I guess my biggest complaint on this game was that mario was mute. (As if we didn't get enough of it in Chrono Trigger....)
I can see why though, I don't really think I could write dialouge for an italian plumber o.o (Primarily cause I can speak italian, so would have no clue on how to write it) -------------------- Link: "What is it?" Mario: "It's coin, what the hell does it look like?" Link: "Well.... What do you do with it?" Mario: "You buy lives with them." Link: ".... Isn't that slavery?" ~Mario/Link crossover comic~ |

Quote I frequently find myself leveling just to live against Culex o.o See, I never fought Culex, so..... Quote the Axem Rangers That's right! I forgot about them. Those guys were pretty hard. I remember the first time I fought them: I beat them when they were all fighting me, but then they hit me with their cannon. I think it was called "Breaker Beam", or something. Mario RPG is definately on my list for great RPGs I've played, yes the Axem Rangers were really tough, but atleast I beat them in under 40 tries, unlike that damn Culex.

I'd like to be able to prepare for him if I ever get the urge to beat the game again. -------------------- ~ Aurora, exhale bloody air! Dark Holy! ~ |

Mario rpg is a classic combo of marioish platform and squaresoft(enix) rpg (thier best styles) however the thing that frustrated me the most and my only real memory of that game (besides culex) was the yoshi mini quest
As for the culex thing Possible spoilers: highlight to view He has 4 elemental crystals that i usuley kill in this order 1. Wind 2. Water. 3 Fire. 4. Earth the reason i kill them in this order is becuase this is the order of easiest to kill. When you fight him dont forget the rock candy ^^ and a little red essence never hurt i beat him at level 25 so you should be about there. I used peach and bowser btw what does his item do? Hey, funny thing:
Last night, my brother just happened to be playing through SMRPG, when I saw that he was just about to beat the game. So, he agreed to let me give Culex a try. His party was Mario, Bowser, Peach, all around level 25 - 27, Mario had the Lazy Shell weapon, and Peach had the Lazy Shell Armor. Well, without walking you through the batle, I'll just tell you that I won! Although, I do understand why he's hard: I tried beating him right before that without the giving Peach lazy shell (for status proection + take 1 damage from just about everything). I went down very, very quickly And by the way, Quote Possible spoilers: highlight to view He has 4 elemental crystals that i usuley kill in this order 1. Wind 2. Water. 3 Fire. 4. Earth the reason i kill them in this order is becuase this is the order of easiest to kill. Thanks for the strategy, but I'm not sure what Rock Candy does, so I don't use them. I usually just throw them away once I get them. Rock candy is an attack item that does very good non-elemental damage to all enemies. My Culex strategy is usually as follows:
Possible spoilers: highlight to view First, have Geno use Geno Flash every turn and Princess use Group Hug whenever necessary (pretty much every turn), while Mario or Princess try and keep the FP syruped up. In his first few turns have Mario use all of your rock candy, then focus Jump attacks or normal attacks on the Wind Crystal (the one with the lowest HP), then Flame attacks on the Ice Crystal (the next lowest HP), then normal attacks on the Fire and Earth Crystals. After you kill the first three crystals, Geno Flash isn't worth it anymore, so have him use normal attacks from then on; You better have Mario's Lazy Shell and Geno's Star Gun equipped if you know what's good for you. Secondly, I usually don't endorse this, but it isn't a bad idea to have Princess equipped with the Lazy Shell armor, even if her healing ability suffers. Normally the Royal Dress is a better choice so that Therapy and Group Hug don't suck, but the barrage from those four Crystals demands that she survive (also, Come Back isn't affected by Magic Power, so as long as she survives and has FP then you're good). Also, who doesn't love the FF IV battle and victory music there? IV is my favorite FF soundtrack, and when I was eleven years old and played SMRPG I got giddy. -------------------- |

It seemed like a fairly fun game. After I got bowser and was at some castle place or something, my computer crashed and I lost almost everything on it. I was too mad to ever try to start playing all over again.

Rock Candy does 200 non-elemental damage to all targetable enemies on scree. I've heard that there's some way to 'time' it so that it does 350 damage instead, but I've never successfully done that, on either emulator or console (I have both formats). Rock Candy therefore becomes useful for those few battles where you're fighting upwards of 3 targets.
It also becomes useful in the Smithy battle, phase 1, if you let the smelter create a ton of shypers (400 HP each). Other than that, though, it's not the most useful item to have, but it's decently useful, since 200 damage is like 2.5-order damage in SMRPG. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. Possible spoilers: highlight to view As soon as the sword appeared right after the opening battle with Bowser (amidst some oddly freaky music), I knew this game was going to be different. I stopped playing and just laughed as hard as my fourteen-year old self was capable at Tadpole Pond, when Frogfucius was telling Mallow the truth about what he was. The first return to Mushroom Kingdom made it very clear that this wasn't your ordinary "defeat Bowser, save the Princess, and restore peace" game as Mack and his Shysters bounced into the kingdom. The Geno/Forest Maze section of the game was so cool!! The way Geno is introduced into the party is so awesome ... you don't even get so much of a chance to say hello, and you are whisked into battle with Bowyer. The whole Booster section was entertaining, particularly the part when Mario and Co. have to fight the wedding cake. That was ... weird. Monstro Town was awesome. "Triplets, come say hi to Uncle Bowser!" And then the three little Goombas jump up on the counter. "Hi, Uncle Bowser!" I had to laugh when I saw what they were selling ... Goomba had the privilege of selling the big stuff to Bowser, but he let the triplets sell the mushrooms! I always buy a few just to humor the triplets. I've heard they do something different, but I haven't figured out what yet. Seeing all the typical Mario monsters in Monstro Town was quite refreshing. After all that work to get through the Barrel Volcano and defeat the Czar Dragon, I was so mad when the Axem Rangers stole the star. They were really a challenge, too! My first battle with them was long before I knew about the Lazy Shell, so I used a Crystalline from the frog man in Seaside Town to boost my party's defense. The door game in Bowser's Keep was tough. 'Nuff said. Fighting Exor: After defeating Boomer (one of my favorite bosses), when Chandeli-Ho was taking Mario and Co. to the top of the castle, I thought, "This is it! Time to face off with Smithy!" Not quite, I guess. What's more, as I fought the sword, I still thought it was Smithy. Anyway ... the 9999 Geno Whirl trick can be used to defeat Exor, but I really like the battle, so I usually don't resort to this. The first thing I do is have Princess use Mute on the Neosquid, because its special attacks are pretty lethal. Then I take out one of the eyes (the left, usually) and go to town on Exor! I give Super Mario RPG a 10 out of 10. It's an awesome game. -------------------- "I will create a monument to nonexistence!!" "The end comes ... beyond chaos." ~ Kefka, Final Fantasy VI |

When I was playing Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga (VERY recommended, lots of fun), I noticed two things concerning everybody's favorite doll-possessed-by-a-star-thingy. First of all, in the arcade minigame (the minigames rule in this game), Geno is unmistakably the guy that teaches you the rules/hands out the prize, which is pretty cool. Second of all, in the game's credits, the last lines are to the effect: "Mario and Luigi and a bunch of other characters are property of Nintento, however the character Geno is property of Square-Enix." Keep in mind that Square-Enix had no part of Superstar Saga. So, if we want a true sequel, including the original characters from SMRPG (ie Mallow and Geno), then there HAS to be a Squenix-Nintendo collaboration; Geno and Mallow and a ton of other original game elements are Squenix, Mario and Bowser and a ton of other Mario game elements are Nintendo. This upsets me slightly, because in the back of my mind I'd been hoping to see a direct sequel to this game, even if it was Nintendo-only, but now it is even less likely to happen, a re-release also questionable.

Yes, SMBRPG is very awesome. Another game I used to play nonstop as a child. I only beat Culex once though...and I could never unlock the dang casino thing. I think I had to get an item at a certain point or something...meh. I did get the Lazy Shell, so at least there's that.

I thought it was actually quite a good game. I remember hanging out with a friend in high school, trying to beat Culex in his parents' basement. That was cool.
Then I killed him. Culex I mean, not my friend. And got nothing more than a lousy t-shirt saying "I beat Culex and all's I got was this lousy t-shirt!" Also tried to do that 100 jumps thing. I'm under the impression that it's impossible, and that people who claim to having done it are just under the influence of severe mental trauma from playing the game too much. But then again, that was back in early high-school. Probably a piece of cake now... You forget the nifty Quartz Charm he coughed up... I don't remember what it did though.
I loved playing SMRPG, actually it was the first Role Play game I had played (I was a late bloomer, lol). So when I did beat Culex and the FF Victory music rolled around I didn't 'get it.' or the connection. I was just shocked to see how huge and out of place he was in that battle. -------------------- Final Flash - Not updated since 2004, but still more music than a giant purple octopus can hold! |

I voted Excellent and I give SMRPG a 9.8/10 because Squaresoft did something different to get some good ideas, but still it's not the best, in my opinion. I find I would rather play FFVI, but a very good game to play for Mario fans!

It's hard to imagine that you could make an RPG out of the Mario series, but Nintendo and Square pulled it off remarkably, integrating all of my favorite characters and creating some new characters that are plausible in Mario's world.
The only reason that I voted "good" instead of "excellent" was the game's brevity and its disappointingly easy difficulty level. -------------------- The world before the fall... Delightful is the light of dawn... Noble is the heart of man... |

Super MaRPGio is one of my favorite games. It was a different kind of RPG, kind of like Earthbound was different (but SMRPG is different from that, too). It was actually an interesting challenge, as many bosses took me a long time to beat. The only problem was no Luigi. -CSM

Three things:
1. the 100 jumo thing IS possible, but if the enemy isn't dead, pause the game and give your thumb a break. 2. I was sure Luigi made anappearance at some point... guess not. 3. I give this game a excellent rating. I love the characters, mostly Geno since you get to have a doll who shoots stuff at your enimies.Stars! I never fought Culex, but my brother did and it took him a couple tries.
Only a few boss battles were hard, The rangers, The sword *i was low on healing potions* and im stuck on Smithy. Quote (Dragon King @ 17th July 2006 11:56) Just throwing this out there but where/how do you get the lazy shell? Go to Rose Town and give the gardener "Seed" and "Fertilizer." Climb the vine that grows to obtain Mario's best weapon and armor. To get the Seed, return to the place in Bean Valley where you defeated Megasmilex. Read the note that floated down, and take the seed. To get the Fertilizer, you must first defeat Valentina. Go to the far east side of Nimbus Land (the town), and there is a place where you can walk out onto thin air. (Leave the house where you found the Signal Ring, and keep walking straight.) A Shy Guy is at the end of this invisible path. Talk to it to get the Fertilizer. -------------------- The world before the fall... Delightful is the light of dawn... Noble is the heart of man... |

I actually just started playing this game a few weeks ago on an emulator, and I forgot how truly entertaining it was. Once I got Bowser, though, the game was basically over. I gave him the Super Suit that I won from 100 Super Jumps (and a lot of save states), and he took hardly any damage at all. Not only that, but he dealt absurd amounts of damage. I had my Geno Boost'd Bowser doing like 500 damage per swing. He's pretty nasty. I usually use Lazy Shell'd Peach instead of Geno, though, just for the Group Hug (even though it sucks with that armor equipped, as many others in this thread said already).
Any boss in this game, besides the ones that you need to fight with only a certain character (e.g. That shark guy in the sunken ship), or ones where you need multiple party members (e.g. that cake...need to extinguish the flames) can be killed using Super Suit'd Bowser. He's just too powerful. Kinda takes the fun away from it. Culex is tough and the FFIV tribute was excellent. Great soundtrack and lots of amusing side quests. This is among my favorite RPGs, simply because Bowser is playable, it is entertaining, it has good music, and is fairly challenging until you make uber-Bowser. I would enjoy a sequel, too, but I suppose that the Paper Mario series is as close as we are going to get. Speaking of which, I heard that the next PM game might feature Bowser as a playable character? That would make my life complete. -------------------- Is PJ |
