No, really: Quote (http://flaregamer.com/b2article.php?p=81&more=) Possible spoilers: highlight to view It was also Nomura's idea for Aerith to die and Tifa to become the main heroine of FF7. In the beginning there was Aerith and no Tifa. Then one Sunday night, during a phonecall to Yoshinori Kitase (Director), he said "Let's kill Aerith and bring out Tifa". They never had a type of story where there were two heroines and one dies. ~Rogue This post has been edited by Luthien Rogue on 23rd February 2005 22:41 -------------------- ~I'll teach you all this, in eight easy steps, in the course of a lifetime you'll never forgot. I think it was a good idea, as my first RPG I ever really got into there has still been nothing in ANY game to follow that tops it.
You just can't top the drama of the scene after all you'd been through before it, you got really attached and as at the time I didn't have the net so had NO idea it was ganna happen. The re-vamped scene in the DVD movie in no way' could EVER catch that drama, because it's not the actual scene but all that leads up to it as well. And that's why I think they did it, you'd got so very attached to the character that that one scene really drove home a burning want and need to kill Sephiroth because you lost something you couldn't get back. I think, if you feel the need to try to bring the character back in your mind because you simply can't accept the loss (and 1,000 false rumours saying you can prove people did that) then they succeeded in there goal to inject some true movie-esque drama. ^^ No 'other way' could have drawn on the fan base like that one single scene was able to. -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

Possible spoilers: highlight to view The writer wanted aeris to die because his mother had died during the making of the game and he thought that this effect would be just as effective if a person got close to the character this is true because it was said in an interview Moderator Edit Already posted earlier in the thread, and kindly avoid advertising other people's sites, please. -R51 This post has been edited by Rangers51 on 15th March 2005 16:13 -------------------- "you did something I saw as your suicide: you refused to an admin WITHOUT GIVING ANY PROPER REASON. Quote (tifas lover @ 15th March 2005 10:32) Possible spoilers: highlight to view The writer wanted aeris to die because his mother had died during the making of the game and he thought that this effect would be just as effective if a person got close to the character this is true because it was said in an interview Possible spoilers: highlight to view What Sakaguchi said in the interview you speak of was not that Aerith's death was influenced by his mother's passing, but that the game's theme of focusing on life and death was influenced by his mother's passing: "When we were creating Final Fantasy VII, my mother passed away. And ever since then I've been thinking about the theme, Life. Life exists in many things. And I was curious about what would happen if I attempted to analyze life in a mathematical and logical way." That's not necessarily indicative of Aerith's death being his idea or for that reason. Nomura -- as is often credited as having come up with the idea -- may truly have -- and I would say likely did, as he's the only one to have ever been directly quoted as doing so -- put forth the idea with it being accepted because of a focus on a theme of life and death. Refer to Luthien Rogue's Post earlier in this Thread. Nice Squall of Seed, (you always add good feed back!)
Possible spoilers: highlight to view I have an entire theory on the actual death of aeris for the game, but i wont say it BUT I think it made the story a lot more realistic Possible spoilers: highlight to view going through to save the world, someone is gonna die, why it had to be Aeris, i dont know! But I guess because she was so special in her abilities and stuff, she had to and was more eligible. So sad. I love Aeris! ![]() I tried to think of how I'd change it...but its a toughie, the whole game would've been different! I guess when Cloud arrives at the altar, Possible spoilers: highlight to view he could try to kill her (like he does) but she would instead get up and throw her arms around him, like shes not afraid (after he does the whole shake my head *im not going to do it thing*) Then have Jenova try and attack (gotta have the drama) do the figth and then afterwards you could have some confrontation of Cloud and Sephiroth, maybe a battle that appears to knock him out or something, and Aeris retaliates with some sort of magic power, causing sephiroth to realize her power and back away. Then Cloud wakes up disc 3 and aeris is with you! YEAH!!! ok enough outta me!! This post has been edited by trideegurl2 on 15th March 2005 17:09 -------------------- ...That's General Leo..
