Hello,
Just wanted to introduce myself a bit. I'm a first time poster. Been a Final Fantasy fan since 91 though. Recently I was replaying Final Fantasy VI, and when I got to Vargas I decided to try something new: not using pummell. To my surprise, after a few rounds of fighting him with just "attack," he died. However, he didn't give his speech and peel away like he normally does. Instead, it was the traditional boss death, with the two flashes of light followed by disintegration. Later on, when you fight Ultros for the third time, I tried to do the same thing. Instead of using "Sketch" with Relm I just kept pounding him with attacks. Eventually, poof, he disappeared just like a regular enemy. I don't think this makes any major difference, but it's just an interesting variation to the game. It's amazing that after 10 years of playing this game I still found something new. Sorry if this has been posted before. I tried to do a search beforehand. |

I've tried to beat both fights that way and usualy what happens for me is that I end up fighting them for looong periods of time then give in to the games will. I'm a little curious as to how you did this so here are some questions:
1. What level were you? 2. What Version did you use, SNES, Playstation, Ect? 3. How long were you fighting Vargas beforehand? 4. How long did you have to fight Ultross? By the way, welcome to the Caves of Narshe. I hope you like it here as much as I do. -------------------- |

That can happen. They don't have unlimited HP so they're supposed to die after a while. Using those two skills merely triggers a script that shows dialog and kills them.
No other actions result from this other than the fight taking longer to complete. ![]() -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Ignoring Sketch at the Ultros battle is a choice you can make, but Condemned *will* kill Sabin before he can kill Vargas without Pummel. You must've leveled through the roof to have this happening.
And that's probably above 70. Sabin will appear if Vargas reaches 10880 HP. You can't deal that much damage in under a minute if you're not *really* overleveling. -------------------- |

Hey Tonepoet. Thaks for the welcome.
I can't claim to have beaten Vargas now, in light of what Djibriel just told me. As for Ultros, the key was using Fire 2 with Terra. Ultros would retaliate with Fire 3, but then I'd just cure or revive her. I had everyone else attack, including a very weak Relm who didn't do much damage. I'm just amazed by the replay value of this game, because I also found a cut scene I'd never seen before. When I was just Locke and Terra (before boarding the boat from Alrbook to Thamasa) I traveled back to the downed airship. In the engine room, Cid and Setzer start arguing about how to fix the ship. After, Setzer kicks him out, he reminisces over his relationship with Daryl. I'm sure other people have stumbled across this before, but it was cool for me because it was entirely new. Ahhh, the Engineer's cut scene...
![]() I tried just using Aurobolt on Vargas once, but I gave up after about the 984543th time that he didn't die. :-/ -------------------- ~Status Report~ * Completed... Dragon's Head * Completed... ^ So did I.
![]() With Ultros that third time 'round without sketching, he can get stupid hard if you're waaaay underleveled with all those Lode Stones he drops on you. That was so long ago that I can't remember if I beat him or gave in to Relm's portraitphilia. Another decent challenge is defeating Whelk's shell instead of his head. It's especially frustrating if you only have Vicks/Biggs or Wedge left (and thus no TekMissiles) due to the others being fried with a multi-targeted Mega Volt. Yup, quite a sad battle that was... -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. If anything simply cannot go wrong, it will anyway. Djibriel,
There's no way I was at level 70 when I fought him. I would estimate I was in the high teens or low twenties. I just looked up Vargas' stats in a FAQ and it said he has 11,600 HP when you fight him. That certainly holds up with what you said about him having 10,800 when Sabin shows up. I don't know anything about the math of the game, but I'm going to assume you do because of the accuracy of your post and your website. So, if what you said about having to be on level 70 is correct, then I was wrong. After reading the post about Whelk's Shell, I'm starting to think that I confused it with Vargas. It was awhile back when I fought one of them and they disintegrated. I thought I had a distinct memory of me Aurabolting Vargas to death, but I suppose I was wrong. Anyway, when I picked the game up recently and beat Ultros, I grouped the two fights together in one post for conveience sake. Now that attempt at a more succint post has totally tarnished my topic. Bah! Anyway, thanks for confirming I beat Ultros. It's nice to know I didn't imagine that, as it was only a few weeks ago. This post has been edited by KefkaLives on 9th January 2005 08:15 |

I've only beaten Ultros via sketch on my first playthrough. On my last playthrough, I killed the Presenter's shell, thuogh. I'm surprised I did it, considering I was less than level 30 (Sabin hadn't even learned "Wind Slash" at that point).

The part about Ultros was true.
When i got there, i decided to kill ultros without sketch. It took a little while. From the way you guys say it, I thought it would be hard, but in fact it was so easy. By the way im not bragging, im just sharing an experience -------------------- The black wind howls again... Say, can you hear that? It's the sound of the Reaper... - Magus |

I in fact killed Whelk's shell once, and after all that effort, all I got was a measly Ether or something like that. It's not worth it, unless you use Terra's magic like so SO much that you'd want to have an extra Ether on hand. It took a good long time (at least 15 minutes, with turbo), but still, I can claim I beat it.
Although it was completely useless. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. You can find me on the Fediverse! I use Mastodon, where I am @[email protected] ( https://sakurajima.moe/@glennmagusharvey ) |
