My longest song is The Allman Brothers, "Whipping Post" Live at Fillmore East. For any rock fan, this 23 minute song... you've just got to hear it. I'm sure that's the longest one I have. Of course, every song on that record is long (the second longest on there is 19 minutes). Oh, and I have FFVI DM and the ending theme.

Heh, this was fun to explore. I went into iTunes and sorted by time.
I knew the top result would be "+", an arranged track from the Seiken Densetsu series, mainly 2 and 3. My copy is 54 minutes long, but it is cut off at the end and I'm pretty sure it's actually around 70. It's really relaxing and nice to have on in the background while working. I also have "The World of Mother" which is from the lyrical Mother soundtrack (though this particular song doesn't have lyrics). It's 16 minutes long and is a medley - similar to "+" - of the series. I think it's actually supposed to just be from Mother 1, but the series reuses themes so it seems like it's from multiple games. A couple tracks from the soundtrack of The Empire Strikes Back are in there, as are a couple tracks from Wild ARMs 2 and some comedy tracks. Other highlights are Telegraph Road by Dire Straits (incredible song), The Black Mages' version of Dancing Mad, and "Notes / Prima Donna" from The Phantom of the Opera. freeeeeee biiiiiiiird -------------------- Hey, put the cellphone down for a while In the night there is something wild Can you hear it breathing? I have a few long ones, but they're mostly all classical stuff, which isn't quite so unusual. Copland's Appalachian Spring is a great one, as is Whitacre's When David Heard. There's a couple other more obscure ones up there too.

The whole wedding/opera scene from FFVI. The arrangement I have is about 20 minutes, but I can still listen to the whole thing!
Somewhere, I have Stairway to Heaven. That's 12 minutes, I think? And then next is Paradise by the Dashboard Light at 8:14 -------------------- You're telling me that there's no hope. I'm telling you you're wrong. |

I believe I have a music C.D. with the full length version of Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick somewhere, but I'm not sure where... It's an actual 45 minute song. Wish I could remember the lyrics from one portion to the next to make sense of it but yeah, I have a hard enough time remembering the words to the average 2-5 minute fare....

My longest are mainly prog rock tracks, but i think the top hitters are:
New Found Glory - The Story So Far - 26:36 Yes - many tracks ranging from about 15:00 up to the longest at 23:35 Klaxons - Four Horsemen of 2012 - 19:41 (but that's because it has lots of silence in it) Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond - 17:31 Pink Floyd - Echoes - 16:29 Snow Patrol - The Lightning Strike [pt 1-3] - 16:18 Dire Straits - Telegraph Road - 14:18 Iron Maiden - Rime of the Ancient Mariner - 13:39 Quote (Tonepoet) I believe I have a music C.D. with the full length version of Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick somewhere, but I'm not sure where... It's an actual 45 minute song. I think that 45 minute Tull track will take some serious beating! -------------------- We apologise for the inconvenience |

I have 12 songs that are over ten minutes long, but I listen to a lot of blues, so a lot of it is like Jimi Hendrix's Hear My Train A' Comin' (12:09) and Stevie Ray Vaughan's version of Voodo Child (11:53). I've also got CCR's version of Heard it Through the Grapevine which is 11:07.
By the way, my two shortest songs are Her Majesty (0:26) off of Abbey Road and Uematsu's Rest in Peace (0:29). -------------------- |

I don't have much classical or vidja-game music on my computer, so my longest is Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd. Second is Bat Outta Hell by Meatloaf (the live version) and then The Camera Eye by Rush. I also have various songs by Renaissance and Nightwish, and they tend to have some pretty long ones.
Btw, the shortest song I have is "Jingle - It Doesn't End Here" from the Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney OST. Go figure. -------------------- Squenix games completed: Final Fantasy: 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, Tactics Advance 2 Chrono Trigger Dragon Quest: 7, 8, 11 Super Mario RPG |

The first conventional non-classical song that is long that I can think of is "Stairway to Heaven", which is about 8 minutes long. Obviously there are longer songs out there than this, but I'm not sure if I have a conventional non-classical song (of genres like pop, rock, rap, country, etc.) that's longer. That said, I can't really check since I don't use a playlist that I can look through; I'd have to look through my folders. Another relatively long song is Ritsuko Okazaki's "Serenade" at 6:10 though that's mostly because it has a long (but very pretty) outtro.
Counting non-conventional songs and classical works, there are far more examples: * Pablo de Sarasate, "Zigeunerweisen": 8:45 * Ralph Vaughan-Williams, Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis: 14:19 * The Black Mages, "Dancing Mad": 12:04 * Denki Groove, "Rainbow": 10:54 * Alexander Goedicke, Concertstück in B minor, Op. 11: 13:48 And this is not counting entire sonatas/concertos/symphonies as single pieces, which they often ought to be considered. Even a short one like the "Spring" concerto from Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" is 9:52; at the top you have things like Beethoven's 9th Symphony, which is over an hour long. If we're counting live releases I have some crap by Phish that goes up to about 56 minutes.
By far the longest thing I have though is a two CD musical collage of a whole bunch of live Dark Stars by the Grateful Dead called Grayfolded. It's like a two hour long Dark Star sundae made of Dark Star... what more could you ask for? -------------------- If you've been mod-o-fied, It's an illusion, and you're in-between. I despise MP3s and don't keep them on my computer but judging from my kickass cassette/vinyl/CD collection I will tell you that without a doubt the longest song in my possession is Venom's "At War with Satan" song, clocking at about 19:57 in length. That's the entire A-side of the LP itself.

Maybe there's some PBR in the fridge for you to sip ironically. I sorted my list, and it seems like most of my longest stuff can break down into three or four categories: 1. Tracks with insane gaps leading into "hidden" tracks at the end, such as on Oasis' album "Heathen Chemistry," Neko Case's album "Middle Cyclone," or Our Lady Peace's album "Spiritual Machines." 2. Live stuff - I have at least ten Dave Matthews Band songs from various official live or bootleg live recordings that clock in at 14 minutes or more, for instance, with a smattering of similar tracks from various Billy Corgan bands and a few other groups like OAR. 3. Post-Rock and Ambient - At least one person has mentioned Explosions in the Sky, and in a similar vein I can add in Godspeed! You Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion, Do Make Say Think, Sigur Ros, and Brian Eno, all of whom often have songs clocking in at ten minutes or more. 4. Jazz - I don't have all that much in my collection, but Miles Davis and Coltrane both show up frequently near the top of my list. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? Does own very much, however. |

Technically my longest single song on iTunes is a 1:14:59 comedy show, but that doesn't really count.
Other than that, top 5 are: Do We Really Need This? (live) - Muse (26:10) Something in the Way - Nirvana (With bonus track (20:35)) 15 Minutes - Telepopmusik (15:39) Alloway Grove - Paolo Nutini (14:13) DARE (DFA Remix) - Gorillaz (12:15) -------------------- Aujourdhui a commence avec toi. |
