My dad told me Nirvana was a pretty cool group to listen to.

Did you know that they have an album out that has about 3-4 cd's with a total of like 60-70 tracks! its awesome thumbup.gif

Allow me to be the blasphemous one in this thread...

Nirvana? Eh, they're alright. I can't even say that they're in my top 20 favorite bands (probably top 25 though)

I admire Kurt Cobain and Nirvana for pioneering the grunge generation, but I just appreciate grunge's other kings for their actual music more than them... Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, ... Musicallly, I think they're more talented than Cobain and the boys.
Granted, yes, they did release some kickass songs; "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Heart-Shaped Box", "Sliver", "All Apologies", and the Unplugged in New York album is good. But there's just not enough substance in their writing to make me enjoy all of it.
And the fact that Cobain's death has been just an excuse to cash in on unnecessary cds and re-releases, books, and other propoganda is ridiculous. Yes, he was a great guitarist, but that was over 10 years ago now. Kurt is not "resting in peace" because of it, believe you me.

I was thinking about adding this to my list of cds to get, but if I do decide to get it, it's going towards the bottom of the list, I think. I'm also never too keen on box sets that include more than 2 cds, call me silly if you will.

Being a visionary and making better music is a talent in itself. It's just less conventional.

This albums a little different than all that. That's why I'm encouraging people to listen.

I really like Nirvana, but I'm with Sabin. I think Soundgarden, STP, and AiC are much better. I hardly ever listen to all the Mtv/vh1 hype about them and their albums, for most of that IS just over-commercialization for Cobain's death. But nonetheless, they are still a kickass group and true pioneers

How many MORE Nirvana items will be sold? How many more greatest hits, box sets, t-shirts and posters must they sell before everyone realizes that it's all just merchandising.

Personally, I've always hated Nirvana, I have absolutely NO respect for Kurt Cobain anymore. I look at them as one of the biggest over-rated bands of the 90's. What exactly did they influence? They didn't invent grunge, they didn't create something different. If anything, Nirvana's mainstream power was a negative influence on modern music. How you might ask? Cobain's views on being "The Rock Star who did not want to be a star" gave rebellion a kickstart in popularity. Nirvana's overly simplistic musical style set the trend of "more is less" and the overall talent found in musicians decreased. Sure, it may not have been their fault, but I blame them for it. They really weren't anything special, I don't think it's right to keep putting out "new" Nirvana stuff. It's become just another way for the Industry to make some cash. David was so much more talented than Kurt anyways, Kurt wouldn't have been immortalized had he remained living, Nirvana would've done exactly what Cobain feared most, they would "fade away".

If you like 'em, no disrespect to you, that's just my opinion. I'd much rather see a Rage Against The Machine box set or something.

Whoa. I thought I was gonna be alone on this one, but Sabin and DF sure surprised me. o.O

I had a pretty... "abrasive" post written up, but didn't post it/deleted it because I didn't wanna go in that direction. Let's just say that I agree with a lot of what DF and Sabs said, and have a few more points of my own that I'll just keep between myself and my brother (we talked about this same thing just yesterday). I never really liked Nirvana, and I doubt I ever will, although I have some amount of respect for them and what they did as a band, but not as artists or their "legacy" nor Cobain himself. I actually respect Foo Fighters a lot more than I respect Nirvana, though I don't like their music, either.

I'm sorry that the topic I made to share info about an album I really liked became an anti-nirvana thread.

Yeah, that did seem rhetorical to me. =/

I do like Nirvana, but like Sabin, I enjoy the other Seattle bands that came out of that time (Pearl Jam, especially). From what I've heard and listened to, the three albums are "ok", but the recording of the songs isn't that good and the dvd is nothing special either.

Then again, I'm not a Cobain fanboy and I'm definately not that dedicated to the band, so I probably wouldn't want to spend any money on it, as packed as it seems.

Now, if Pearl Jam did a three-disc compilation of that show in Boston where they played all of their performing songs, then that would be money well spent.

Oh come on guys, every star that ever croaked has had crap sold in their name decades after they died. Tupac, Biggie, John Lennon, Jim Morrison. All of those guys have had TONS of commercial crap made in thier name. In some sick way it keeps thier memories alive on this planet. We probly would've forgotten these musical pioneers much faster if they had not been mentioned throgh use of commercialism. I'm not saying it's right, because after all, music has made some of the best musicians turn to poopy *cough*FredDurst*cough* I'm just saying that we cannot be angry at a men who is a mere memory with a spirit attached to use, for the actions of souless corperate wankers.

I love Nirvana, fuck the nay-sayers.

I heartily concur with Dragon_Fire.

One point I would like to make, however, is concerning Kurt Cobains' diaries. I recieved it a Christmas or two back, and it's probably the worst £20 anyone has ever spent on me. Kurt Cobain, in my opinion, is a self-indulgent, depressive *expletive*. While I respect to some minimal extent what they did and figured I may as well look into the life of 'the new Elvis' and 'the voice of a generation,' I opened the book to find a picture of a monster, stories of how his stomach hurt and little adverts for 'Pine Fresh' Cleaning Co. The only good thing was that picture of the Iron Maiden mascot Eddie.

Kurt Cobain is definitely the worst part of a sub-par band for me. He was very anti-mainstream, but aspired to become a mainstream musician, and, when he was successful, he killed himself. And quoted Neil Young in his suicide note. Depressive moron.

(Sorry. I just really dislike Kurt Cobain. Well, the Kurt Cobain I've read about anyway.)

I like Smells Like Teen Spirit, but that's about it. The groups' lives themselves (unless they have a lot of songs I like) generally don't hold much care from me. in other words, I look at the music rather than the group/person. So in this case, hey, I like Nirvana.

May be a bit of a one-sided view, but that's just how I am.

If I were to rate the discs, it'd be like this:

Disc One ~ 4/10
Disc Two ~ 6/10
Disc Three ~ 8/10
Disc 4 DVD ~ 6/10

I enjoyed disc two and disc three a bit, but overall I think it was thirty bucks that could have gone towards something better. The sister who gave it to me told me she'd exchange it if I didn't like it, but I didn't have the heart to.

I'd say the compilation set is more for those hardcore Nirvana-ists, and while I enjoy Unplugged and a few other songs, it didn't go too well over with me.
