What do you do with the special characters when you get them? I usually keep them.

I keep them, mainly because I'd probably use them again sometime if the chance presented itself. Most of the special characters are pretty good, and I'd use them if I wanted a bit of fun and a break from my standard generic characters.
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
An exception is Malak and Boco. I keep them only for when I'm annoyed and want something to shout at.

Well, i first test them and see if they are useful or useless. I kept Mustadio onlu 'cause i thought he was kool, and later found out he'd be needed to get.... CLOUD. I was so proud i didn't send him to hell...... unlike Malak wink.gif

I usually take them, then try them out, then integrate them into my strategy. Except for Malak and Rafa, I let them join only to take their equipment and sell it, then I kick them out.

Edit
Finally a Crusader. Sounds much better than Treasure Hunter.

i keep *all* the special characters. each time i have completed fft, i have had this configuration as my final pt:

original male magic user (bought from shop to maximise faith) -- often summoner with black magic.
original female magic user (ditto) -- often priest or oracle.
original male fighter (ditto for brave) -- usually ninja.
original female fighter (ditto) -- i like them in samurai, because they don't do much physical damage, but they can still use the draw out ability well (and it is a great subset). plus, they can be made to pretty much be impervious to physical attacks.

the male magic user was invariably my favourite character and would be the highest level by as much as 20 with far and away the most mastered jobs (interestingly, females are naturally better magic users with a higher base MA stat).

ramza
agrias
meliadoul
orlandu
mustadio
rafa
malak
worker 8
reis
beowulf
cloud
byblos

throughout the game, i would have to have a few open spots to breed monsters that don't appear randomly so as to poach items otherwise unattainable.

I keep every single one of them, excluding Rad, Lavian, Alicia, and Boco--the characters I deem not-so-special by most standards. Usually keeping all the special characters forces the player to drop a generic or two off the roster, but I've made a habit of starting the game with only two other generics, so I can easily accomodate the others. Of course, some special characters waste space or gather dust (Rafa, Malak), but I do use them occassionally; they are good characters when you set them to work in other job classes.

I never have enough room to breed monsters, so when I need to poach one, I have to seek it out in the wild. That's about one of the only relevant drawbacks I can think of offhand.

I go out of my way to have a fully functionally 5-man party of death. By the end of the game(and beleive me, I have played Tactics through many times, many many times) I have Ramza, Orlandu, Agrias, Beowulf, and someone else, though it seems to vary from game to game I've played. I can never settle on a good fifth character. Meludiel, whatever her name is, can only use her abilities to break things. Cloud's Move is low. Mustadio has his ups and downs, and Reis too.

I keep them all, even Rafa and Malak, even though I never use them.

Whenever I start a game, I manufacture a team of really strong characters, buying them so they have a name I like, and having a brave or faith of 70, filling a wide variety of jobs; I have Ramza, of course, leading, then a Monk, Thief, Wizard and Priest. As the game progresses, I'll get move them on, like the Monk becoming a Samurai, the thief a Ninja, one of the wizards a summoner, and sometimes I make a Knight that uses magic.

I keep all of them with the exception of occasionally tossing the Byblos

Most of the time I will keep them to see what their abilities and skills are mastered in ( magic attack, Physical attack, Heal Magic, Support abilities), master thier first job, and change them to the job that seems appropriate. For example, I mastered Rafa in her Heaven Knight job, and on my game, she has a high physical attack power, so I changed her to the Squire Prerequisite skills (Knight, Archer, Monk, etc.). happy.gif

Uh, Rafa can't be a squire; special characters don't have the class available as their starting job.

I think what he means is that when he mastered Rafa in her Heaven Knight job, he changed her class to the ones that you need to have gotten a certain level in as a Squire to unlock.

Yeah, you're probably right. The wording just seemed kind of weird.

I keep them for the sake of keeping them. At least they won't spawn offspring like Boco always does. Damn chocobo...

Hmm... there seems to be a pattern here. Most of you guys seem to either toss Rafa and Malak, or just don't use them. What is up with that?

Their main classes are looked down upon for their sporadic attack patterns. If you have space, there's no reason not to keep 'em; if you don't, why keep dead weight? Just because they're special classes don't mean they should get a free spot in your sixteen-man army, right?

At the point in the game I'm at, I have four of my original helpers and all of the special characters I've come across. I'm trying to keep them all, even Boco but If I get even just one more I'm going to have a crisis on my hands. I'm also trying to master their original jobs (Even Rafa's and Malak's) because they are unique and it just seems right in every possible way. Oh and in regaurds to

That's because their original jobs suck. I do use them but it is always because I have a rule in RPG's. I will always develop my characters' power evenly (Okay, I broke the rule with Boco but only because he eventualy becomes next to useless.). They arn't entirely useless however. Malak did win me the battle with Zalera and Rafa's low brave did get me some good items. Other then that, I'm happy when they are up to par with everybody else wink.gif .
Edit
Silverlance's post wasn't there when I started typing. It is true enough though. 16 people leaves just enough room for a handful of generics and/or monsters.

Edit
Edit 2
I'm an idiot. For some reason or another I was thinking of job classes last night. Why? I already said, I'm an idiot. Inaccurate info fixed.

Except that your army will include 20 men and/or women in a full party, not 16.

No, there are sixteen slots for permanent party members. You may be misled by the fact that guests do not take any of these slots.

What I meant was their starting job that acts like a squire skill and at level 2 you get knight and archer. wacko.gif
