What I'd change is Cecil's Paladin look (He'd look like a Dark Knight, except his armor is shiney gold and the helmet's cover is lifted up to show his face. It would be cliche if he had helmet),
Improve the Row & Order system so it allows your characters to switch individually (I understand that whole 3 fighters front and 2 mages back bit, but if you were fighting a strong physical boss, wouldn't you want them all to be in the back row to up their defense?), Make Cid, Palom, Porom, and Yang finally die after they mysteriously "vanish" from the party's vision (Palom and Porom should stay stoned), and fix the battle system (add ATB gauge so I can see who'll be next). This way, I'd up FFIV +2.5 points up from my current rating on the game: 6/10 |

Quote (Silverlance) FF went from crystals/mages/flying-boat-airships/castles/supernatural villains to technology/evil alliances/blimps/corporative buildings/insane villains only two games from this one... Kinda makes you wonder why Square decided to change things so abruptly. Other people probably got tired of that same theme after 5 installments and probably let Square know straight away. I know I would have. This may have already been mentioned, but I would have loved for the characters to have distinct personalities to match the distinct stories behind them. Whenever they "talked," I felt like I was listening (so to speak) to an audio recording or something; like they were robots rather than real people. Even the generic townsfolk could have used a little more color. I get little tired of reading "Oh, this is such a peaceful town." "This town doesn't get many visitors." and their many variations over and over again. -------------------- |

Honestly, FFIV is damn near perfect in my opinion. If there's one thing I could change, however, it would be extremely minor and most likely the correction to a petty and stupid pet peeve...and I know just the one!
The way in which spells are cast via the menu outside of battles. For example, whenever I choose for Rosa to heal someone with one of her Cure spells through the game menu, I sometimes 'miss' whom I want to have cured. Given that you're immediately returned to the spell menu following the selection and use of a spell on a single character, you must reselect it and then go back to the status screen if you wish to use it again on someone else. In theory it doesn't sound bad, but in my experience I usually go through this whole process rather quickly, and 'cause of that I often select the wrong character, i.e., whoever's the first in the roster by an accidental premature press of the button. Clearly, this leads to a waste of MP, if the spell is effective. I find it much more organized and less frustrating to be able to cast spells outta battle on any or all characters without having to cycle through menus just to use the same spell a second/third/etc. time. That isn't to say this flaw is only present in FFIV, of course, but it's the only thing I can think of that I'd want to change if I could. How's that for digging at the very darkest depths of the bottom of the barrel? -------------------- Words of Wisdom: If something can go wrong, it will. If anything simply cannot go wrong, it will anyway. If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong. - Murphy’s Law Boing! You wouldn't actually have to change that much to make becoming a paladin optional, and it could even add to the symbolism, especially if you could go to Mt. Ordeals to become a paladin at any time after when you would normally. The only time I can really think of when it was truely, actually, 100% necessary for cecil to be a paladin was the fight with zeromus. Aside from that, save for a few dialogue changes and making Tellah learn meteo from somewhere else (learning the ultimate black magic from the same light that makes cecil a paladin is kinda stupid anyways), everything but going to Mt. Ordeals when you did could be left the same.
Actually, even if you didn't make Mt. Ordeals optional, making the player choose when to go there would be a good idea. After all, as you continued on as a dark knight, cecil would get less and less useful as more dark enemies show up, so that eventually the player decides that its futile to continue as a dark knight, and finally decides to become a paladin. This way, you can actually SEE that Cecil can't succeed until seeking redemption, instead of merely being told it. At least I think it's a good idea. -------------------- Mercy?! The only things I would change are:
• Making Cid look muuuuch cooler. • Adding more minigames. • Actually making the field sprites look like the battle sprites and the portrait. I wouldnt matter which one the build off of to me. -------------------- eh? |

I would probably change the script to make it seem less... scripted. Then it would be a pretty damn good game (well, more damn good than it already is).

Well, I would have liked if each of the characters had more 'depth' to them. While I was playing the game, everything seemed to happen so quickly when they talked. I suppose it's just because I'm used to playing newer games, but as is it's fine. The other thing that bothered me a lot was Cid's character design. He just looked really odd.
