I just got this game in an online gift exchange on another website I go to daily... and I started playing it and I can't figure out how to learn spells.
My Wizards/Priests start out without any spells. Do I need to attain JP to get the basic spells, or is there something else I'm missing? It's really hard for a priest to attain JP without putting him/herself in serious risk... (trying to attack) -------------------- Targeted individual Jesse Radin |

Yep, performing actions to accumulate JP to learn new spells and abilities is the only way to go. Fortunately, you get JP for just about everything, from performing physical attacks to casting Bolt 1 to simply giving somebody an X-Potion.
However, as you unlock the different job classes, you should have a small amount of JP to work with for that class that allows you to learn at least a couple of the smaller "cheaper" things. Oh, and as characters gain JP in their job class in a battle, the party members that fought with them gain a very small amount of JP for that same class, even if they haven't unlocked it yet. |

It's really hard for a priest to attain JP without putting him/herself in serious risk... (trying to attack) Wizards and Priests aren't meant to be attackers, so try to avoid physical encounters. For instance, inMandalia Plains (enter from Igros), I would move my 3~4 people to the little rock formation in the corner where all the sides can be guarded with three people. That way you can have your wizard stand on the hill and use spells until his MP runs out, then start using potions with Item to get more JP. -------------------- It's gonna be a glorious day I feel my luck can change |

I HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM! Ok, it took me forever to realise this, but in your menu, go to Formation, then hit "Start" From there, you can equip armor, Purchase abilities, change jobs, ect. I didnt realize to hit start for forever...

So I can just go and change a chemist to a wizard/priest and buy spells in the menu where I equip items?

Your character can become any job that you want him/her to be (except for the special job classes that are unique to some characters). The prerequisites for each job are described in here, but generally they consist in one or more Jobs to reach a certain level (which can only be achieved by earning Job Points in this Job). Your job class will determine your primary skillset: a wizard will have Black Magic as a primary skillset, whereas a Monk will have Punch Art as his primary skillset. Your job also determines your HP, MP, Jump, Move, Speed, Evade, Physical and Magical Attack, and also what type of aquipment you can equip.
A character has access to any skillset of any Job he/she has currently unlocked as a secondary skillset. This means that you can choose any skillset with any job available (you can have a White Mage do Break Skills if you want, or a Lancer cast some Summons...). However, your unit can only use abilities he/she has learned, meanng that if you equip a unit with a White Magic skillset, but you didn't took the time to go into his abilities menu to have him/her learn any single magic, it will be useless. Generally, when a unit has access to a new Job, they have a small amount of JP, enough to learn the smallest abilities available: a lvl 1 White Mage can start with Cure and either Protect and/or Shell, while a Black Mage can often start out with all three of the level 1 elemental spells. To end the matter, yes, you can just go and change a Chemist into a Wizard/Priest (provided that he has earned enough JP to be a lvl 2 Chemist), and yes, you can "buy" spells for each characters in the abilities menu of each one, with JP earned for the specific Job you're interested int to. You can earn JP in battle (for each successful action. Warning: a spell or item or ability healing HP of a fully cured unit isn't a succesful action...) or in Propositions for generic units. |

When I try to learn spells they're all grayed out... even though I think I have enough JP points that I should be able to learn some. What gives?

Hmm, it's been a while since I had this game, so this might only be conjecture. Could it be because you haven't leveled up far enough in that job class to get those abilities?
Or hang on, aren't they greyed out until you buy/learn them? The they become solid? Or is it the other way around? Man I wish I had it again... |

You're prolly in the wrong menu. You're prolly just viewing the abilities in the characters stats.
Here's a step-by-step: From Formation fress the Triange button over the character. Now go to Ability (Select with O obviously) and go down to Learn. Now in this menu you can see the amount of JP each of your jobs has got on the far right. Now select a job. You can now see how much the new skill will cost on the far right with the amount you have in the top right hand corner. If you have enough JP to learn it it'll be black, if you don't it'll be in gray. You can press right or left to see support, reaction etc abilities they can learn as well. Uh, also when you've learned what you want be sure to Set them now! You can have one other command ability other than the jobs main one, one reaction ability, one support ability and one movement ability from all the ones you've learned accross all your jobs. Confused? I was at first. -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

Exactly. The learning processes for FFT are a bit difficult to comprehend early on, but if you keep at it, you'll have them down before you know it. When you couple the semi-frustrating menus and the uneventful first chapter (for the most part), it can be off-putting, but if you can overcome those trials, you'll be an FFT addict like the rest of us.
You want that right? -------------------- It's gonna be a glorious day I feel my luck can change |

I did the same thing the first time I played this game. I didn't know that you could change jobs and learn abilities because I didn't get the little booklet with the game (got it from my cousin). I was in chapter 3 before I realised how to do that, so I restarted the game. At least I was a Master Squire and all my chemists were masters, too.
