I bought Ghost in the Shell the other day. My first anime ever. And I must say it's a masterpiece. It's a brilliant movie.

Ghost in the Shell is an excellent beginner to anime. May I also suggest the Ninja Scroll series? And if you want to go oldschool, Vampire Hunter D kicks all kinds of ass.

I remember one of my friends who brought it into class for a presentation. Needless to say, the presentation got an A+ for visuals! Great movie, although I remember almost nothing about it.

I bought and read the Ghost in the Shell manga. I got to admit, I wasn't too impressed. Yes, the lead character was cute, yes, it had some funny parts, and yes the technology and action was neat... however, the story was extremely disjointed, way too heavy on explaining itself, and no where near as philosophical as reviews say it is. The whole question of "What does it mean to be human?" is always brought up as a theme by reviewrs, but never actually addressed or explored in the story itself, save for a four page monologue at the end of the book.
Admittedly, I have not seen the anime, but I hear its not much different from the manga. I have seen on the episodes of the new show, Stand Alone Complex, and while that didn't seem as disjointed as the manga, it nonetheless didn't interest me. I may still see the anime movie sometime, when I get around to it, but I'm afraid the manga has left me jaded. My first anime, too.
![]() Personally, I think it might be overrated and a bit bland and boring, but it's still not too terrible like some people might say. Just takes some getting in to. ![]() -------------------- ~Status Report~ * Completed... Dragon's Head * Completed... Soldiers of the Empire: Disciples (release pending) * In Progress/Undecided... I'm not a fan of Ghost in the Shell, as I found it a bit too pretentious in its philosophical leanings. GotS did however have excellent art and animation in its various incarnations, especially when compared to the time period each came out, and for that I can commend it. When it comes to story and characters, however, it gets a thumbs-down from me.
Honestly, I don't think I could recommend GotS as an introduction to anime. A newcomer would probably be better off with something a lot less preachy. -------------------- "I always have a quotation for everything - it saves original thinking." ~Dorothy L.
