"Son of a sandworm!"

So did anyone pick up their copy of Final Fantasy VI Advance yet? I have to pick it up tomorrow, since my local Gamestop doesn't have it in yet. Still, some places will have had it by now, so I made this thread for everyone to share their reactions to it.

First of all Zeromus_X, did your post mean they retranslated "Son of a Submariner"?

My reaction is, Where's the sweet new strategy guide? I don't plan on buying the game but I thought it would be fun to flip through the strategy guide since I beat my SNES copy of FF6 not too long ago. I get to Walmart however, and they've got like 4 copies of the game in, and no strategy guide! I was disappointed.

Yes, that's what I was hinting at. tongue.gif I got that information from someone at another forum. I think it's pretty catchy myself. And alot of people were making a fuss over the line being retranslated (not necessarily here, but in a few other forums). >_>

Hm, that's strange. Maybe it hasn't been printed yet? Well, it would seem fitting that they'd publish a guide with the game. I remember FFIVA, FFVA, and FFIIIDS all had strategy guides that were released with them. Perhaps your Wal Mart doesn't have them in yet?

At least it's a retarded line that fits the context of the scene now rather than just being a retarded line.

I had thoroughly enjoyed paging through those guides, so I was kind of expecting one for FFVI.

About the "Son of a ______" that this whole thread is about, someone around here must've bought the game and played that far into it by now to confirm your rumor for us. (It's only about and hour and a half in if I remember correctly.)

I like "Son of a Submariner" better.

they're all horny after they get off the sub (and rejoice in strip clubs, bars, and promote the oldest profession), so I always believed he was using an elaborate way to call him a bastard.

son of a sandworm, can that imply anything?, no.

The old one made sense in the scene as well, since the darn thing IS able to go underwater.

And it's not a retarded line. Kefka is a genius--just a deranged, psychotic, sadistic one.

I'm sort of disappointed that they changed the name, but it's not like it's going to ruin my Christmas or anything. I bought the game around a half-hour ago, so I probably won't be back for a week or so.

I think the old line was better, but that doesn't mean that I dislike "Son of a Sandworm!". They could have changed it to something much worse.

Though, I would agree that they should have left it alone

As I said in chat (as usual, hint hint non chatters), I rather like it. I liked the original line, but this one just evokes the Sandworms in Beetlejuice, which makes me smile.

Sandworms. You hate em', right? I hate em' myself!

Ahem.

I have never really thought about it, but I think Cloud_Strife510's reasoning is pretty sound. Who knows if that was what was intended or not, but I like it nonetheless.

At any rate, I could care less about the word being changed.

It also makes another reference to FFV, where Sandworm was a rather innovative boss.

(FFV had quite a lot of rather innovative bosses. Sandworm, Atomos, Stalker...)

The other reference, of course, pertains to the hidden character who shall not be named due to the prevalence of false rumours relating him to a certain American politician.

Didn't they also mention sandworms when you're tailing Gerad at the beginning of the WoR? I thought that sandworms attacked the castle, and that allowed all the criminals to escape. That would explain why Kefka would reference them while he's in the Figaro Desert.

I wasn't mad about that line, but 30 minutes in I'm not happy with the new translation at all. I'm not the kind of person who normally gets mad about things like that, but it's very noticeable, and not in a good way. It just sound a lot more cheesy and unnatural. I just got done with the moogle vs. Narshe guards battle, and they changed all the moogles names. "Mogsy?" "Mugmug?" "Moguel?" What was wrong with the kupo sounds? That's what they would call each other, right? I hope this doesn't keep up.

Edit
It's keeping up.
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
They changed the line from when you first see Shadow from "He'd slit his mama's throat for a nickle," to "He'd kill his best friend if the price was right." I guess that kind of has some ironic foreshadowing, but it loses the flavor, IMO

They screwed the translation? Friggen crap, now I don't even feel like buying it. I'll just get the rom.

I agree with most people that it was unecessary to remove "Son of a submariner!" quote. Still have yet to try it out.

Got mine today.

I just saw the opening and narshe, and so far, it's not as good as the SNES version. Translation seems new, though with heavy influence from Ted Woosleys, which is good and bad, as some things are explained better, and other things are cheezy(er).

My main complaint is the GBA though. Obviously they had to make some sound and visual adjustments, which is ultamitely worse quality in both. The most glaring of which is, the dagger, bite, and punch battle sounds have been merged into one all encompasing sound. It's pretty ear grating. Also everything seems pixilated.

Edit
Gears, I agree with you about the moogle names. Most are pretty crappy.
Though I did like the one named "cosmog".

Just opened up the box right now. Commencing to pop it into my Nintendo DS.

I'll give my impressions on the new translation in a bit.

Edit: The music seems much better than I thought. I'm glad for that.

I'm loving the new translation, of course. They've kept all the SNES names intact (Terra, Locke, Sabin, et all), as well as kept bits and pieces of the Woolsey script kept in.

My favorite minor adjustment so far is this one:

"Our king showers his attention on women. Young, old, pretty, or plain...No one is safe!"

xD.

And of course, properly dubbed spells and item names make me a happy person. Pretty good so far, but I'm not too far in.

I liked the Moogle names. Especially Molulu. And I love Molulu's Charm heart.gif. Favorite change that they did, for me.

hah, I'm the exact opposite with the spell names. I've always hated "curega" and whatnot, it just sounds stupid to me.

Both FFV and this I'm just blocking out the names in my head and replacing with the old. Hard to keep them from sinking in, though.

Hoo boy. I'm starting to rejoice in the fact that I ignored all the "FF3 us translation stinks" junk I heard and bought the SNES cart last May.

As far as other stuff besides the translation goes, I don't know how Nintendo does it, but screenshots of GBA and DS games always look really bad, and now it sounds like the FF6A doesn't look very nice itself. The section in the latest Nintendo Power pretty much gave the whole game away and made it look quite ugly.

It's really too bad. (BDZ sheds a tear over the possible corruption of his all-time favorite game. sad.gif )

I don't think it looks that bad at all; in fact, the only thing that's annoyed me so far is that Sabin doesn't call Edgar "Big brother" anymore... it feels incredibly weird. :\

Well, that and the SwdTech sound got replaced by the black magic one. Not really annoying, but it does throw me off. Visually, I've yet to be displeased.

So far what I'm reading about the translation in this thread is making me NOT PLEASED with FF6a.

Same here. The -ara and -aga suffixes don't even represent the spells in logical alphabetical order, nor do their new names suggest the power of the spell (the way "Cure 2" and "Cure 3" do). And such names aren't a "translation" of the Japanese--they seem like a half-ass attempt to include Japanese-sounding suffixes in an otherwise English-language game, without much reason for doing so. I strongly suggest going back to numbers, since "light/minor/major" is already used by D&D and "alpha/beta/gamma" is already used by Earthbound.

Additionally, it seems that they got rid of the cute "kupo"-derived moogle names. That's sad.

But them re-translating stuff...tsk tsk tsk, why didn't you stupid "Ted Woolsey Sucks Because He Didn't Write Son Of A B****" fankids listen when I told you that Woolsey's translation was actually really good? Now Squenix felt the need to do this!

I'm kind of annoyed that the spells are the Fire Fira Firaga crap, but whatever.
I don't really care much for the music either, but hey. What do I know.

I got mine yesterday even if I shouldn't have.
They even gave me the promo standee for the game with Miss Terra on it.

I don't know why people are annoyed over 'Fire/a/aga' etc . Fire 1/2/3 sounds so generic you would think the spell titles were coined by Andy Warhol.

it's stupid the suffixes. I don't care that much, but in terms of a visual of the words

Fire3- Firaga

Ice3-Blizzaga
adding numerals made it more symmetric and in my mind more aesthetically pleasing than blizzara/thundara.

But on a scale of one to ten on how much it bothers me-

I haven't bought it yet, but I'm taking the fact that nobody's mentioned it yet to mean that they're not doing that horrible talking head thing? Y'know, Cyan's dialogue box comes up, and a picture of his face appears immediately to the left of the text? Please tell me they scrapped that idea.

Nope. It's done just like the previous Advance adaptations. Most characters seem to just use shrunken versions of their menu portraits.

The portraits are no where near as bad as FF5's, so you dont have TOO much to worry about.

They still look as crappy as they did in the SNES version, though. New ones are no exception.
