This may or may not be a disguisted commercial to show off with the Rage Guide. If you really doubt the use of Gau, I suggest to take a look at it.

Outside of that, though, the only reason you'd want to use him is either out of personal favoritism (...admit it, people) or to add variety and new strategies. Or because you feel things like Genji Glove + Offering or Ultima are a little too cheap. wink.gif

Yes, to all three. smile.gif
Basically, I'm thrifty. I don't want to use any MP, and I don't want to use any items. Enter Gau. Easy Magic for free. Sometimes I use him offensively, sometimes defensively. Either way, I usually find him to be useful. smile.gif

I know this is a *little* old but I've come to like Gau.

I've never used him before, really. I didn't develop my rages much at all. My first playthrough ever I got Marshall like about 3 rages in and ever since then I've mostly looked for him, Wind Slash was great throughout WoB.

I didn't realize that there were BETTER rages than Marshall.

I used to just have Gau cast magic if I used him, or picked some random rage in fights to level him up.

But I've come to appreciate him a lot, especially in the WoB. Aquiform does Aqua Rake, that can basically take out ANY monster in the Magitek Factory and save casters MP for healing instead of Thundara.

merit award is gone from FFVIA.

I think the problem isn't with Gau, it's that the game made it too easy to level up in WoR, and that people don't like to take risks. I don't like leveling up. I just got the Blackjack, my characters average level 20.

I found the Rage Guide randomly, which changed my ways. :-)

Rage hunting can almost replace leveling up... you get spells when you go in the veldt, and it's more fun... you see EVERY monster you have fought, not just the 3 or 4 that are in the zone you are facing...

I have some mixed feelings about Gau. He IS quite entertaining as a character, he has his moments, like when you meet his father, when he shows some real emotions. I agree with all that.

But, seriously, his rages are a waste of time.

When you walk around in the Veldt and you want him to leap, other characters get no experience for the monsters you are fighting while leaping. You also get no EXP when he comes back. The coming back to party sequence is long and annoying "I'm Gau, I'm your friend. Let's travel together" - like if I didn't know that before... Also, he doesn't learn abilities of the monsters you face on the Veldt if he's gone and doesn't come back after the fight. So when you eventually encounter Behemoth on the Veldt after Gau had leaped and after the fight he doesn't come back, well, you get frustrated.

So last time I played FFVI he just waited in the airship when the others were dealing with Kefka's Tower.

To my surprise I have found, that I'm yet to post in this centuries-old (okay, couple of years) thread.

Gameplaywise Gau is one of the most potent magic-users, and since his berserk-esque skill relies on blue magic it only figures. His rages give him massive versatility even early on, before you can level up everyone else with Espers. He also gives you one less character to worry about commanding during the battle (unless you make him a caster instead of a rager).

I love Gau. I use him all the time. He's a great character about 80% of the time and is a staple in my party, what with the fact that he gets to use a lot of abilities before anyone else can. -CSM

I liked Gau, but just never really had the patience to develop his skills to the level they could be. I always felt he could be a really useful character and judging by people's comments he is a very useful character.
But like I say, I naver found the patience to use him much and the fighting with him on the veldt got kinda annoying IMO.

I love Gau, you just gotta know which rages to use. As soon as you get him, let him jump the ghost and the templar enemies, right then and there you get fire2 and bolt 2. Boom, there ya go, that'll make the mobs at Kefka's invasion melt like butter.

I've always loved Gau (not sure how it's pronounced though wink.gif)

I never paid much attention to his stats but during my first play I found the stray cat rage, and used it throughout. Even 2 weeks ago when I went back to try and beat Kefka again I was still using it and won! (WHICH INCIDENTLY WAS MY FIRST EVER COMPLETION OF THE GAME AND I WAS PRETTY EXCITED) *awaits a pat on the back*

I'm sure there are better rages than that however but hearing that 'pfffwat!' As it is used and the complimentary 'dumph!' as whatever you were fighting dies always amused me. biggrin.gif

I did not personally appreciate the character although,

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
He is not one of the 2 I leave on the airship at Kefkas tower

I know for a fact he is very powerful but I prefer to remain in control of my character in case of complete disaster. I enjoyed his company enough to not hate him. I just did not appreciate him as much as most.

thumbup.gif He's one of a kind. I like his ability to act like monsters, its very unique. I also think the story behind him is touching and sad, but good, non the less.

I love Gau but i guess that tends to happen in FF games with your least used characters after youve beat it several times. Attempting to aquire all of his rage skills for fun is one of the things ive decided to do since ive done almost everything else(that i know of)The loading time of the psx sometimes takes the fun out of this. Hes a rather unpolished character story wise in that he doesnt have a lot of dialogue or story behind although there are a couple unique events for him in the game. As for him as a character and magic user hes got respectable stamina and vigor. hes one of the more rounded character.onw thing i didnt like is in the WoB i raged him as a garm(grey dog,Vector) and hed cast Ice 3 which was unheard of at that point in the game but later on he would only cast demi with this command, kinda strange. huh.gif

I don't really understand Gau because can't you only learn his rage abilities at that one area.

Gau is the best in the WoB. After that he tapers of a bit.

Of course, after that I just have Locke dealing out 80,000 and all of my other characters slamming down ultimas, to provide any additional "cleanup".

Play straight thru, go to the fanatics tower, but do not use Gau (except when you have to). Afterwards, go to the Veldt, and leap on Pearl Dragon. You have a free end game spell that does a ton of damage, or he claws, which is only slightly less (excluding relics) than the pearl spell. Without cheesing Nightshade etc... He's still a powerhouse damage dealer with that one rage alone. Plus, and this may just be my luck, but I always fight the pearl dragon within 10 fights of going to the veldt after I fight him in the fanatics tower (No you dont have to clear it, just kill the dragon.

Oh, I realize he is the White Dragon, I'm just used to him being (that Dragon that gives me pearl smile.gif )

Make him a Retainer and hell be the closest I've found to having General Leo in your party, with the Shock ability

Gau is pretty neat, I really like his character, and I like using his Stray Cat Rage to bust through the early parts of the game. After that I'm a bit too lazy to go hunting for his other powerful rages; I prefer having a character that I control on my team.

Gau owns throughout the game. Early game it's Stray Cat, Marshal, Aspik and a few others. Late game it's Offering+Stray Cat+something funky on the weapon.

Wind-God Gau is great, and Catscratch+Sniper+Offering vs Kefka and the tiers is just pure entertainment biggrin.gif

as a kid i liked him, but having now rebeat the game (in about 2 weeks, 20 hours total) on an emulator i have to say gau is the man.

for any haters, when you first get him on sabin's quest take five minutes and get templar rage. I gave him two earrings and now gau is the strongest mage, and stays that way for pretty much the entire world of balance. terra and celes can't use tier 2 magic (fire2,ice2, bolt2) until after zozo, when suddenly EVERY one can, and then you still have to learn it? Lame. Gau does that right out of the gate with templar/ghost. Since he's so powerful i found he was always in my party, so he always had the highest level and always had some esper on him so he ends up being the guy that knows all your spells, too (for you who would want to pick his spells). Never runs out of mana when you use rages, and always throwing down hardcore magic like fire2, bolt2, blizzard, fireball, and cure2. Can't go wrong with the kid if you use him well.

i didn't use him in WOR cuz i wanted to see the special ending by beating the game with only Celes, Setzer, and Edgar. It's cool, and you get new dialogue, but it makes you want to go back and get the rest of your team.

I have a Gau question. What's this suit and tie thing I keep hearing about? I've been to weirdo Daddy's house with Gau and he asked about a repairman and Gau presumably was hurt that his dad didn't recognize him. That's all I got. Plz help me with this thing. I'm curious now.

But, seriously, his rages are a waste of time.

thats what i though for the most part as well, though i did use him early in the game when his abilities were much better than every else's.

Seriously, Stray Cat was MURDER back in the day. It's still pretty good at the end of the game. It ain't Ultima but it ain't bad (not to mention it costs squat MP)
