how would you guys suggest i go about getting a magic using ninja?

that is, having enough MA to do decent damage with magic, while still retaining good speed and PA.

i'm willing to do the level down-level up thing, but what classes should i use for the best results?

The Ninja is one of the weakest class in terms of MA (only the Calculator, Thief and lancer are worse), so it would definitely require some level-up/down trick.

About gaining MA

Unfortunately, the only way for a generic unit to raise his/her MA using the level-up/down trick is by leveling up as a Mime. In fact, if you use the trick a lot, but never spend some time leveling up as a Mime, you will lose MA at some point ;_; (the only special classes with an advantage in MA growth besides Mime are Ramza's Squire, Holy Swordsman, Dragoner, Temple Knight and Soldier).

So, you have two options: either level up as a Mime if you plan on leveling up a generic unit (and level down as a Bard for Male units, a Chemist for Female units), or use one of the 5 special characters with a special Job Class, and level them up in their respective class (once again, level down as a Bard for Male units, and as a Chemist if you're using Reis).

One final note about raising up MA: leveling up as a Mime will eventually make your unit lose some MP, since the Mime as the worst growth in MP of all Jobs. So if you want to keep your MP at their original levels, you'll have to spend some time leveling up in a mage type Job (the best for quick MP growth is the Summoner, but overall, the Priest is better, since it has a great Hp growth, and a very decent PA growth). However, and this is good for you, leveling up as a Mime will raise your PA a LOT!!

About gaining PA and Speed

To gain PA and Speed, just level up as a Ninja, and level down as either a Bard or a Chemist.

I jope this is helpful. Post again if you need precisions or other intel.

Since they gain in both magic and phsyical power, I'd reccomend Samuris or if you can't get their class yet Monks. Then use the Ninjas or Theifs for speed. If the magic power looks to be a little low switch over to Black Mage for a while. Its good to keep in mind that females are usualy better in the magic department and Males are usualy better with physical power. Its also good to keep in mind that Mimes are great for all purpose training, save for one or two shortcomings and their difficulty of use. As for the level down/level up thing, only use it if you can find a degenorator trap and know what Jobs have bad stat gains in Physical Power, Magical Power and Speed. You'll end up wasting tons of time if you don't.
