Of course this will be biased in favor of FFVI since this is an FFVI forum, but let's see how the community here generally accepts the game. Are there a bunch of fanatics around or just a few?
However "fanatic" tends to be a bad label which is often interpreted to extreme measures, so scratch that. ![]() What's your overall impression of FFVI? -------------------- FFXI (Siren server) Tauu the Windurstian Tarutaru! White Mage & Paladin |

I went with Choice 7. I had alot of hype over it at one point, and In a way it'll always have a place in my heart, but things died down. I got alot of mt FF6 passion out over these forums. I Still love the game and its one of my favorites, but I also look forward to newer and better things.

I choose choice number one. This game makes me feel like "$@#)((& $(-)!+ *@" as Barret would say.
Just kidding. Seriously though, I selected choice number six. I love this game but it most certainly isn't anything more then just one of my better SNES games. Still, that's a high honor when you consider my favorite system is the SNES and I have over 50 games for that system alone. I won't go into details considering that most people here, already know this game. Still, suffice it to say, this game will always be one of my favorites list or another. It's among the best games ever created, and ranks as one of the top two RPGs ever created (the other being Chrono Trigger).

I'd have to say that it's one of my favorite, just because of the story and the characters.

This game is the pinnacle of RPG gaming, in my opinion.
It is not the game that sparked my love of FF, but the game that secured the fact that the entire FF series is the best thing to happen to me since that time I got a spring stuck up my nose. My favourite FF changes almost as much as my avatar here. First it was VII, then IV, then V, but after playing through this game completely for the first time a few months back, I realized no game, FF or not, can match it. Final Fantasy VI - it's like sex, only I'm having it. |

Oooohhh I chose 9 but in a past tense...it was a significant part of my life, so heres what has changed...
If I had been asked this about 4 years ago i would have said it was the best game ever and that it would never be surpassed, I even had my PAL SNES adjusted so I could play it at 60hz to run the game properly.....and I tried like mad to get the PS version of the game after my battery backup died on my SNES cart. I was one of the lucky few that had the chance to play it first time round in Britain.. Also, because it never had an offical release over here it retained some mystique and it almost had an 'underground' monicker because not many people knew of its existence at the time. When I first went on the internet, I looked up websites which covered FFVI and my passion was renewed. But that passion has faded as I have got older, and my life has changed completely since the heady days of 1994... On merit, and going by what hardware was available at the time, FFVI was an exciting & beautiful game, easy to play and the story had just enough balance of adventure, love and drama to make it the classic it is. But as technology progresses and tastes change Im finding it harder and harder to go back to now. Although I still try and keep my interest alive by going on this darn forum from time to time! (Big shout out to R51 for that ![]() I still regard it as the finest rpg ive ever played and a true legend of its time, and I will always enjoy discussing the game, I mean, how many games released nowadays will have so many websites and forums dedicated to it 10 years after it was released? Oh, and they will never make a FF game that will surpass it, ever. Square lost the plot with FFVIII and never got it back again, its now just a cliche ridden franchise that should have been stopped a long time ago...maybe its because of this my passion has drained ![]() Edit: Also thanks to i90east for another intelligent topic which most people can get involved in for a change! Had to pick 6.
Edit: Whoops, forgot to put my reasoning. I basically nowadays compare every RPG to this game. I think "if a game on the SNES is more fun that this" I wasted my money. FFVI will always have something that other games just don't have. There just aren't any games that can compare to the amount of fun you can get out of this game. I have replayed it numerous times, each time trying something new. Most of my other games I dread the idea of having to restart them again. I chose #9. The reason is because I have the game sitting on top of a shelf, putting it in plain view every time I enter that room. So whenever I walk by, there it is, smiling and winking at me. That always puts me in the mood to play video games, and I usually end up doing so when I should be doing more important things. Like going to work. It's the only game that does that, and dammit, it's annoying. But it also makes me feel like a giddy middle school girl who was just invited to one of those naughty "unsupervised" parties, and then I realize I'm thinking such things in regards to a freakin' video game and feel like an idiot...
I'd say that's all pretty significant, so I'll just sum it up by agreeing with Mimic on FFVI's orgasmic appeal. -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. i voted 9 cause FF6 really impacted my life alot, its my favorite game of all time after all. This was the first of the final fantasys i ever got to play and it also brought back memories of watching my cousin play it when i was little. I loved the story line and the the charector back ground, it made the game so much more fun learning about the charectors. I use to pretend i was part of the game and interacted with the charectors, this game also was one of the reason i wanted lots of games to tons of story line behind them cause to me this game has one of the best stories you can get with a game. I didnt like kefka at all and couldnt wait to bring a world of hurt to him. I to this day cant be around some one who laughs like kefka that laugh huants me lol.

Wow, I feel better now that I know 9 is the most popular option so far. I felt like such a geek picking that one!
I'd say it's significant because it came along at a time when I needed it most. I first played it in 7th grade when I desperately needed something to take my mind off of reality. It was my first time going to a regular school, so I was bored and confused as well as surrounded by people who acted entirely different from me. I still wanted to engage in imaginative play and all they could think about was tv and sports! They had no idea where I was coming from. Around the same time my brothers and old friends also outgrew playing imaginatively so I felt completely alone. Final Fantasy games had to fill in for what other people used to do with me: playing pretend. Even if video games were a pretty pathetic replacement for live action role playing and the relationships that came from it, they were what I needed. Final Fantasy 6 was the most important one because the story and characters were so easy for me to relate to as well as a good escape from reality after every endlessly boring day of school. I really related well to Terra because she was different like me. The scene where Locke and Edgar first sw her use magic was like the first time I drew a picture in middle school and everyone flipped out because so far no one in the class had drawn that well. There were a lot of other parallels between me and the game too. IMO, Terra is the best female lead I've seen in the fantasy genre and is also my favorite lead character in the FF series. FF6 has been a major influence on the stories I write-- writing was another way I filled the gap after everything changed. It's played a somewhat significant role in the past 6 years, but especially when I first played it. It's my favorite game of all time. |

FF6 is one of the 3 best RPG/Strategy games. I have played hundreds of games and it has stood the test of time.
Not in any particular order, but they have occupied my top 3 spots for over 10 years. Master of Magic FF6 Warlords 3 Darklords Rising I still play these games regularly. They are the only 3 games which have held my attention over and over and over again. Why are they great? Well, they each have quite a bit of MAGIC (spells), the STRATEGY aspect is important and most important of all, REPLAY VALUE is very high because there are multiple successful strategies which are fun to employ!!! FF6 is one of the best games ever because of the accumulation aspect of levels, equipment, stats, and powers. And each of these things are very interesting in themselves. Minerva armor, Paladin Shield, Cats Hood, Offering, Mantra, Quadra Slice, Quasar, all good stuff. COLLECTABILITY is a very important aspect for any RPG / Fantasy / Strategy game. |

Without question, one of the greatest games ever created. Even by today's standards it blows me away.
The storyline progresses from a simple "stop the Empire" plot into a complicated adventure covering so many different aspects of life and death: Cyan losing his family, Shadow escaping his past, Locke trying to revive a lost love. This last play through, Relm partically struck a chord with me...this poor girl, who has never known either of her parents, only a grandfather. I think of my friends who have had parents walk out on them, and suddenly the sullen character comes to life. And her music...wow. All of the music just fits so perfectly. The music, stoyline, and characters were what originally forced me to fall in love with the game back in 1994. It was, without question, the most advanced video game of its time. People who refer to RPGs as "interactive movies," well...this is where that really began. Arguably FFIV, but for me, this game took it to an entirely new level. Riona, I could not agree more with you that the game came into my life at the perfect moment. I was at that same stage of adolescene, and this game was a much needed remedy to everything around me that I didn't agree with. In my recent life I have been going through some challenging times, and part of the reason I started playing FFVI was to recapture that feeling of escape and imagination. Yet I'm also starting to appreciate an entirely new aspect of the game: the gameplay design. After Djibriel pointed out the mathematical impossibility of me beating Vargas, I had a new found appreciation for the way the number systems and stats worked. Terri Senshi's algorithim FAQ at Gamefaqs is a great place to learn about this. It has added an entirely new dimension to the game that I previously neglected. There are so many different levels to this game that contribute to its greatness. It's part of the reason I believe my holy trinity of FFs (IV, VI, VII) will never be surpassed by another gaming series. So many people put so much love into these games. This is my favorite game ever. I don't know what it is about it that makes it better than my other great games, like other FF's, Chrono Trigger, Persona, Star Ocean 2, etc. I just know that FF6 came to me at a point in my life where everything else sucked (1995, I was 14, need I say more?) I could come home and just disappear into the whole FF6 world. I just got into every character so deeply. I loved all the little nuances, tiny secrets, big secrets, just everything.
I still pick up the game and replay it about once a year, and all the old magic comes right back. It's just a good, comfortable game. Not too hard to play, but not too easy, just fun and engaging. -------------------- Kupo! |

It's in my personal top 5 RPGs, below Chrono Trigger and Skies of Arcadia and on par with Final Fantasy Tactics.
EDIT: Oh, I said choice 7, only because many years ago it and Chrono Trigger were the only RPGs I liked at all (keep in mind that Zelda is not an RPG ![]() This post has been edited by laszlow on 3rd February 2005 16:25 -------------------- |

I love this game! Its the best one out there! I have 1,2,5,6,10, and I'm getting 11 soon. It may be in 2-D, but who cares? The story line is awesome, the music is great, and the characters are so well developed, you feel as if you know them. I don't generally obsess about games, but FF6 is definitly the exception! Y'know, it would be really cool if they made FF6 into one of the 3-D games, like 7 and up, I would be the first one to buy it!

I love FFVI with a passion. I'm playing it the first time all the way through, at Phoenix Cave right now. I actually started a game earlier on PS1, I got to the Magitek Factory, but I lost my memory card. So I bought the cart and sat down for a month and loved this game to death.
I've decided that I have five favorite FFs that are all very close: IV VI VII IX X But out of all of them, VI, VII and IX edge out IV and X by a bit. And I can't really choose between those three. -------------------- If something were to happen to me, all the world's women would grieve! - Edgar Nothing beats the music of thousands of voices screaming in unison! - Kefka Lover of all FFs, especially IV, VI, VII, IX, and X. Number 6. Final Fantasy 6 is easily one of the best games ever made. It just has so much...class. The storyline is superb, the gameplay is magnificent, and the graphics are beautiful, and the music...dear God the music...wonderful. The entire style of the game is beyond comparison. One of my favorite games ever, right next to the shelf with Xenogears and Breath of Fire III.

I think it's a great game and has its moments. However, in the end, I thought it was a boring game compared to some of the other games in the series. I don't want to smack the game too hard considering where I'm posting this, but the story was lacking in my opinion. Especially in the dark world, I felt like I was listening to a bunch of short stories that could have been really cool in strung together right... but in my opinion, they just weren't. Sure, the final boss fight was ingenious how it implemented all the characters (along with the entire final dungeon), but using characters you don't care for much to flip a few switches and whatnot doesn't string it all together in my opinion.
FF6 did a good job realizing its characters and telling us about them, their motives, and their backgrounds, but it didn't really do anything with it. The difference between FF4 and FF6 was that FF4 actually killed off a few character that we cared for. I've always thought that killing a major character or two would have done FF6 some good. In fact, a LOT of good. It's almost like Square got soft after FF4... not sure. Sorry if I offended anyone, but I do think my points are valid, and I tried not to be bias... ![]() |
