So, I finally decided to get some Mimes. Wasn't too hard, two of my characters were only two job levels from the class, go figure.
Anyway, so I've had plenty of fun using mimes, however, I noticed something. Whenever I use a guest characters special attacks, the Mimes won't do anything. Mimes will use the attack of any normal job class immediately after its execution (it won't charge spells, or jumps, but will let fly the attack once its finally been unleashed), however, they won't use special classes' attacks and (quite naturally, I think), they won't mimic each other. Furhtermore, they won't mimic unless the previous action was successful. So... that's supposed to happen right? I assume so, since repeated testings have yielded the same results. I just never noticed anyone mentioning this before in a FAQ or guide or what not. Also, failing to mimic seems to result from being unable to find a suitable target, or if a ranged (bow/gun) attack might be blocked. But at other times, they still mimic the action even if it wastes a shot. Hmmm... Just an observation I thought I'd mention. If anyone has other thoughts or observations on the ways of Mimes, feel free to plunk them down. -------------------- And behold, I saw a Pale Gaming System, and the name of he who rode it was Squaresoft, and Enix followed him. |

You're right about most things.
Mimes can only mimic generic jobs, and only if they can find a target. A failed attempt means that they were unable to find a target (for example, a Steal attempt with no one standing in front of them). However, when it comes to ranged attacks, they will perform the action if the same spot is available to them: let's say you just used Throw Stone with your Squire against a unit three panels in front of said Squire, the Mime(s) will do the same if there is a panel three squares before them (you'll see the stone thrown), but will state "Mimic Failed!" if three panels before them is the edge of the map. Got it? The fact that a ranged attack may be blocked doesn't factor in though: the only time it is accounted for is if the AI has 0% chances of damaging you due to blocking (this is the only time a unit will not attack you if they can, other than using status effects like Transparent or Critical). Little trick with Mimes: an easy level up/build up technique involves using Accumulate with every unit you have. Since the Mime has an innate Martial Arts, this will turn him/her into a powerhouse with his/her fists really fast. By the time he finally gets to the enemies, they will regret it |

Fascinating. Thanks for he info.
Added p+int: anyone whose played a mime would a(ready know this, but guess what? Female Mimes got a fox tail! And I thought having a beak on the back of your head was funky (male mimes)! I never would have guessed the tail was there, though, from the front view of the sprite or the artwork. Its just cool. A pity the mimes can't mimic Scream, then. Just think if you had Ramza and four mimes all Screaming in succession, and then stampeding over the enemies like a technicolored wave of death. -------------------- And behold, I saw a Pale Gaming System, and the name of he who rode it was Squaresoft, and Enix followed him. |
