Now, really, I defy anyone to name another game with as many good music tracks as this game. I think that it tops even the brilliant Goldeneye. Picking out your favourite is like choosing your favourite son...

Right from the first "gong" that the opening track provides, you get the feeling that you're in for a musical treat. There are so many good tracks done in a variety of styles, ranging from the classical such as the operas and Spinach Rag, to the weird yet wonderful, like Devil's Lab (is this supposed to be a rap song?).

Then we have the songs that get your blood flowing, like Metamorphosis (the obligatory disaster theme), Floating Continent, Atma Weapon (don't you just hate beating that last statue...music's over!), and there are touching, delicate songs, like Relm's Theme (at least until the bagpipes stomp all over that one), and Forever Rachel. And of course we have the tribute to FF's tradition with Prelude and a touch of Prologue at the end.

When I'm playing the game, nothing makes me enjoy a boss fight more than the Atma Weapon music (now how did poor 'ol regular Atma get stuck with the lesser Boss Theme?...I wonder if a patch could take care of that). So in-game, this track gets my vote.

Listening to the tracks on their own, Forever Rachel is easily my favourite. It's so sad, yet so heroic and full of hope. I'm always amazed how much work went into this song when it only shows up once or twice in the game!

I don't think I've responded to this topic, but if I have my opinions change weekly, anyway.

Terra's theme takes priority 'cause it's played so often in the game. Not just in its more complete incarnations (Awakening, WoB map, etc.), but also in other songs where the first five notes - played in order - are "hidden" somewhere in the melody. It's kinda entertaining just to listen for 'em. Also, that song's freakin' sweet, and I only reserve that rather unladylike phrase for REALLY special things. (Pffft...like I ever actually do or say anything ladylike...)

Other character themes that stand out:

- Kefka's theme
- Shadow's theme
- Locke's theme
- Gau's theme
- I can stop anytime, really!
- Celes' theme (which, by extension, would include Aria Di Mezzo Carattere since her theme's based off it)
- Mog's theme (I just like the moogle theme in general)
- I'll just keep it short-but-not-really and say all the character themes are awesome.

As for battle themes:

- Dancing Mad (!!!)
- The Fierce Battle (aka, "Atma Weapon's theme")
- The Decisive Battle

I even really like the theme for random battles, but like any random battle theme, it gets old quickly after starting a new game.

And, just in general:

- The entirety of the opera (Overture, Aria Di Mezzo Carattere, The Wedding, and Grand Finale?)
- Searching for Friends (aka, WoR theme after getting the Falcon)
- Blackjack
- Forever Rachel (I like how it's a somber remix of Locke's theme)
- Troops March On/Vector theme (it's eeeevil...)
- Epitaph (like with Forever Rachel, it's a kinda somber version of Setzer's theme)
- Devil's Lab
- Wild West/Veldt theme
- Metamorphosis

Believe it or not, I could go on. And on, and on, and on. But I think I know when it's a good time to shut up. tongue.gif

Though I am a big fan of Gau's theme, Umaro's theme and the Veldt music, my favourite would have to be 'Serpent Trench.' I love it musically, but it fit the are so well, too.

I liked the boss battle song... The battle song was ok too, but it seems like its been used too many times. ;x

EDIT: Oh, my other fav is that cool song when you meet Gau. And everytime you land your airship on the Veldt..

My favorite music is the music and the begining and the final boss battle music. I also enjoyed the opera house music and the air ship music as well. But the alltime best music in FF VI is the ending music well the party is escaping from Keffka's tower. smile.gif

"searching friends" is definitely way up there for me, along with the Phantom Forest theme.
Like some of you, I've been trying to play some of these on the piano too... but I haven't played the piano in yeaaaaaars, and I learned it when I was some sort of one-digit-year-old kid so I, ehm, for the most part sorta forgot how to play. Woops.

My favorite though is the ending theme.
Where Shadow's theme comes up in the ending theme is my favorite part within it biggrin.gif

Awakening is one of my favorites because the beginning has this very 1940's, damsel-in-distress sound. Like a detective movie.

Forever Rachel, Relm's theme, Veldt song, Owzer's house theme, Locke's theme, Cyan's theme, and the Phantom Train theme.

Final battle. The music for each of the 3 Tiers + Kefka = "Dancing Mad".

The Ending Theme is a wonderfully put together version of all the character themes, and some sound better there than in their full glory (Shadow's in particular.) Other favorites are the Opening Theme (including the version of Terra's theme that plays during the magitek armor marching scene and credits).

I love all the character themes except for Strago's and the Brothers' Figaro, but my favorites are Relm, Gau and Setzer (ironically the three characters I never use...)

Other good ones are the Epilogue and the third (?) part of the Opera (when you fight Ultros)

FFVI has the best music in the Final Fantasy series, IMO. My favorite songs are:
The Opening Theme
Terra's Theme (WoB Overworld theme)
Awakening (Terra's other theme)
Kefka's Theme
Shadow's Theme
The Fierce Battle (Atma Weapon and the Three Statues battle theme)
Metamorphosis
Catastrophe
Dancing Mad
and the Ending Theme.

Celes' theme is one of my alltime favorites, in all of its incarnations, but it is tied with Cyan's theme. In a way, I think both compliment each other.

Terra, Shadow, Gau, and Edgar/Sabin all have good themes as well. (Most of which at one time I could play on Tenor Sax)

I'd have to say the best song (and one of my all-time favorite videogame songs period) is Terra's theme and its many variations. The Grande Finale version is AWESOME, but I think the Piano Collections one is even better. They're like exact opposites, the Grande Finale version symbolizes her courage and heroicness (is that a word?), while the Piano Collections one expresses her loneliness and mysteriousness.

Other awesome ones would be Locke, Rachel, Relm, and Celes's theme (there's like... 3 variations that I can think of).

Oh, and Gau's theme. I always liked it, but the Grande Finale version is just AMAZING! So is that version of "Mystery Train." It's REALLY chaotic and awesome.

And as everyone else has said, Dancing Mad (tiers 3 and 4 mostly) and the Ending Theme are also uber-l337.

FFVI has some of the best songs in the series. It's my favorite FF soundtrack, hands down. There is a lot of diversity to each of the tracks, as oppossed to a soundtrack like FFVII's, where a lot of the tracks play off of the main theme. Each character has a unique soundtrack that comes up in the appropriate setting, and the other tracks match their environments perfectly.

"The Phantom Forest" is one of my all time favorite Uematsu tracks. Very haunting. I love the chanting in the beginning, and the acoustic guitar that leads perfectly into strings and what sounds like a flute (sometimes it's hard to tell...is there a place to find Uematsu instrumentation?).

"Relm's Theme" is another favorite of mine. It does a great job of conveying the sweeter, inner artistic side of Relm, as opposed to the foul-mouthed brat. Plus, synth bagpipes--now that's an original touch.

"The Awakening" (which should really be Terra's theme since it's always played when she's around) is another good one. The clarinet (?) makes for a great opening, and I like "Terra's Theme" played out on the piano while the strings and what sounds like a harp provide accompaniment in the background.

Of course, I can't forget "Dancing Mad." I think that needs very little commentary from me to convince others of its greatness.

Some others that I like:

Prelude
The Mines of Narshe
Shadow
Cyan
The Empire Gestahl
The Day After
Searching for Friends

Off Topic: I believe its heroicism. (Which I probably slaughtered that word's spelling...)

On Topic.

Dancing Mad is good, but I must say, when NU had the Black Mages redo it? Good stuff right there.

My favorite theme is the updated prelude because of the new parts that it plays! It is my favorite prelude in all of the final fantasies! I like it better than all of the ones in the past because of the added parts, and ones like FF7 and FF10 all sound too technological!

I agree wholeheartedly. Final Fantasy VI has some of the most incredible and inspiring (being a musician) music of any game I have yet to play.

From each character's theme song to the battle music such as Atma or a normal boss battle, it's all really very great.

So many different instruments used also, for being an older game now. It's amazing.

My favorite piece would have to be "The Unforgiven" track, which I consider Sabin's theme song. Some may know it; when you
